  • Suggestion for switching from teaching career

Keen to switch to a new field from your current teaching career? Get useful suggestions on which career is promising to switch to.

I am 32 years old and I am living in Bangaluru at present. I completed my D.Phil in history in 2018. I am having one year of experience teaching in college. Now I am thinking of switching from teaching to some other field because the salary hikes in the teaching field are not encouraging. Please suggest whether I should shift from my present job and look for a different field with more opportunities and also which sectors would be better for me to opt for.

  • Teaching is itself a good job but you are not seeing much career enhancement scope in it and want to change it and switch to some other career. One important thing is that if your age eligibility is there then you can think of appearing in some competitive exam as most of the positions and jobs today are through the competition only. Some of these competitions are in state administrative services, central subordinate services, Railway services, Postal services, posts in PSUs, and many more. In their entrance exams, some papers are related to the general knowledge, general English, aptitude related, and some logical questions etc and to that extent the preparations done by you would be common to all and you can take that advantage by preparing for some of them as per your interest and liking.
If you have a good command of teaching and as a paying job you like it then there is a possibility to look for employment in high end online/offline coaching centres which are earning good amounts of money as a large number of students are joining them who are preparing for prestigious exams like IAS, judiciary, or state public service etc. Teachers having proficiency in Arts. Culture, History, Political Science, and many such subjects are required by these coaching entities.
If you have an interest in business and want to establish your own enterprise then there are many business propositions which require to be considered in today's business environment. It is to be noted that for doing a particular business it is not necessary that you have the full knowledge of that area because today you can hire people at a nominal cost. The only thing is you should be able to manage the whole thing from financing the business to its marketing. So entering the business arena is one thing which many qualified and educated people do not consider as the first option but it has its own worth. A simple example is to open a service centre for various routine services like printing, photocopying, high-quality printing and album making, delivering the product to the customers online, accepting original documents through Whatsapp or email and completing the work assigned and submitting the product to the customers etc. This is a simple example but can be extended to so many other ideas. You can raise the money through bank loans or self-savings.

    Knowledge is power.

  • Teaching job is a respectable job but you want to switch to other career field. So, you can try for another field. There are many career options available where you can try. You can try for govt job like state Public service commission, bank service, Railway service. For detail, you can check employment news and search the internet where you will find a lot of jobs. Besides, you can register yourself at naukri.com. If your qualification matches with you then they will send you an alert. If you want to do business then you can try. Since corona time, self-employment is on the rise. You can start a business like photostat shop, cyber cafe, online service etc. You can search for the online job also.

  • You are interested to switch over to your present job since you don't see any future in the teaching profession but this might be some sort of underestimation from your side since you are not exploring the ways how you could utilise your potentials effectively. Based on your submissions, I would advise you to see a few options to be seen as suggested by my side. The points are as follows-
    1) While still in your teaching profession, you should attempt for UGC NET provided you have the scorings of 55% aggregate in your post graduation degree. Once you clear this, you will be have your opening for the lecturer-ship in the government college getting all benefits of the constituent colleges.
    2) If you are still fulfilling the eligibility criteria for appearing UPSC examination and have the inclination for it, you gear up yourself for this examination. You may opt for Philosophy, History or any subject which could raise your scores in the optional papers. Moreover take the help of some reputed institution for getting appropriate tips for the preliminary examination and the main papers of IAS. If needed, take coaching for the effective communication skills. With your determined approach, you can get through for the said examination.
    3) You can look for the Probationary Officers Banking Examination but for this you have to prepare the same thoroughly in this line. You may take the assistance of some professional institutes for achieving your desired results.
    4) If interested to acquire Management Profession, you can go ahead for the enhancement of your managerial skills which could help you to grab a job in the management profession due to to your skill sets.
    5) With your enhanced qualifications in the management, you might pick up your managerial skills to establish some business for which you had the inner urge to start a business but lacked the know how in what way could proceed such as Foundry, Paints and Dyes or any other business. In the long run, such well thought planning could result in huge profits in your business.

  • The best option for a post-graduation and D.Phil in history is the teaching profession. You will get a good salary if you get a posting in a government college and you will have a channel of promotions also. If you get a job at any university it will be much more encouraging as you can continue your research activity also. So If I were you I will continue in the teaching profession and try to clear the NET examination so that I can get into a government institute for teaching.
If you are not interested in that there may be some other general options are there. I am mentioning them below
    1. Archeology Department: For History professionals there will be good openings in this department. UPSC may be announcing these posts from time to time and you can apply for those posts.
    2. Bank Jobs: Bank jobs for any graduates and postgraduates. Selection will be done based on the performance in written and oral tests.
    3. UPSC Posts: If you have interest and your age is within the specified range you can try for these IAS/IPS and other related jobs . You can apply when the advertisement comes.
    4. State government jobs: You can apply for Group I and II posts that are being advertised by State government from time to time.

  • Getting a chance teaching profession is rare and succeeding in that profession can be done only if the aspirant possess dedicated interest. In your case if you are interested to continue in that profession, it is better to move to your interested choice otherwise your unintended mood itself drive you out from the post.

  • The first I suggest is not to quit the current job before getting a better job.
If the change you think is only because of the less salary you get now, and not because of lack of interest in the field, you can try similar jobs elsewhere where they pay you more. The better option will be to change into jobs where your qualification is suitable.

But if you are really convinced that you need to change job then you can do so. The earlier the better. There are ample opportunities available. But you should vigorously try for it. And then too, it may not be prudent to quit job without getting a better one than the current one. You are in a city where there are many opportunities in IT and non-IT sectors.

First decide which sector you want to work. Then search for suitable jobs in such sectors by searching the various job portals, personal contacts, visiting web sites of such employers etc. You may also search in the job advertisements in newspapers, career magazines and employment specialized publications. ISC also has a Jobs section.

  • Teaching is a noble profession. All the schools and colleges are run for the primary purpose of education only. They do not work for money but today's scenario is something different. This is the reason why professors or teachers are not getting enough salaries or salaries hike. They have to rely on a second source of income. Industry expands every year and profit is shared in form of salary hikes.

If you want to switch to another profession, you have to make sure that you will be getting a proper salary and growth at the same time. No one knows the future. Hence, it is necessary to think all these factors before taking job switch decision from teaching to non-teaching job.
