  • Not getting the mistake in DOB in documents corrected while applying abroad

Are you having problems with getting the DOB corrected on your passport and worried that it may create an issue with admissions to a foreign university? Quickly find out if other documents are sufficient to get admission and what other steps you can take to fix the passport issue.

I'm currently in high school. I want to apply abroad next year for my further education but there's a difference in the date of birth on my passport and my birth certificate. There's a difference in the month only, while the rest is the same. My passport has the wrong DOB and the passport office isn't changing it despite providing all the legal documents to them and pleading with them.

I would like to know if with my IELTS with my passport DOB I can apply for university admissions along with the other documents, and explain to them my situation. Will I be able to get admission or will it create a mess and my application for admission will be rejected?

  • You are in high school. That means you are a minor I feel. So there are two ways to correct the mistake in the Date of Birth in your passport.
    1. You can apply as per the procedure mentioned on their website for the reissue of the passport before you become a major.
    2. You have to apply for a reissue of your passport once you become a major. While applying for that also you can get the DOB corrected by submitting a valid proof of date of birth like a Birth certificate issued by a competent authority. if they found that you are submitting a fake document, they will not allow the change. They will not consider your school certificate as proof of DOB.
    3. You have to pay the fee as suggested on the website.
As you have still time to apply immediately you apply and there is no way the passport authorities will reject your application. What is the reason they are telling for not accepting your request? If your certificates are correct, you can go legally also. You can take the help of a lawyer who is experienced in these matters.
When you apply for foreign admissions all the certificates should have the same date of birth. If there is a difference it will be difficult to make them agree without proper written documented proof.

  • Now you are a student of class 10th. So, you would be considered a minor. There are different methods to be corrected your DOB which can take information from the website. First, you can apply for correction of DOB before minor age. And second, you can apply for a reissue of your passport once you become a major. For that, you will have to produce valid proof of date of birth like a Birth certificate issued by a competent authority. Besides, you have to pay some fees as per the information available on the website. It would indeed create problems in future when you go for admission to foreign countries because they will demand the same DOB in all documents. At that time you will feel more difficult in convincing them.

  • A passport is prepared by the hired agencies as per the data provided by the applicant and of course the supporting documents. Sometimes due to oversight or wrong document reference, it is likely that there might be some errors in the passport which are only known at a later time. But there is no problem because there is a stipulated procedure for applying for a correction in the passport and for that one has to visit the passport website and make an appointment for the interview cum counselling session where all the correct documents along with supporting data are to be shown to the agency people and once they are convinced that there was some mistake cropped up in the passport earlier then they will correct it and take back the incorrect passport and issue a fresh one. They would charge the applicable fee also for that. If you are not conversant with the online process and other formalities that are required in the passport correction process then you can take the help of an agent who will help you and guide you in the matter. The agent would of course charge some fee for his services.
When you visit the passport website (https://www.passportindia.gov.in) then you have to select 'Re-issue of Passport' under which change in existing personal particulars is carried out.

  • Since you have decided to apply abroad next year for further study, all your documents shall be without any mistake or mismatch to avoid any disappointment after your hard effort upon applying. Try to do correction before going through it. Including Birth Certificate thus Passport.

You can apply for re-issue the Passport for particular changes even if you are a minor - as same as last time you applied and got it. This time you have to be very careful on filling up the form and attaching relevant proving documents.

From the following official link and Question number 21, go through it to learn complete info before applying it.

Also, go through "Documents Advisor" on its homepage for preparation and submission. Hope you can solve it in a right way that would help you for all the documents in the future without any issues and consequences.

  • Sometimes mistakes might crop up due to the negligence of the officials while entering the figures in the passport and if such is the case with you, you need to take corrective step for the early correction of this mistake. I am suggesting a few points which could suit you. You may have a look on the following points-
    1) Since you are a student of class ten, you should not remain in hurry to get the passport corrected so early but this needs to be done prior to passing out your class twelve.
    2) Ensure the authenticity of date of birth submitted in your school record and if the same is correct, proceed for the next point.
    3) You will have to approach passport office and make a request to the concerned officials for the correction of the error cropping up in your passport document. They might ask you regarding the authenticity of your DOB submitted in your school. If needed, you will have to approach the hospital where you were born or take the help of tehsildar of the village maintaining the records of both date of birth and death of expiry of the deceased.
    4) In case, you still feel difficulties in sorting out the case, approach the lawyer for his valuable advice.
