Is it possible to appear for KTET exam after B.Ed. with B.Tech.

Unsure whether or not you are eligible to appear for the KTET exam after your B.Tech. and B.Ed.? Know through expert advice whether you are eligible to appear for the exam.

I am pursuing B.Ed. from Calicut University with my B. Tech. graduation. As per the eligibility criteria mentioned in KTET it says that B.A. or B.Sc. is required. Since I am not having a B.A. or a B.Sc. Degree is it possible to appear for the K TET exam after B.Ed. with B.Tech graduation?

  • In some states like Karnataka and Telangana, I think they are allowing engineering graduates with B.E. qualifications to appear for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) after the rules were revised some years ago. In Tamil Nadu, too, B.E. and B.Tech. graduates, with the additional qualification of B.Ed., could appear for the State's TET, and then teach Maths as Assistant Teachers in the high school classes.

However, for the Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (KTET) I am not sure if the eligibility rules have been relaxed as yet for B.E. and B.Tech. graduates. As of now, B.A. or B.Sc. or B.Com. with min. of 45% marks is still the qualification criteria, in addition to B.Ed./D.Ed./D.El.Ed. for upper primary or high school as applicable. Likely the reason for not permitting engineering graduates to appear for TET is that they give preference to Graduates of humanities or pure sciences.

The best thing would be to get your query clarified by the KTET officials themselves. Here's the address and email for details to communicate with them-
Address: Office of the Commissioner of Government Examinations, Pareeksha Bhavan, Poojapura, Thiruvananthapuram-695012, Kerala.
    Email: ktet.helpdesk@gmail.com
    Website: https://ktet.kerala.gov.in/
Note- The contact no. given at their website is only for contacting the IT Cell in case you have a technical problem in the online application procedure, so do not call that number for your query.

If you are decisive about taking up a teaching career in a school, I suggest that you check out the eligibility criteria for teachers as per the regulations of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Their website- https://ncte.gov.in/Website/MinimumQualifications.aspx

  • K TET is being conducted in two levels. The first level is to teach primary classes. The qualification requirement for these posts is a pass in 10 + 2 or equivalent with a minimum of 45% marks and an education degree in elementary education or diploma in education. The second level is for teaching in a higher class. There the requirement is a pass in BA/B Sc / B.Com with a degree in education. In the notification nowhere it was mentioned that Engineering graduates can also apply,
But as per the norms amended by National Council for Teacher Education, an Engineering graduate is also eligible for attending the TET test. Many states already implemented this amendment and allowed Engineering graduates also to write the examination after B.Ed.
If we check the eligibility criteria for doing B.Ed in Kerala state government university, Engineering degree holders are not given the eligibility. So I am of the opinion that B.Tech/BE graduates with B.Ed from other state universities may not be allowed for TET.
However, you can get the clarification by contacting the concerned. https://ktet.kerala.gov.in/ is the official website. You can contact the concerned through this website.

  • KTET is being held in two modes one such mode is the absorption of teachers to be utilised for teaching the students of the primary classes. They need to have a 10+2 qualification with the minimum aggregate of 45 percent marks followed by a diploma in education. The next mode is the recruitment of teachers having a graduation degree in any stream such as B.A/ B.Sc/ B.Com etc with a qualification of degree in education such as B.Ed.
National Council of Higher Education has modified the eligibility criteria of the teachers with the inclusion of B.E/ B.Tech aspirants followed by a degree in B.Ed for the TET tests being conducted in the different states.
While we check the eligibility criteria of Kerala State Government, the aspirants having B.E/ B.Tech qualification are not allowed to write their B.Ed examination making them in eligible for the teachers for the government school. If some aspirants have acquired a B.Ed degree after their graduation from other states, they are not allowed to write TET test.
You may make an enquiry into the latest update of Kerala Government by going through their websites.

  • Some south indian states allow B.tech qualification to appear for teacher eligibility test. Kerala is one of them. Some years ago, they implemented new rules where they allowed to this degree with B.Ed qualification for KTET. But, on checking KTET website you will find they are allowing for TET to those candidate who having B.tech degree from Kerala state. They don't allow to other state candidate.
