  • Switching from regular course to admission to IGNOU distance education program

Want to switch from your regular BCA course to an IGNOU distance education one? Find out from experts if this switch is feasible and advisable.

Due to a midway life crisis, I want to switch my regular college course to IGNOU (Open University) as they provide distance education courses as it is almost impossible to take classes regularly. Now I need to balance my life and career so I want to switch my college to the very same course in BCA. Is this possible? I am in the second year of the third-year course.

  • Regular courses from one university will be entirely different from distance education through IGNOU. So we can not mix them up.
Now if you want to join to distance mode course in IGNOU, you have to apply for admission as per the procedure mentioned on their website and join in the first year of the course and all the three years you have to complete. There is no exemption for studying the first year there. There is no scope for admission to 2nd year directly.
But as you have already studied the first year there, clearing first-year subjects in IGNOU may become easy if the syllabus is having many common subjects.
As already you have completed the first year and a part of the second, just think about whether you can manage the remaining one and half years by attending the college for the minimum possible days so that you can get your degree much early and chance of settling early will be there.

  • Before switching to IGNOU from your regular course of BCA from a recognised university, you need to consider the pros and cons of the dual courses before your final selection. In your case, you are not comfortable with the current course because this made your life hectic not providing you a right balance of your life with the sustenance of your studies and career.
Prior to switching over your decision from the present situation to the next course of action related to your studies, go through the my observation considering the different facts as listed below-
    1) Almost one and half year you have devoted to the current course and in that way any decision taken for the change of the course at this juncture would mean the wastage of your past time devoted to pursuance of the said course. This loss is a colossal loss as far as I think.
    2) Prediction of your future in the changing scenario might provide you relief to some extent thinking that you can make better use of your current timings but who knows how the situation would change in future upsetting your current decision.
    3) What I think, it could be better on your part to talk your boss regarding the changing of your time to match your continuity with the attending your regular classes so that the course is completed without any breach.
    4) Though IGNOU provides quality education in the different courses including BCA course for which you have your mind and the same is recognised both from UGC and the employer's side, you have to start the course afresh. It would mean you need to devote to three more years as a result of your changed decisions.
    5) Money-wise also, it is not appearing a prudent planning, since admission fees and other charges for the pursuance of course could prove to be costly.
    6) Regular courses are always better than the distance courses if pursued from a recognised university.

  • If due to personal reasons you are not able to pursue the present regular BCA course then you have limited choice in the matter. The only way is to drop out from the existing course and then enroll for a correspondence or online course like one offered by IGNOU. If you take such a decision then it means that you will be losing the time that you have incurred so far in the present course and also lose the amount of fee that you have paid.
So before going for such an extreme step find out whether there is some facility of evening classess or coaching classess in the present institution for the students who are having problems like you are facing. If not then only you have to switch to other institution where online facility is there. It is obvious that you will have to start afresh and spend the full time of the course and pass out successfully only after which you would be awarded an online course degree.
So, ultimately it is a matter of losing a few years of one's prime time when career making becomes a primary concern.
So take a decision considering all these points.

    Knowledge is power.

  • It would not be a prudent decision to change your course from regular mode to distance mode. Before joining a course in distance mode you should think about all pros and cons of online courses. As mentioned above, you have almost spent one and a half years completing this regular course. If you join the course in IGNOU then you will have to start fresh because there is no rule to take admission in middle. As a result, you will lose time as well as money because you must have paid the admission fee. So, As per my suggestion, if you can manage regular classes for the remaining time then It would be nice for you. And If you can't manage between studies and life then you can join a distance course. But, always keep in mind that regular course has more importance than distance courses. At the time of job interviews, regular course candidates have more chances to be settled compared to distance courses.
