  • Can one continue his engineering course after a break

Do you want to know whether there is any option to continue a professional course after a long break in between? Does any university permit the same? Follow this thread for details.

I took admission for engineering in 2011 and studied up to third year ie 2014. But I was unable to complete the course and discontinued after the third year. Can I now get admission in any deemed university to complete the final year and backlogs to get the degree certificate. Is there any university that allows continuation of a professional course after such a long gap? Kindly guide me.

  • I do not think there is a eligibility criteria for those who discontinued the Engineering long back and in your case it is 8 years and therefore the intake of admission may not be possible for varied reasons. As you know that the Engineering admissions are conducted through the national and state level common entrance tests and those who qualified are being listed through the convenor quota and the paid seats in the sought for Engineering colleges and therefore there is no scope for discontinued students to get admission. However please contact your own college from where you studied and discontinued and ask for the remedy as the private student. If the college agrees, they can accommodate you on the rolls as you were already in their academics. Please approach your college and try for the luck if possible.

Even this challenging situation would ease

  • It will appear disappointing to you if I say that your past course of Engineering is not sustainable due to the reasons being mentioned below-
    1) According to your own submission, you discontinued the course in the year 2014 while studying in the third year and currently you are thinking of sustaining your studies for the same course. With respect to technical education, some regulations have been framed implying that you have to complete the course with the grace time of three years since you started your course. In your case, there is the violation of the existing rule. In your case, it could be NFT case implying that you are not fit for the technical course.
    2) You may contact the Principal of your Engineering College to resolve your doubts and what best could be done from your end to manage this difficult situation.
I hope they would agree to start the course afresh and in that case, total timing of the course would be quite appreciable and it might not be justifiable in your case.
Anyway meet your Principal for the clarification purposes.

  • It is not possible to get a valid degree certificate by completing the 4th year of your engineering after a gap of almost 8 years. UGC rules will not allow you for that.
You joined an engineering course in the year 2011.
That means you might have completed your course in the year 2015.
As per UGC rules, a candidate should complete his course within a maximum of 3 years from the year in which he is supposed to complete his course.
That means you should have completed your course on or before 2018. But this is 2022. So you may not get any chance for completing it now. Some unrecognised universities and institutes may give you a chance but it will not be useful to you in any way in your life.
You may have to try for admission as a fresh candidate in the first year of the course again and you have to study all four years again.
You have to contact a university to which you wanted to get admitted and talk to the concerned department to know the rules and regulations. Then you have to make a decision.

  • As per the existing rules and regulations and UGC stipulations engineering colleges give two extra years for completing a course. It means that if the course is for 4 years then one can complete it in total 6 years. In your case you joined the course in 2011 so for you the doors for completing it are already closed in 2017.
Now let us come to the reasons why you left the course halfway. Was it a whimsical decision or a genuine family problem like death of the father and one was compelled to do a job to take care of the family members etc. If it is such a genuine reason then one can definitely apply for a sympathetic view in one's own college/university and special permission might be obtained. There had been cases like that.
You can go through that aspect if it fits in your case.
