  • Which degree program to join after dropping out from college

Dropped out of college some years ago, and keen to complete a degree program in India within two years? Check out the expert advice given through the responses here.

I am a college dropper for the last 8 years. In the current condition, without any degree, one cannot join any company for a higher position. So please suggest to me which degree I will complete in 2 years.

  • A degree program in India is generally a three-year one. Two-year programs are offered only as a diploma or a certificate course. A two-year degree program would depend on your earlier academic record, that is, if you have any college credits from before you dropped out of college. It also depends on the norms of UGC and the university with which the college is affiliated. These norms will need to be adhered to for pursuing a shorter-duration degree program, including what is known as an accelerated degree program. Note also that some employers do insist on a three-year degree program being successfully completed after Class 12, and not a two-year one. I have seen recruitment advertisements making this an essential criterion.

You do have the option of pursuing an online course that could get you a degree within two years, but this has a major drawback. You will find it difficult to get a job as most employers, including educational institutions, may not accept any degree obtained through online mode.

I would advise you to complete your college education properly through a valid three-year program if it is a Degree that you are seeking. Diplomas, of course, are acceptable, too, by some employers, but not by all.

It is suggested that you share more information, namely, up to which Class you studied (have you completed Class 12?), the stream in which you studied (Arts/Science/Commerce), and which field you are interested in completing your college studies. Perhaps you can pursue a 3-year vocational degree program also. Then, once you give the details, accordingly, further guidance can be given. Specific colleges/universities can also be suggested if you let us know in which city/State you are based.

Do not give up on trying to complete your education. Stick to your goal.

  • Here, You did not mention your education. you should have explained to which class you have studied. In which stream you have completed your education? And what is your Interest area? This kind of information will help us in suggesting your future education. If you have completed your study up to class 12th then my suggestion would be first complete your degree because the degree is the minimum requirement for applying in any field. Another option is you can do some vocational courses for job purposes. Besides, a two-year diploma or certificate course is available for job opportunities. In your case, more suggestion is not possible because you did not give full details related to your academic field.

  • Its 80% valid that without any graduation, most of the organizations will not accept our application. But still, there are organization's still look out our experience even if we don't have any degree. Here, you mentioned that you dropped about 8 years ago and no information about which degree you were pursing and what is your current situation like you are working or doing business or any other information. So, on assumptions lots of information can be shared but with your exact situation, expert advice would be very useful.
At the same time, you can opt for distance education without affecting your current employment. Most of the distance education courses are three years and some of them can be joined on direct second year so that you can complete your graduation in two years subject to your previous education information. So, try with the education institutions who can offer graduation in two years and as per your interest or as per your job role which you are currently working or desire to work on in the future. All the very best to complete your graduation and for your life.

  • From your own submission, I could not come to any conclusion regarding your degree, you were pursuing. According to the latest trend and also accepted by UGC, the degree programme irrespective of stream such as Arts, Science or Commerce, has to be studied three years to cover the full course of the degree of a regular University. In case of distance course having UGC approval and are recognised for imparting education, they can offer education to the aspirants who are not able to undertake regular courses due to their time constraints. For such aspirants they can pursue distance course comprising of three years according to their convenience of times through the distance mode such IGNOU, Kota Open University, Distance Education of Manipal etc through the guidance of the institutions.
Graduation degree plays a vital role since this opens up your avenues for lot of jobs such as in Banks as Probationary Officers, Management Trainees of Public Undertakings, appearing for UPSC and a lot of other jobs apart from your pursuing post graduation degree.
Hence, you need to stick to the prevalent norm of the courses of studies of the graduation which could be three year duration of regular classes from a college recognised from the university or a distance once having been recognised through UGC. Other than this, there is no alternative option to acquire a degree course of any stream.

  • Selecting the course and subject, after school final or college drop out, should be based on the aspiring student's interest only and should never be based on others suggestion/force. Many are joining in courses by seeing the marketability and popularity at the time of their joining. This is entirely not correct and good as there are more chances of facing disappointment or frustration when the situation of market turns off.
During our college time there was a heavy demand for BCom as many of us aspired the course with dream of of Bank job. But when we came out after graduated, only five to seven got bank job from our class strength of 98 persons. We were not tired of that, of course, but present youngsters are having such guts but got disappointed of staying unemployed till an opportunity comes.

  • You discontinued your college 8 years back. Now you want to continue your education.
As you discontinued your degree 8 years back and now there is a change in the regulations and rules in the colleges, you can't continue where you have stopped. You have to join your degree course as a fresh candidate only, Normally the degree programme is for 3 years. There are some accelerated degree programmes online also. But that all depends on the subjects you want to choose and the course you want to select. These details are missing from your posting. Many accelerated graduate programs ask for a minimum GPA at the undergraduate level to apply. The eligibility criteria for these programs are also different from those of regular courses. So you should spend a minimum of 3 years to get the degree. Otherwise, you can go for a diploma program that can be completed in 2 years.
I suggest you pursue a 3-year degree course in regular mode. That will be helpful for you in pursuing your career goals. Based on the subjects you studied at the +2 level and based on your interest you can select a suitable stream and try hard to score a better mark. Based on your time availability, you can also try certification courses online that will add value to your candidature to get a good job. I wish you all the best.

  • Regarding the fact that you are a college dropout eight years ago this break is pretty much long. At present UGC norms have changed a lot regarding completion of graduation. You need to complete your course with minimum of three and maximum of six years.

It is appreciable that you would like to resume your UG program to upgrade from employment perspective. But none of the course can be completed in two years unless the university you studied permits you. You can verify with the concerned college/university. It is more challenging, which involves lots of taboos during this process. If so you need to provide a "Gap Certificate" or an affidavit mentioning the reason for your break in studies. Or else completion of three-year degree program through open university is appropriate continuing current employment as well. You may go in for online PG as per your interest also. Many universities offer online PG courses for working professionals.

A gap certificate has been issued for the students who dropped out from their regular stream of academics owing to various reasons such as health issues, necessity to shift to employment for financial support, etc. You need to mention appropriate reason for your long gap in this affidavit to the concerned college/university.

Stay focused on achieving your goal of continuing higher education and wishing you all the best.

  • You are a dropper and for 8 years you are not in touch with studies. So though it is not impossible you will have to work hard and go for an appropriate degree course and focus on your studies.
Normally a degree course will be for a 3 years duration and you have to be mentally prepared for that.
Now the crucial question is which course you will go for. There are many streams like science, arts, commerce, management, and computer science. You have to choose one based on two factors - your interest and job opportunity.
Your interest and liking are of importance because without them you will not be able to complete your course. You must ponder why earlier you did not continue your course and dropped out. The same situation should not repeat now.
There are some streams where job opportunities will be better and it makes sense to go for that.
If you keep the above two aspects in mind then going on will be convenient.
