The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was established in the year 1851 and started its operations in geoscientific activities. After independence, it focused more on mineral exploration and a lot of geological and geophysical activities were assigned to it. Most of the work carried out by GSI is in the nature of surveying the mineral areas and research and technical work for mineral identification and mineral exploration. The surveyors, geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and other technical persons are contributing their work in GSI for an integrated approach to the national mineral exploration and exploitation. Many departments like Coal India, ONGC, Hindustan copper etc have a close association with GSI for information and knowledge exchange for formulating a better exploration policy.
The duties of a surveyor in GSI are mainly associated with the fieldwork in the prospective mineral areas. These minerals could be on the surface or subsurface or deep inside the Earth. There are various methods of surveying for these prospects and surveyors help the geologists and geophysicists in their high-end work of prospecting and locating mineral belts in our country in various locations. The geophysical parties are carrying out the survey using the sophisticated reflection and refraction technologies utilising the sonic waves for subsurface mapping and for that highly improvised instruments are used across a large area to image the subsurface and the surveyors have a crucial role to play in those tasks. Some of the tasks are very long and people have to remain in camps in remote and inaccessible areas for months together to complete the scheduled survey work. Of course, they get some off period also before starting the next session of work. It is not that all the surveyors are put in fieldwork. Generally, it is done on a turn basis and then they are posted in office work also where they assist the scientists and researchers in their interpretation work which they do after analysing the voluminous field data collected during the surveys.
GSI being a Govt department the job prospects are very good as all the facilities are provided to the employees as per the Govt rules and regulations. My personal opinion about this is that job of a surveyor in GSI is a very good job for making a career.
