  • The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was established in the year 1851 and started its operations in geoscientific activities. After independence, it focused more on mineral exploration and a lot of geological and geophysical activities were assigned to it. Most of the work carried out by GSI is in the nature of surveying the mineral areas and research and technical work for mineral identification and mineral exploration. The surveyors, geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and other technical persons are contributing their work in GSI for an integrated approach to the national mineral exploration and exploitation. Many departments like Coal India, ONGC, Hindustan copper etc have a close association with GSI for information and knowledge exchange for formulating a better exploration policy.
The duties of a surveyor in GSI are mainly associated with the fieldwork in the prospective mineral areas. These minerals could be on the surface or subsurface or deep inside the Earth. There are various methods of surveying for these prospects and surveyors help the geologists and geophysicists in their high-end work of prospecting and locating mineral belts in our country in various locations. The geophysical parties are carrying out the survey using the sophisticated reflection and refraction technologies utilising the sonic waves for subsurface mapping and for that highly improvised instruments are used across a large area to image the subsurface and the surveyors have a crucial role to play in those tasks. Some of the tasks are very long and people have to remain in camps in remote and inaccessible areas for months together to complete the scheduled survey work. Of course, they get some off period also before starting the next session of work. It is not that all the surveyors are put in fieldwork. Generally, it is done on a turn basis and then they are posted in office work also where they assist the scientists and researchers in their interpretation work which they do after analysing the voluminous field data collected during the surveys.
GSI being a Govt department the job prospects are very good as all the facilities are provided to the employees as per the Govt rules and regulations. My personal opinion about this is that job of a surveyor in GSI is a very good job for making a career.

    Knowledge is power.

  • The Geological Survey of India is a scientific organisation that will make and update the information on national mineral wealth and assess the resources. This will be done by surveys on the ground, in sea and oceans, and airborne surveys. They will conduct investigations on mineral resources that are available by multidisciplinary scientific surveys. In addition to the above, they will conduct fundamental research using various latest technologies that are emerging. The findings of GSI will be very important for the development of the country.
The job profile of a surveyor will be as follows.
    1. Data collection, data processing and computation etc. as per the objective of the survey in the field as well as in the office. This is to be carried out using the available technology/methods. The planning and instructions given should be followed while conducting the work.
    2. He has to assist the Officer concerned in the planning of work. He should also participate in making estimates for the projects planned

    7. He is responsible for the health of the equipment and instruments that are being used in their duty including the software.
    8. He has to carry out research work in the areas of his work and the objectives of GSI
    9. He may be responsible for preparing technical instructions for various roles under him
    10. He should officiate as the section officer in the absence of the seniors.
    11. In addition to the above, any other official jobs that are being assigned by the seniors and higher officials.

GSI is a very good organisation and there are good chances for Geology and Geophysic PGs and PhDs and there will be good career growth for qualified and sincere people.

  • Geological Survey of India is an organisation engaged in the assessment of our mineral reserves and its extent of magnitude lying inside the different locations such as ground, sea and airborne surveys. Since this constitutes valuable wealth of the nation, we cannot leave this reserve as such. To assess the quantum of resources of such minerals we have recruited fleet of surveyors so that they can update their jobs in these areas to pin point the quality of our mineral deposits and its concentrations in the different fields such as air, water and land. The surveyors would examine its occurrence with the different scientific techniques known to them apart from keeping themselves touch with the latest innovations which could facilitate their jobs.
The findings of GSI are equally important both in terms of computing of the exact reserves of our mineral wealth and its its judicious use for the prosperity of the nation.
The following is the job profile of a surveyor -
    1) He has to carry our his Research Work on regular basis making his job updated and apprise the same of his higher ups so that GSI could take appropriate steps regarding its upkeep and uses.
    2) He would take up the role of his senior in case emergency arises so that no dislocation of the work happens within the organisation.
    3) Weekly, Monthly reports are to be prepared as per objective of the organisation and a surveyor would assist in enhancing of his organisation.
    4) The surveyor would ensure that data processing, transformation and computing takes in time so that ongoing job is not affected.
    5) He must be well versed in the data management and should ensure that all the essential records pertaining to his job is available in his storage.
    6) Periodical checking up of Instruments and Software under his possession.
    7) He would take care of the staffs working under him encouraging to take interest in learning their job assignments.
    8) Undertaking different projects for the verification of their calculated reserves of the minerals already reported to higher ups so that anomaly if persisting could be rectified.
