  • Looking for a career change from electrical field after 10 years

Keen to switch from a career in the electrical field to another one? Check out the advice given here on whether software or any other field would help you get a job with higher pay.

I have 10 years of experience in the electric field in different segments. Now I am looking to change my career, the main reason is due to a less salary package in the electric domain. Can you guide me on whether this is the right decision? I am planning to shift to the software field, so is it possible? Can you suggest any courses for me? Or is there any other field of choice for a better salary? How much salary package I can expect in these new fields?

  • What is the necessity of seeking career change even after having a good volume of 10 years experience. If you are going to a new company, even though possessing previous experience of ten years, you will be considered there as a new employee and any promotional possibilities there, it will be given to you only after your seniors in that concern. But if you are sticking in this concern you will be considered as senior eligible for promotion etc., Salary, though a material aspect, we should see the same behind the consideration, status, job security.

  • 10 years of experience is a long experience. Now if you want to change the field to IT field, it may not be very encouraging. No good company will take a person from a different domain to their domain. Some medium and small companies may consider but the salaries will not be very high and you may have to start there as a fresh candidate with a small salary.
My sincere suggestion is don't leave the present job until you get a new offer. Many good institutions offer MBA or PG diplomas in Business Management, etc. online mode or in distance education mode. Select a good institution.IIMs also offer these courses for employed persons. Get into a such course and once you complete that degree, you will have many chances to shift from the technical side to the management side in the same domain. An engineering graduate with 10 years of experience and with an MBA will have plenty of chances either in the manufacturing sector or the service sector.
There are companies offering good salaries to experienced professionals with MBA or PGDBA qualifications and offering them senior positions in their establishments.
Don't think of switching over to the IT sector but think along the lines I have suggested to you above.

  • Though your idea for shifting the present job is not bad but you must keep this thing in your mind that this could not prove to be smooth journey especially when you are opting for IT field. The following points might be worthwhile prior to switching over to IT field-
    1) If you have the opportunity to look around any executive working in IT field, talk to him how is managing his job pressure. If he is a senior manager having an experience of over ten years, he remains under overstressed to put his best efforts in his project. This pressure produce over fatigue. Pay wise they might be better. But working beyond 12 hours costs heavy in terms of their physical and mental health.
    2) Now consider your case. You have rendered your job in the Electrical Field for over ten years and now seek a job change in IT. Please note that IT employers think pros and cons before they give you offer in the IT domains since you don't have any exposure in this area. You might be placed in the junior scale if you are selected luckily and to reach a higher scale in terms of emoluments and position, you will have to struggle hard.
Considering the two points as stated above, I would suggest you to go in for the degree in the management side. While continuing your present assignment, join a distance education course in the management of your choice such as finance, IT or personal management. Ensure that the course being pursued by you is from a recognised institution such as IGNOU, Manipal Distance Education, Karnataka University Distance Education etc to have your edge in the job market.
If you could exert influence to any management employer with your strong communication skills, you are sure to get a lucrative job in the management side.
