  • How to mould my career at the age of 31?

Are you planning to change your career options after crossing 30 years of age? Are you in doubt about the options available and how to go about it? Follow this thread to know the opinion of our experienced members in this regard.

I completed my MBA in 2015 and started preparing for UPSC exams. I exhausted six chances and now I am 31 years of age. I have no job experience. What do you suggest now? Should I continue with my attempts to clear the UPSC exams or should I start looking for a new career or is there any other possibilities?

  • As per your detail, you should have at least 5 years of work experience in relevant subject field by this time. No idea why you have missed to apply for a job when you had completed MBA in 2015 or soon after. MBA is one of the most valued Master Degree across the globe which many organizations looking for such candidate.

UPSC could have done side by side when working as well. Still suggesting for you to try for a job again and try to appear for the UPSC when time comes.

The employer may ask you about the gap on the past career history (even it is not on your CV). You can convince them with a valuable reason and join in any reputed organization to obtain few months or years of work experience. You can apply online or through reputed consultant so that they can help you to get the job.

  • It is good that you have tried so many attempts for UPSC which is the prestigious competitive exam in our country. Just go through your scores in those attempts and find out what was your position and was it near the cut off or was below it. Did you miss your selection narrowly? Another thing is was your score consistently going up or not? If so then you can again try for it. If not then forget about it and concentrate for getting a job in the industry.
As there has been a significant gap between your MBA and today it is natural that employers will ask for this gap period. There is nothing to worry about it because you can always explain it in terms of the exam that you were attempting for.
So, go through the various job portals and apply for the relevant jobs related to your qualification. You might have to acquire some additional qualifications like some short course in some specialised management or administrative line so that you may become eligible for some specific positions where certain additional qualifications are required.
Apart from that please do not think that your career is blocked because you did not qualify in UPSC. It is never like that. Life is a long journey and there are other opportunities there which would be available to you.
What about trying for teaching line where there are some opportunities in private colleges, schools etc. With your tremendous experience of UPSC preparations you can even think of joining some IAS academy where remunerations are quite high. Use your experience to fullest and help the students to realise their goals.
Have you ever considered business as a viable option for making career? Today due to the deterioration in employment conditions in our country many people are opting for that line through the self employment path. Give a thought to it. Starting one's own shop or business has its own thrill.
I strongly feel that there are many hidden opportunities for you some of which I tried to mention as above. Make your mind and choose one of them.

    Knowledge is power.

  • I have gone through your details and what I inferred is that you were not thinking other than achieving your goal to qualify the UPSC examination and in that process, you have already lost six attempts. By going through your submissions, I would like to as a few points which could suit your aspirations even though it is not necessarily linked to fulfilling your IAS goal though it could be your primary focus. The suggestions are as follows-
    1) If you are sincere enough to crack this examination, you need to modify the method of your preparation with the inclusion of some subjects such as Philosophy, History, Geography etc though such subjects had not been your optional papers at the stage of your graduation but such selection of subjects makes sense since these are scoring subjects.
    2) For better guidance, enrol yourself in a reputed coaching institution such as Rao's study circle where you would get assistance at each stage of your preparation. They can evaluate your papers of mock tests reflecting your strength and weakness. Such a close monitoring from their end would restore your confidence to achieve your ambition towards Civil Service.
    3) Side by side side think of other goals where you could feel comfortable such as joining a coaching institution as a lecturer where they are imparting management education to the aspirants. This is one of the examples. If you want to join as a teaching profession as a tutor. You could take up the same.
    4) The other best option could be to secure some advanced diploma relating to some IT languages such as Oracle, Artificial Intelligence, Java etc so that you could enhance your value in the IT sector and with your determined plannings, you could be successful to land in a job.

  • Having attempted six times for the UPSC slot, now you may have the basic knowledge about the UPSC exam.
The present urgent need for you is to get into some relevant job. The longer you wait for a job, the more difficult it may become.
So try your best to get into any job that comes your way where the basic edibility is Graduation and/or MBA. For the present do not mind the salary. A job experience may help you to try for better jobs in due course.
If you are eligible for UPSC then you can prepare and attempt same along with continuing in a job too.
A job in hand will also boost your confidence and also open many more avenues for better career opportunities.

  • I think you might have tried for a job after your MBA. Where you obtained your MBA you have not mentioned. If you have obtained the same from famous institutes like IIMs and similar institutes, you might have got an excellent job by this time.
Already you have tried 6 times UPSC. So by this time you might have understood the requirements well and you can evaluate yourself and if you feel that you can achieve the same by making some more attempts, you can try that. But you have to try seriously and no casual approach. Take the subjects which you feel are comfortable, work hard and if necessary go for coaching to some good coaching centre and try all the options. Then you may be successful. But remember that you are losing time. As the age advances getting a job is very difficult.
So start trying seriously for a job suitable for you. You can try government jobs as well as private jobs also. Please remember that having a job is a morale boost for the individual. So give more importance for obtaining a job at least now.

  • As mentioned above, you have completed your MBA in 2015 and not doing job. That means you have spent many years in preparing UPSC exam. As you know, UPSC is a high-level competitive exam in India. It is not easy to crack. I am not discouraging you but one thing I also experienced in my life time that before preparing for the UPSC exam you should secure yourself in another job. I noticed that many students miss their golden period in preparing for this exam. When they disqualify in this exam till then their age gets over for other exam also. So, security in the job should be the prime motto because it would support your confidence. Now, you can try for a job in the MBA field. But, the employer will definitely ask about your long gap. That time give a clear answer and don't hesitate in giving a clear answer. Apart from it, you can try for teaching field. Many private colleges demand MBA-qualified teachers for teaching jobs. You will find suitable yourself there.

  • Preparing for UPSC while no job is one of the big risks as you are well sure of the possibility that you will get UPSC cleared but it just did not happen. This may be because of any reason but now, forget the past and move ahead. As you have given a total of 6 attempts and each attempt might have given you some experience in that particular field. Utilize this knowledge and do some fruitful work based on this knowledge. You can guide students online. You can start fresh and start applying for jobs if you want to do a job. If you want to do business, this is the right time to do business as all days are good and each time is the best time to start. Best luck for your future efforts.
