Android TV & Google TV both offer the same selection of smart TV apps and games. One can have voice commands with Google Assistant. They also offer media streaming, smart home controls, and casting with Chromecast. In both the systems one can access Google's Stadia cloud gaming service.
Where and how they differ is only a matter of presentation and how one can view the contents on the home page. Android TV's approach to the user is based on apps rather than personal taste. At the same time Google TV is displaying the options based on Google's machine learning, Google Assistant, and Google's Knowledge Graph information which are based on one's viewing habits. This is some type of artificial intelligence embedded in the system. Google TV is the latest fad in the smart TV segment and it is obvious that people would choose to go for it if there is no considerable price differential between the two.
Interesting thing is that Android TV which was released in 2014 is a derivative of Google's Android mobile operating system, offering access to the Google Play Store for apps and games on our TV while also giving us handy features like Google Cast support and voice control via Google Assistant. The home screen interface of the Android TV encourage content discovery by suggesting shows and movies from our apps and subscription services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and YouTube.
Google TV came in the market in 2020 when it was launched alongside Chromecast. It offered Google powered set-top boxes that are now being sold by major manufacturers.
Companies like Sony and Bravia are already
planning to load Google TV in their products but it is not known how the old Android TVs will get a fix to get them changed to Google TV presentation, if they wished so, without spending additional money.
Some companies like
NVIDIA, Xiaomi Mi, and Sony have introduced a revamped user interface that appears similar to Google TV and more such innovations are being made in this area so that the various models could survive in the market.
In such a scenario if cost differential is not an issue then one can go for a Google TV.
Knowledge is power.
