  • VIT Chennai or newer IIITs for computer or electronics engineering courses

Unsure whether to pursue a computer engineering course at VIT, Chennai, or at one of the newer IIITs? Get suggestions about which institute and course would be the best to join.

I would like to know which is better of the following with reasons-
    VIT Chennai - CSE
    IIIT Sri City - CSE
    IIIT Kanchipuram - ECE
    IIIT Kottayam - CSE
    IIIT Dharwad - CSE

Please suggest/clarify on how to decide among the above?

  • IIITs are always in the front even though they are new. Following are the important points which will support my statement.
    1. VIT is a private institute and the fee structure is very high when compared to IITs. Even below-average students get into VIT in Management quota by paying huge amounts as donations.
    2. Getting a seat in VIT is easier than getting a seat in IIITs.
    3. The teaching faculty in IIITs are more experienced and qualified. But VIT we may find some normal faculty members also.
    4. Admission to IIITs is through a common entrance test for all IIITs whereas, for VIT admission, the institute conducts its own entrance test,
    5. Number of seats in VIT are more than in any single IIIT. The classes in VIT are overcrowded whereas in IIITs the number of seats are limited. Personal attention may be more in IIITs.
    6. As far as placements are concerned, the average salary that is offered will be more for IIITs than VIT.
    7. As of now the IIITs mentioned may be newer. But it will take 4 years for you to complete your degree and by that time all these IIITs may become well established and chances of getting placement in a reputed organisation will be more.
    8. IIIT tag is having its own value and internationally, you will get an identification. You can go for abroad posting also after completing your course in IIITs.

  • There is a vast difference between IIT and VIT. IITs are central government institutes which are located across India. They are under the ownership of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is a very reputed institute and here very difficult to get a seat in this institute. For getting admission into this institute you need to qualify for the IIT - JEE entrance exam which is conducted all over India. Only intelligent students qualify this exam. It is a competitive exam. Here seat is very limited. Those student who passes out from this institute gets good job opportunities in India as well as in foreign countries. This Institute has its recognition and value and no other institute can be compared with it, especially in the technical field. Whereas VIT is a private institute. This Institute conducts its own entrance test. The fee is very high. Seats are more so it is very easy to get a seat. Average students get seats very easily. Placement depends on students quality.

  • IIIT is relatively a new Institution having its branches in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Jabalpur engaged in offering quality education in the information technology apart from other branches such Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and other courses. However, of all the existing IIIT's Hyderabad might be ranked No 1 in terms of quality education, selection of all the essential modules in the course essential for the aspirants to have sound basics and offering right platform for the interaction of the promising students to come in contact with prominent employers to pick them up for their future assignments.
The points listed below will support my statements-
    1) VIT is a privately managed institution having their Engineering Colleges in the different places such as Vellore, Bhopal etc and to secure admission in these colleges, fee structure for most of the students are beyond their reach unless they are backed with loans provided by the Banks with a high rate of interest. This could result in financial pressure to the guardians providing their wards for such a technical education.
    2) It would not be difficult to have a seat in VIT Institution in case an aspirant secures 85 percentiles in IIT mains but for getting a seat in IIIT it is somewhat difficult calling for better preparation to qualify the entrance test.
    3) The teaching faculties of IIIT are more capable, learned and are more capable to pay attention to the students than the faculties engaged in teaching at Vellore .
    4) IIIT follows the centralised process of admission where admission to the aspirants is secured on the basis of their performance in the qualifying examination but in Vellore, the intake of students are followed with separate system of examinations in the different institutions.
    5) Intake of students in IIIT are normally less than VIT due to their restricted patterns but VIT accommodates maximum possible students for grabbing maximum financial benefits.
    6) The aspirants getting offers in IIIT can expect better salaries average being 35 Lakhs for the students of 1920 - 21 sessions and the highest being 56 Lakhs and for the VIT students it is incredibly low average being 18 Lakhs.
    7) IIIT tag will keep the passed out students moral high with better placement opportunities and their global acceptance for their enriched studies but this recognition is not likely to the VIT students.

  • VIT is a privately managed organisation and if you compare it with the IIITs as mentioned in your query then definitely IIITs should be preferred for doing the required course. The reputation and tag of IIITs is accepted not only in our country but in outside countries also.
As regards the admission process it is definitely difficult to get admission in IIIT as compared to VIT. Many students apply for a seat in IIITs and VIT is a second choice for them. VIT being a private institute they have some leverage in increasing the seats but that is not possible in IIITs.
I would suggest to try for admission in IIIT and if not successful then go for VIT.
One important thing that I will like to mention in this matter is that sometimes institutions do not matter but what matters is the caliber of the student. If a student is very good and can score high marks then he can get campus selection from any of the reputed institute in our country. So we should not have the confusion in our minds that if we do a degree from a reputed and top institute then only our career will be made. I have a strong difference at this point and I believe that if the student is good and can put a hard work in his studies then he can make a career from any of the good institution in our country. There are some private engineering colleges which have a very excellent connection with many companies in India and abroad where they can get their students recruited only thing is the student should be performing well.

    Knowledge is power.
