Wondering how a person who holds a Bachelor degree can be a professor as well? Learn from our experts here.

I want to know how come our new President of India was a professor before becoming our head of state. As you all know that her name is Droupadi Murmu. She just holds a Bachelor degree. Someone told me that you need to have a Master Degree at the minimum to be a professor. So, how did Murmu become a professor?

  • As per UGC norms, a graduate can't even become a lecturer. These days even lecturers are also called Assistant Professors. So if any person wants to become a lecturer he should have a minimum Master's degree in the subject. But these days there are many private institutions where the management appoints even bachelor's degree holders as Assistant Professors.
Our present President joined politics in 1997. She is a graduate only. She worked as an Assistant Professor in a private educational institution called Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre, Rajgangpur. She worked as a Junior Assistant in Irrigation Department. After that, she resigned from her government job to look after her children.
In private institutions, they can appoint anybody irrespective of their qualification and experience. I know many Engineering graduates working as Assistant Professors in private Engineering colleges.

  • No, it is not possible unless you complete the post graduation degree in a any subject preferably with the minimum 60 percent marks and there are two routs for achieving the post of lectureship. Either you qualify UGC NET which is held twice a year subject to the condition that you have achieved the threshold marks in your post graduation( preferably exceeding 60 % marks) They would short list the candidates depending upon performance in the said test apart from the oral interview of the selection committee.
The other rout would be to complete Ph.D degree with a recognised university for which you should have 60 % marks in your aggregate in the qualifying examination. For the selection of candidates, there will be a written test followed by interviews of the selection committee for your ultimate selection for the doctorate programme.
Based upon your performance in both doctorate degree followed by post graduation, you would be selected for the post of lecturer-ship.
Now talking about our present president, she is mere a graduate but she was offered the post of lecturer-ship in a private institution known as Aurobindo Education and Research Centre located at Rajgangpur as a capacity of Assistant Professor.
We need not go by her appointment since it is a private institution and they might assign the aspirants such coveted posts.
However, in private Engineering Colleges, BE candidates are offered the post of assistant lectureship initially but they would be required to complete ME followed by doctorate at the later stage for their permanent careers in the teaching.

  • At least a master's degree is necessary to become eligible to apply for the post of assistant professor. UGC norms are updated and it is no longer the same as it was during the 1970s. So, if you want to be a professor you have to earn at least a master's degree.

  • A Master's degree with a minimum of 60% marks is an essential requirement for being an assistant professor in govt college. So you can't be an assistant professor with a bachelor's degree in govt college. But, in some private colleges, you can apply. For being an assistant professor there are two ways which you have to cover. First, you can apply to UGC- NET which is conducted twice every year. After qualifying in this exam you can apply to govt college where they will recruit based on written interviews. Some University recruit candidates on an interview basis only. Another way is, you can apply for a doctorate. After getting Phd degree you are eligible to assistant professor in govt college. But before applying you must go through the University website. UG C always change its criteria for assistant professor. So, you must visit UGC rules and regulations for being an assistant professor in a government college.

  • Becoming a professor means one has to teach to the UG classes. So, just passing out with a bachelor degree is not enough for teaching the UG students. A master's degree is required. In some private colleges sometimes the management recruits even a graduate for teaching to the UG classes though generally they would recruit PG qualified candidates only. The case of our honourable President falls in that category and corresponds to that type of situation.
Presently one has to qualify the NET test also in order to apply for professor position or do PhD in the respective subject.

    Knowledge is power.

  • Professors teach UG students; hence, a bachelor's degree is not enough to teach UG students and become college professors. It is ideal to complete a two-year master's degree after passing out the bachelor's degree. Also, teaching experience for several years is mandatory to become a professor. If all these criteria are met, the candidate should appear in the eligibility test like NET or SET to be selected as a professor.

As per University Grants Commission (UGC), one should have completed a Ph.D. or M. Phil. degree to become a collage level professor. One should have the motivation to learn actively and continuously to become a professor. Their academic background should also be good and stronger in a specific field. The education and academic records should reflect their active contribution and innovative research in their area of pursued field.
