  • Salary and other details when switching Government jobs

Planning to switch government jobs? Find out important aspects when you switch, including service duration, salary, etc.

I have questions about what happens when a person changes his government job from one job to another senior category job. Take an example of a person who's age is 45 and his current basic salary is 59500/- in L11 and he gets selected for a new government job with a basic salary 56100/- in L-14 after probation. My questions are-
    1) Will his/her previous service time period be added to the new job?

    2) In the probation period will he/she get a fixed amount of salary or his/her previous job salary?

    3) After probation, his basic salary will start from 56100/-, or will he/she get his/her old job's basic salary equivalent to L-14 (like in the example, his/her old basic salary is higher than the new job's basic salary)?

  • Since you have got an assignment in a different government job with the change of your status such as L - 14 from the last one being L - 11 and as result of change of your job, your basic, too, has changed from Rs 59500/- to Rs 56100/- due to your promotion benefits in the wake of change of your service. The following points may please be seen-
    1) Now you are in dilemma whether the service rendered by you in the previous organisation will be taken into account in the existing regime or not. In your case, you have not been promoted in your old organisation and the benefits of fitment, adjustment of basic, seniority benefits and other attendant benefits will not be applicable. However the case will be different if you have applied this post intimating your next employer through the proper channels. If the application is routed through proper channel, your length of experience of the previous service will be taken into account as your experience.
    2) During the probation period, he/ she would be entitled to receive the minimum basic salary ie Rs 56,100/- in your existing grade apart from existing DA applicable to your case if the terms and conditions are indicated in your offer letter. If there is the mention of fixed amount to be paid during the probation period, this will be applicable to you according to drafting of your appointment letter.
    3) After completion of the probation period he/ she will be fitted in the grade scale of Rs 56, 100/- coupled with prescribed DA in your grade scale. In no case, he would be entitled to get the old benefits of the previous organisation which he might have enjoyed by way of his normal promotion.

  • Whatever it may be. The mentality of an employed person should never based on salary but on satisfaction. If the mind sticked to salary the switching thought will roam always and thereby concentration in the present job will get diminished. The result may be termination or dismissal which totally affect the future. In any Government job the salary difference may not be much.

  • 1. When a person is changing from one government job to another government job, it is mandatory to apply through the proper channel. Many government organisations ask for NOC from the present employer. If you have followed any one of the two options, your service in other organisations will be considered for the calculation of your retirement benefits. But if a person changes a job without following the proper procedure you may lose the service you put up in the old organisation. You have not given any clue about this in your question.,
    2. Once you change your job, the old job salary will not have any relevance here. The payments during probation will be as per the terms and conditions of your employment. Many government jobs will have a rule saying that only a basic salary will be paid during the probation period. So you have to refer your appointment letter to get a clarification about this aspect.
    3. After probation you will get all the benefits and perks as per the appointment letter given to you by the new organisation. No organisation will pay as per the salary you were getting in your old job, They will pay as per the terms and conditions of your appointment in this new organisation.
For all practical purposes after joining the new job, no rule of the old organisation will be applicable. The rules and regulations of the new organisation are only applicable.

  • When a person is switching from one Govt job to another then he has to resign in the first job and then join in the new job. In all probability you must have applied through proper channel and you would be getting a NOC which would be required to be shown when you join in your new position. You might also have submitted that NOC beforehand to your new office. In Govt office when you resign from the first position then the remuneration story finishes there as regards to salary etc and you will now get the new salary pack as per the new position with all the Govt benefits that are existing in that position in that department. There is no mixing between the two jobs as they are totally different from the employer's perspective.
There are some general things which you can note and one is that you might be having a Govt PF account where every month some amount is deducted and deposited in it. Now same account will continue and deductions from the new position would start accumulating there.
Another thing is your earlier experience will also be counted in future. Suppose in future you apply for some higher position then it is obvious that your old service will also be counted for your selection to that higher position. To that extent the old service benefits will accrue to you.
It is also possible that because of your long service in the earlier position you were getting more pay than what you might get in the new position in the beginning but that is not an issue because all that will be compensated here soon with larger increments and new pay scales (slabs) etc.

    Knowledge is power.

  • Point-wise reply to your question:-

    1. Previous service will only be added if the concerned official joined the new post applying through proper channel. For changing jobs, it is seen whether both the jobs (old one and new one) are permanent in nature.
    2. The second question is not fully clear. The pay in the probation period will be as per the appointment letter. Generally, in the probation period (please note the word is 'probation' and not 'training'; In Government, probation and training are different concepts), a probationer gets minimum basic pay in the scale (in this case Rs. 56100/- in L-14), DA, HRA, and Transport Allowance plus any other allowance as admissible in that particular job.
    3. If the employee successfully completes the probation, he/she will continue getting increments and DA, HRA and Transport Allowance as per the extant rule, like other employees.

From the questions, I have a feeling that you do not clearly understand the Government pay structures. If that is so, feel free to ask supplementary questions. I will try to reply.
