  • Should I leave my present low level Govt job and switch to IT field?

Unsure about whether to continue with your present government job due to a low post and little chance of promotion? You can consider the advice here on whether or not it would be a good decision to quit the job and switch to the IT field for a better salary and growth prospects.

Presently I am doing a Government job (Sachivalayam job in AP) which is at a lower level with a salary near 25k and the chance of promotion is also low. At present, I want to switch my career to the IT field. Would it be a good decision to resign from my present Govt job and join the IT field?

The following points needed to be pondered prior to final selection of your course. The main points would help you to arrive at the right decision.
    1) The old concepts with the taking up C++, Java, Visual Basics are outdated. Hence you have to make your queries regarding the current trends such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Oracle, ERP etc.
    2) it does not matter that you are currently in the low level job in a government enterprise but the only thing which is required at this point is to identify any such course of your likeness for which there is tge huge demand apart from your interest for the selected course.
    3) If required, you may attend a counselling session of a reputed coaching institution where they would identify your potentials and interests towards your choice. This will help you in eliminating your confusion in the process of your choice. They would ultimately strengthen your confidence in choosing the right course.

  • In case you are already qualified for IT sector job, then you can straight away try for a new job in IT sector, However leave the current job only after getting the better new job.
In case you are not suitably qualified for an IT job, then acquire the required qualification by pursuing the necessary course or training.
You can also try for 'higher level' jobs in the Government sector also by applying and appearing for the tests etc.

But before looking for a change of job blindly, try to gather sufficient information about jobs, career prospects, salary and compensation at various levels, the needed qualification and/or expertise etic in the IT sector.

  • You are working in a government department and we must try to understand that there is a very good job security in a government organisation. Apart from that there are good facilities also in the government service because of various allowances and facilities for children education and medical treatments. So the decision of leaving a government job is not so easy and it has to be assessed after considering all the pros and cons of the matter.
You have not mentioned your qualification but I assume that you have some good basic knowledge in the computer area as you are contemplating to shift to IT area for a better career and remuneration. One thing which is very important is to understand that IT area has advanced to quite a good degree and there are new techniques and methods being invented in this field and old methods are going in the background. To cope up with this situation one has to acquire some qualification through attending some niche courses in IT area. Some of these are digital marketing, cloud computing, data science, AI, robotics, latest programming languages like 'Python', and other emerging areas.
If you are conversant with these new developments and hope to attain proficiency in them then it makes sense to think for a change of career at this stage.
What I would suggest is that do not leave your job at this juncture and first attend some online courses in the IT and computer area and once you develop your knowledge in this field then you can try applying in IT companies for an appropriate job. If you are successful in getting a job of your choice then you can resign from the present job.
There are some sites like Google Garage where basic computer training is provided free of cost and they offer good material to study and after answering the questions after a chapter one can go ahead to the next chapter. Once you get a feel of what is going around in the IT area then you have freedom to choose some good course from the online agencies like Coursera, Unacademy, Udemy, Udacity, Hubspot Academy, CBT Nuggets etc.
There is a saying that - All that glitters is not gold. So if you are fascinated by the IT world but your skills and qualifications are not up to the mark then you will have to acquire the latest skills and techniques before you can chalk out the plan to switch your present job.

    Knowledge is power.

  • First of all, no job is low level or low-profile job unless you are dissatisfied with it. You need to keep in mind a couple of things before switching your job.

    1. You need to be capable enough to join the IT field. There are various jobs in the IT field and the salary also varies according to the job profile. If you have an experience in the IT field or your educational background is in that domain it may not be a difficult task. As you are thinking of switching to the IT field you must have some plans regarding the domains and the companies in which you can join. Find out whether there is any known person working in such organizations and consult with that person about future prospects.

    2. Since you are already in a job, you should resign only after getting a better opportunity. Better opportunity doesn't necessarily mean a better salary, it should have a good prospect. When you are joining in a new domain you will be treated as a fresher and naturally, the salary will be low. Enquire about the salaries and other opportunities you will get as a fresher and then only think of switching your job.

    3. If you have no knowledge in the IT domain then you need to have sufficient knowledge and attend different certification courses to become eligible to work in the domain. This may be time-consuming for you since you are already in a job.

Lastly, there is no reason to think that growth opportunities are there only in the IT field. Since you are in a government service you can appear for various competitive examinations in other government sectors, like Civil services for example, where the growth prospect and responsibility will increase. As you are already in a government job that can also be a good option.

  • As mentioned above that you are not satisfied with your present job and interested in the IT sector. But before switching over to the present job you should have good knowledge regarding the IT field. At present, you are in a government job which is fully secure and it is a big advantage. In the case of salary and designation wise, it may be low but one good thing is there about a government job that there are many other benefits which are not possible in the private sector. I am not against your present decision but before leaving your present job you must have good knowledge of that niche in which you want to enter. If needed, you should do some certification course which will add to your qualification and would help in getting a job.

  • Look before you leap. Think twice before you take a decision. Remember the old saying that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bushes. The following points are very important for you to take a final decision. Go through them and then take a decision.
    1. A government job is more secure. You may not be removed from the services till your retirement unless otherwise you do a big mistake or behave illegally. Your job is secured. But in a private organisation that security is not there. Any moment even though there is no fault from your side, they may ask you to get out and settle your account as per the terms and conditions of your appointment.
    2. Your job may be a pensionable job whereas in private jobs there will not be any pension except EPF pension which may be very meagre. The pension for government employees is reasonable and with that amount wife and husband can manage easily. I know many private employees who are suffering to manage their life with the reserves that have in the banks.
    3. You have not mentioned your qualification and age. You said that you are getting up to Rs.25,000/-. Getting an IT job for the students who completed their studies long back is very difficult and a fresh joiner in a good IT company may not get more than Rs.25.000/- initially. Afterwards, it may increase. If you are thinking that you will get immediately a higher salary I say you are under the wrong impression. Only qualified people from reputed institutes may get higher salaries but not all.
    4. Before taking a decision just look around and enquire about the pros and cons of jobs in IT.
    5. If you feel that joining a private organisation in the IT field is better, you have to start updating your knowledge in the field and get some skills and certificates and then start applying for well-reputed companies where the salary will be as per your expectations.
    6. Under no circumstances till you get an appointment letter for an organisation don't resign from the job you have now.
    7. While working if you improve your qualification, you may get a chance in other government departments as an internal candidate and you may get a post in the IT-related jobs in the government sector itself. I know many people who joined in a lower job and shifted to other jobs in the government itself after improving their qualifications as an internal candidate. You can think along these lines.

  • No one wants to leave a good government job in present-day conditions when everyone around is struggling to just secure a job unless one is really dissatisfied. As the job market is shrinking and everyday competition is increasing manifold it will not be a good option to leave an already existing job until you have valid qualifications and skills for the job you want to pursue. As you have not mentioned any of your qualifications I am assuming you might have some sort of basic knowledge about IT and how it works. And you have some knowledge you need to improve and enhance it through various online courses, learning various programming languages. And for starting you can do some freelancing as well while learning these languages but leaving your job directly without any security net is quite a risky thing to do.
At last, you need to place all the pros and cons before you of leaving the job and then decide because no one else can decide what is best for you. Many a people left a very secure future in pursuance of their passion and did succeed after all it is a matter of one believing in his/her own ability and confidence as well that can do wonders but if you are still thinking then make that list for your self according to the current job market for IT sector and your skill then only go for it.

  • If you are very well sure of what you are saying is true and if you have the right knowledge of IT (with the latest developments in it), and if you think money will be more than the current government field, then switch to the IT field but it involves risk of unsureness of what would happen if you will not get settled with that IT job. While current government jobs give you security. You never know when the IT bubble will burst but your present government job will give you better pay in the coming years. Consult your family members and then take decision.
