  • Skills to switch from IT audit to core electrical job

Planning to switch from an audit job in the IT field to a core field in the electronics and electrical field? Learn about the best skills you would require to acquire to make this switch in your career.

I am currently working as an IT Auditor in a Big 4 firm with one year of experience. Previously I worked for an automotive supplier company for 6 months. I am an electrical and electronics graduate in 2020. What skills should I have to switch from IT Audit to a core electrical company?

  • It is good that you have decided to shift from the IT sector to your Core field. These days many engineering graduates are showing interest in IT jobs more than their core field. Already you have a graduation in EEE and that itself can get you a good job if you have good subject knowledge.
Eventhough you want to shift to the electrical field, your IT skills and auditing skills will come in handy there also. Try to learn some computer languages like Python, Java and C +, C++ etc.
You can think of acquiring the following skills.
    1. Engineering Design: This is a special skill required for engineers who want to work in their core field. You might have covered this subject to some extent in tour graduation. But if you can get some certificate course and diploma in Engineering Design you will have better chances to get a job in that field. Many electrical companies recruit engineers to serve in this department. Identifying problems, understanding the problem deeply and then finding out a solution for the same will be a part of this job.
    2. Auto CAD; Computer-aided design is one of the best subjects that will be useful for electrical engineers who wanted to spend their time in this field. In this AutoCAD version, there are some programs that are useful for electrical engineers in designing circuits and related areas. One should get trained in this for a progressive career.
    3. Automation: This is the subject almost all process industries are looking for. Electrical and electronic engineers can develop their skills in Programmable logic controllers (PLC) technology. Working knowledge in integrating the process tool with PLC technology will add value to the candidate.
    4. Matlab: Learning Matlab is very important for an electrical engineer to test and understand how the design made by them will perform. Once a design is made the same can be tested by using this and understanding how is the design performance.
    5. Project Management: Any Engineer who is interested in working in the core field and going to senior positions requires the skill of managing Projects and people. People who are having a certificate or diploma in Project Management will be preferred over others and the salary and perks for the people having experience and qualification in this area are always preferred.

  • I am rather delighted to see that you are more interested in your core branch rather than your inclination for the IT jobs which currently most of the aspirants would choose IT field because of wider promotion prospects apart from being placed in higher bracket of incomes as their emoluments. Since you are an engineering graduate in EEE, you know the areas where where you can be better placed including the public sector undertakings of the different organisations such as BHEL, Coal India Ltd, ONGC, DVC etc where the requirements of these organisations are indicated specifically for the EEE Graduate Engineers.
You have to fine tune your acquired skills with the thorough studies of your syllabus so that you can clear the written test organised by them apart from clearing the oral test which follows after the written test. The Board of interview would assess your inherent potentials including your intelligence to tackle the situation in the critical phase. With a little practice but on consistent basis, you can get through the same.
    2) Automation - In this area, you have to show your inclination for Programme Logic Control ( PLC) Technology and updating your knowledge in this field would enhance your demand in the automation field for which there is the huge demand of such experts.
    3) Auto Cad - Computer Aided Design would help you to use your skills which you have acquired in your engineering field and your acquaintance in this field would improve your career prospects.
    4) If you are proficient in the programming language such as Java, Python, Oracle etc apart from your domain, you will have your demands for varied jobs in your organisation and you may remain ahead of others for your painstaking attitudes.
    5) Project Management- Going to the higher posts in the management is extremely difficult unless you are aware of managing the people apart from the different projects existing in the organisation. Your contribution in the project field would keep you updated in this area leading to your bright future.

  • I understand that you are already having knowledge in your core area and as you were away in some other job so you want to know as what additional skills are required for coming back to the careers in the core line. The field of Electrical and Electronics is a very big field and there are certain subdivisions and each has its own unique learning. Then there are various job functions also which differ from one to another. You can sample some of the jobs in electrical and electronics area by visiting the job page in this site itself and select the appropriate category and have a feel of the things. You can as well visit some other job portals in the internet also to scan through that information.
Some of these job functions are like designing of electrical and electronic equipment, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, jobs related to electric power generation, related to transmission lines, jobs related to accessory machineries like big transformers and other equipment, related to CAD/CAM, supplying, erection, and maintenance of the city lifts in multi-storeyed houses, project management in electrical and electronic fields, related to drawing, coding, and specifying the equipment for global sales or tenders, estimation and supervisory control in electrical projects, maintenance and management of computerised compact electrical systems etc.
If you intend to go back to your core discipline then you must be having some idea as in which field you would like to try for a job. Why I am telling this is because if the area is of your liking and interest then there are good chances that you might also excel in that. So if you can choose some element from the above options or you have something else in your mind then it would make sense to acquire some certificate or diploma course in that. Today we have many online agencies which impart very good courses as per the need of the person in a variety of subjects and you can take advantage of that by paying the fees in that portal.
Some of the popular portals and online education sites which are reputed for their offers of various courses are Coursera, Unacademy, Udemy, Edx, Udacity, Memrise, Skillshare, Linkedin, Alison, MIT OpenCourseWare etc.
You can first decide about the course in which you are interested to acquire learning and then try for a job and accordingly acquire the requisite learning from one of the above portals.
Just to help you in the matter there are some emerging technologies where an electrical engineer can play a good role and you can get more information about them by visiting the relevant sites and consider them also as an option as you have recently worked in an IT/IT audit related organisation. These technologies are electrical vehicles, smart grids, artificial intelligence, wireless power transfer, drones, energy storage, robotics etc. If you have some specific query about anything in this matter then you are welcome to make a query in this discussion thread itself so that the experts in this site can throw more light on that particular aspect.

  • Dear Sir, thank you so much for the guidance. I am particularly interested to provide data driven solutions using AI & ML algorithms for Smart grid/ microgrid problems. I also did a project similar to this topic which is Adaptive protection scheme of microgrids using intelligent electronic devices. I have intermediate knowledge on python and doing courses currently in udemy to sharpen my skills. Could you please suggest me if there are any courses related to this field? Also could you please suggest me how should I target dream companies like Siemens or GE Renewable who work on renewable energy with Dara Science? Thank you!
