  • Negative balance in savings account due to non maintenance charges

Are you facing issues with your bank regarding payment of maintenance charges or closure of your account? Are you looking for possible solutions? Follow this thread to be guided.

I am having a negative balance in my savings account due to non maintenance charges. The statement is showing zero balance but when I asked the bank staff to close my account they are asking me to remit the money for the non maintenance charges. I had also filed a complaint online with the RBI but have not received any reply. So what should I or is there something I can do to avoid the payment?

  • I have also a similar experience.
I opened a new savings bank account with the bank where I had dealings. I had remitted the minimum amount needed then. We were expecting a lumpsum amount to come to the account as one of our investments was matured.
But in the meantime, the bank debited some amount for sms charges. Actually there were no sms messages as the account wa just opened an no further transactions. This was towards the end of the month. The balance thus came down below the prescribed minimum. Then the bank debited charges for not maintaining minimum balance within a day of this. Thus my initial money almost got eroded. Much agitated, I visited the bank . The staff said hey did not have any control in this as they are all auto debits by the 'system'. Immediately I asked to withdraw the sms facility; and put money covering the next expected charges also. I use the internet banking facility and manage the account by that.

In this case what you can do is visit the bank, ascertain what all charges you can avoid by withdrawing such facilities. In case you can do without such additional facilities give in writing to discontinue such chargeable facilities. Ask them to calculate what charges can come at the end of the month or quarte due to the negative balance, add that and deposit such sufficient . Then monitor your account tan manage the minimum balance.

  • When we open an SB account in a bank we will accept that we will maintain the minimum balance required as per the bank rules. If we are not maintaining that amount they will deduct the penalty as per their system. These days all banks are painting computerised accounts and these deductions will be automatic. Even RBI also can't say anything as it is a condition agreed by us when we were opening the account.
You can go to the bank and talk to the manager and then deposit the amount so that you will get the minimum balance and then give your application for closing down your account. Otherwise, the bank will never entertain your request to close the account. As you delay the issue, you may have to pay the interest also for the amount you have to pay to the bank.
Otherwise, ignore the account and forget about that. But banks may not keep silent. They may be sending you the letters.
Pay a visit to the bank, discuss with the officials there and take necessary action.

  • The bank charges sometimes remain hidden and even the customers are not aware of such hidden charges unless they talk to the managers of the banks. Sometimes, the customers feel helpless with the interactions of the bank managers since they could twist the facts telling that they are helpless in respect of deductions made on account of zero balance. The system itself deducts the penalties.
You might have seen advertisements of Axis Banks, Kotak Mahindra Banks and others displaying aggressive advertisements for opening up a bank account with the zero balance and the gullible customers are entrapped later.
What I suggest to the customers that they should make themselves updated with the latest rules of saving bank accounts including the hidden charges if any for the operation of the accounts prior to opening savings accounts.
