  • Monkeypox is a disease which spreads through a virus which transmits to humans from animals. It is called Monkeypox because it was discovered for the first time in the year 1958 in a monkey. Its symptoms are very similar to those seen in the smallpox patients but it is not as severe as smallpox. Its source is from Africa and there are two variations pertaining to West Africa and Congo Basin. The West African version appears to be less severe than its Congo counterpart. The fatality rates vary from 3 to 10%. The first ever case in humans was found in a child in the year 1970 in the Republic of the Congo, Africa.
Common symptoms of this disease are acute onset of fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, muscle and body aches, back pain, profound weakness etc.
This infection is contagious in nature and spreads from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and other contaminated materials used by the patients like bed sheet or napkin or towel.
Some anti viral medicines like tecovirimat are developed by the drug companies to combat Monkeypox but it is not widely available. Traditionally this disease was tried to be cured with the smallpox medicines albeit with limited success. In many cases the disease itself gets controlled by the body immune system. The incubation period of this virus to manifest its effect is generally a few days but in some cases it can stretch much in the range 5 to 21 days.
So far the small pox vaccine is being used for it though some new vaccines are also under development and testing.
Maintaining huygienic conditions and avoiding contacts are the two main strategies which work for protection from this virus. Cleaning the hands with soap thoroughly after each suspected touch with the infected person or material is a must to kill the virus and not allow it to enter our bodies. Sanitiser is to be used on the go especially while coming in contact with public facilities in hospitals, parks, and other such places.
