  • Does UPSC accept gazette notification of surname change?

Planning to apply for UPSC but unsure about the personal details to enter due to a change in the surname? Get quick advice on what would be the correct procedure for entering personal details.

I have deleted my surname through a Gazette notification. I also got my Aadhaar card and PAN Card with a new name. However, there is no way to change my surname in any educational certificate. I will apply for UPSC as per the Adhaar card. Should I mention the surname along with my parents name or not? Is it necessary or not?

  • Gazette notification for change in the name or surname is acceptable for all UPSC needs. In this regard, UPSC has given a notification. The notification states that the candidate should carry e-Admit Card, Government issued Photo IdentityCard and original Gazette Notification of the changed name for the examination for all the Sessions. The name in the Gazette Notification should match the name mentioned on the Government-issued Photo Identity Card. If asked for the candidate may have to submit an undertaking at the time of the Examination or interview or during certificate verification.
You have a gazette notification with you and also you have PAN and Aadhaar cards which are showing the name mentioned in the gazette notification. So there will not be any problem.
But when you are mentioning your parents' names you should include their surname as per their photo identity cards issued by the government.

  • Since you have taken up your steps to delete your surname through the Gazette Notification and accordingly your Aadhar and PAN Card show absence of your surname.
Taking such a step from end is not likely to cause any problem since it is supported by the Gazette Notification. While changing the surname of your academic certificate at this juncture could be a time consuming process and also not required.
Your parents name should not be disturbed in relation to their surnames and in no way, it is likely to create any hurdle on the ongoing verification process.

  • The purpose of gazette notification for change in name is simply to make it officially announced and make it presentable to the authorities wherever and whenever it is required.
After the date of gazette notification your name is changed as stipulated in that notification and now you have to use the same name everywhere wherever you apply or undertake any such activity of sharing your name.
For all practical purposes please forget your earlier name and stick to the new name and mention only it everywhere whenever you deal with an application or appointment or physical verification.
Keep the documents ready with you for showing at any such opportunity.
All your personal credentials and documents before the date of gazette notification will be seen in the light of this gazette notification so it is obvious that this document is very important and is to be preserved carefully and to be presented wherever it is asked.

  • If you want to change your name or surname through Gazette notification then it is accepted in UPSC. According to the notification, the candidate should carry e-Admit Card, Government issued Photo Identity Card, and an original Gazette Notification of the changed name for the examination. You should be careful regarding the name mentioned in the Gazette Notification and government-issued Photo Identity Card. That means the name should be the same in both places. They may ask for the undertaking at the time of certificate verification.
You should have a gazette notification as well as your PAN card and Aadhaar card showing the name mentioned in the gazette notification. Then there would not be a problem. While mentioning your parents' names you should include their surnames as per their photo identity cards issued by the government.

  • Hello Ranjith Kumar,

    Greetings for the day.

If your surname has been legally changed through a Gazette notification and you have updated your Aadhaar card and PAN card with the new name, then you can use the new name while applying for the UPSC exam. However, since your educational certificates still have your old surname, you may want to clarify the situation by mentioning your previous surname along with your parents' names. This will help to avoid any confusion during the application process.

It is important to note that UPSC requires all applicants to provide accurate and complete information on their application form. If you have legally changed your name, it is important to update all relevant documents to reflect the change. They may ask for the undertaking at the time of certificate verification. In case of any discrepancies, you may be asked to provide additional documents or clarification, which could delay the application process but not your appointment. So please don't worry.
