  • Age criterion change for admission to class 1 in 2022-23

My daughter's date of birth is Jan 10 2017.
    She is now in UKG.
Is she eligible for admission to class 1this year?
Will there be any delay if enrolled now in class 1 to attend class 10 board exams if age limit not attained?
How will the scenario be for CBSE?
Really confused since there is no uniformity regarding minimum age criteria for class 1 this year

  • Generally, the age limit for admission to class 1 is taken as 5 years to be completed by the 31st March in the year which the child has to take admission in class 1. For example a child should attain an age of 5 years by 31st March, 2022 if he is seeking admission in the academic year 2022-23.
In your case the child has DOB as 10.01.2017. So she will be having age as 5 years and 3 months by 31st March, 2022 so she has already attained the eligible age. So she is eligible for admission in class 1.
There was a news in the media that Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has increased this age eligibility from 5 years to 6 years and that has created a big confusion in the minds of the parents. Now many states Govt in our country have rectified it and telling that age eligibility remains at 5 years only.

  • Thanks for replying.

  • The minimum age for getting admitted to first-class in any CBSE school is 5 years and the maximum age is 7 years. Your daughter's date of birth is Jan 10th, 2017. That means she completed her 5th year by 10th Jan 2022. So she is correct to get admitted to 1st standard in the year 2022=23.

  • Thanks for replying sir. Will there be any issue when giving board exam in 10th std, CBSE board? Will she lose out a year sir?

  • As per CBSE age criteria, children's age should be minimum of 5 years for getting admission into class 1. As mentioned above, your daughter's DOB is 10 January 2017. Your daughter will be attaining 5 years 2 months age by 31st March. As you CBSE academic session end in March and starts from April. So, age is calculated till March for tAking admission into CBSE board school. So, there would not be problem in getting admission into standard 1st regarding age.

  • According to National Education Policy 2020, The structure of the education system is 5+3+3+4 where 5 years of foundational learning (3 years (Prep, PreNursery and Nursery in Anganwadi/ Preschool and other 2 years of classes 1 and 2).
Presently Your child's age is 5 years means should be in Preschool for formal education. It may be Nursery or Pre Nursery
