  • A normal eye will read without the use of spectacles as well as easily see the things at a far distance without using it either. This is the ideal situation. Due to some defect in the eye some people are not able to see far but are able to read easily. This condition is known as myopia. In such cases short sight of the person is alright but the long sight is not working properly. On the other hand some people have such a defect in the eye that they are not able to read but are able to see the things in the distance. This condition is known as hypermetropia.
A person suffering from hypermetropia is advised by the eye doctor for reading glasses and the power of reading glass is ascertained after detailed eye test. Doctor will give a report on eye test
Once the eye test is over the person has to go to optical or spectacle shop and get the reading spectacle made. These shops are there everywhere in small towns as well as big cities and one can buy the spectacle as per one's budget. The cheapest ones are available for about Rs 200 to 500 range. Costlier ones will be having price tag in thousands of rupees. If you choose glass lenses then they will be cheaper than the light weight plastic lenses.
Those who can read well but cannot see far are advised to wear other types of glass which can be thought as opposite to the reading glass. Reading glass power is in positive while far seeing glass power is in negative. Scientifically speaking reading glass are convex lenses while far seeing glasses are concave lenses.
Some people have both types of defects in their eyes and they are asked to wear two types of specs as per the need or can go for a double lense within the same frame and that is called progressive lense.

    Knowledge is power.

  • After our birth we are 'ageing' everyday. So when we reach the so-called middle ages or sometimes even at middle thirties we feel some blurring or doubling or discomfort to read newspapers or similar prints and writings. Initially we feel comfortable to read if we keep the paper or book at a distance than the usual distance we used to hold. At the same time w may not feel any problem in looking at distant objects.

If we consult a doctor at this time, he may say that you need a reading glass. It means that we need spectacles for reading purpose. In the olden days they used to use a magnifying glass for this purpose. We may see such pictures and cartoons in the archives . Hence the name reading glass.

But in modern days for convenience we are prescribed 'bi focal'. That is a spectacle with the ',lens' at the lower position almost corresponding to our eye and vision line which functions as drooping vision line.. This functions reading glass. Th upper part of the spectacle glass will be mostly plain glass. This is convenient for both clos reading and also for long distance viewing. It does not necessitate removing or putting glass every time for long and clos sights.

By and by the vision power changes for both upper and lower visions. Hence slowly a person may need bifocals with different 'power' at the upper and lower parts.

Though in early days people wee just buying reading glasses (specs for reading only) just from the market, now a days people are more careful and consult an eye doctor and get specs prescribed after suitable clinical testing.
Non-prescribed reading glasses are easily available an are cheap. Thy are available in light plastics.

Sometimes w need to war glasses just for protecting eyes from dust and sunlight heat. In this regard, if w do not have any vision discomfort, we can buy plain glass for dust protection and dark glass or sunglass or (cooling glass in layman language)for protection from sunlight heat. These are available in opticals for straight buying . But it is better to buy suitable ones under doctor's advice.

In scientific speak, reading glasses come under convex lens, and varying in focal length or power. Nowadays 'progressive' lens are ore comfortable, but costlier than glass lens or plastic lens.

  • It is better to get reading glasses directly from shop or online, you can chek up your eye with the local eye doctor and get prescribed with correct version of glasses which will never harm you.

  • I hope less understands the question above. I am not asking about the reading glass detail, but, what is the opposite to Reading Glass (specs) name that generally many uses it? How it works (it is known that using it by far sighted people)? And where to buy it (opposite to Reading specs) as same as reading glass purchases?

  • The question is about the lenses that are available for seeing the articles that are there at a long distance or reading letters that are present at a long distance.
Generally, our eyes can see letters and objects that are available at a particular distance. This distance depends on the size of the letter and the efficiency of the eye. It is a fact known to all of us that as we age, our capacity for vision will come down.
There are two types of problems with eyesight. These two are refractive errors.
    1. Long-Sightedness: In this case the person can't see the objects or letters that are near. The persons having this problem can't read the book when it is near to him. They may have to keep it a particular distance based on their sight and read. Such persons will be given glasses so that they can read the books. The glasses that are used are being referred as Reading glasses by the author.
    2. 2. Short-sightedness: In this problem, the person can't see distant objects and letters. This is the problem what I understand the author is talking.
For both the above problems there are some solutions. The person has to go to the eye specialist doctor. Then he will inspect the vision and test it with proper equipment and then decided what is the level of sight problem he is having. Then he will recommend the probable treatment.
Presently, the following are the wats available for solving the problem. Your doctor will suggest you the best way.
    1. Glasses: The doctor will check and tell whether you have long sight or short sight. Then he will suggest glasses for the problem you are having. The prescription he has given is to taken to a eye glass supplier and he will prepare the glass as per the requirement and give you. You can show the same to your doctor and once he approves, you can start using them. Opposite to reading glasses also glasses only. The opthomologist will prepare the glasses as required and give you.
    2. Contact lenses: Some people may not show interest in wearing glasses. So they can go for contact lenses. But here the contact lenses will be in contact with our eyes. There are chances of getting infected if lenases are not used properly.
    3. Laser treatment: In this case no glasses or lenses are required. The corena in your eye will be reshaped using laser technology.
    4. Intraocular lens: Laser treatment may not be suggested for all people. If laser treatment is not suitable to a person the doctor may suggest these lenses.
5 Refractive lens exchange: These are synthetic lenses. These will be used for focusing on both short sight and long sight. These lenses are generally referred as progressive lenses. The persons wearing this can focus on both nearby objects as well as objects that are at a distance.
The eyesight will be changing and the person should go for checking as and when required or at least once in two years and get the vision tested and correct the lenses used.

  • Normal eyesight can see objects easily at far places as well as near places. But, when a defect starts in the eye then we need glasses. Generally, we need reading glasses after crossing the age of forties. There are four types of eye defects for which we need different glasses are as follows:-
    1. Short-sightedness or myopia- This is an eye defect in which far objects appear blurred but near objects are seen clearly. The image is focused in front of the retina rather than on it usually because the eyeball is too long or the refractive power of the eye's lens is too strong. This error can be corrected by wearing glasses/contacts that have concave lenses.
    2. Hyperopia or longsightedness- This is an eye defect of vision in which there is difficulty with near vision but far objects can be seen easily. The image is focused behind the retina rather than upon it. This occurs when the eyeball is too short or the refractive power of the lens is too weak. Hyperopia can be corrected by wearing glasses/contacts that contain convex lenses.
    3. Presbyopia- Generally, It starts after the age of 40s. And we may suffer from this eye defect at this age. At this age, our ability to see things close-up gets worse and we may need to wear reading glasses. This eye defect can be corrected by bifocal lenses. Nowadays, the doctor prescribes progressive lens which looks plain from the outside.
    4. Astigmatism: This is also one of the eye defects in which when the light rays do not all come to a single focal point on the retina, instead some focus on the retina and some focus in front of or behind it. This is usually caused by a non-uniform curvature of the Astigmatism can usually be corrected by using a special spherical cylindrical lens and this is placed in the out-of-focus axis.
You can buy from any optical shop or can be purchased online also.

  • Normally visions remain healthy in our childhood in majority of cases except a few exceptions for some babies suffering from eye defects and they would be required to have consultations depending upon the severity of their cases. Normal eye sight can identify the objects easily both from far places and near places without producing strain on the eye nerves.
The best way to identify the defects is to consult an eye specialist for any type of disorder with which we might be suffering from. Broadly speaking we might have one type of disorder out of four listed below-
    1) Myopia- This is referred to shortsightedness where the object could be seen as blurred while focusing on the object at the prescribed distance of reading examined by the ophthalmologist but otherwise it is distinct in the near distance. This type of error can be corrected through the prescription of the right lenses for each patient. We need to have contact lenses in this situation.
    2) Hyperopia- In this case, we would have difficulties in reading or locating the objects situated very near to us. However, the object can be distinct and clear if viewed from the far places. Here the image formation occurs behind the retina instead of getting focused on the retina To remedy this, we need convex lenses having suitable focal length.
    3) Presbiopia - With the advancement of age, our vision loose elasticity and as such the near vision gets affected so as to have distinct and clear image of the letters to be read and as such we need bifocals to correct this remedy. Exact diopter is to be decided by the ophthalmologist in such cases.
    4) Astigmatism- It is a disorder signifying the imperfections of our eye cornea or lens with astigmatism when the eyes behave like like eggs or oval shaped appearing like footballs.
There are two types of astigmatism as indicated below-
    1) Horizontal Astigmatism- In this case, when eyes become wider than it becomes taller.
    2) Vertical Astigmatism- In this situation, when the eyes are taller than they are wide.
In both the cases, near and far vision become blurry due to irregularities of the eye - shape.
There are three ways of treating astigmatism such as glasses, contacts or refractive surgery.
    1) Glasses - Glasses contain cylindrical lenses which would take care of the uneven curves of the cornea or lens. It could suit to the patients having severe astigmatism.
    2) Contacts - Contacts can also offer corrections provided they rest perfectly in our eyes. There are different types of lenses to correct astigmatism such as soft lenses, gas permeable contact lenses and hybrid lenses.
    3) Refractive Surgery- In this case, lasic surgery is taken up to correct the refractive errors with the application of tiny pulse of light so as to create a flap. Then excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea to smoothen out the distortion to eliminate the refractive error.
