  • It is great that you have chosen a noble career as a doctor. First and foremost, I wish you achieve your goal of becoming a qualified healthcare professional.

To study MBBS in India, you must write the qualifying examination, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test conducted every year by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The MBBS seats have been allotted in all medical colleges, irrespective of government, private or autonomous institutes such as JIPMER, PGIMER, AIIMS, all over India through this NTA. NEET is mandatory even to study MBBS abroad so that you can pursue PG or practice in India after completion of UG medicine in countries like Russia, Ukraine, etc.

You are required to complete 17 years of age and above and no limits on NEET attempts. You must complete classes 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as core subjects, and minimum 50% marks for the general category, and 40% for the reserved category. Foreign nationals/NRIs/ PIO, have been also eligible to take up the NEET. The official website for NEET is www.neet.nta.nic.in

In India, studying MBBS has been expensive at present unless the aspirant gets a good ranking in the NEET to avail seat in the topmost government/government-aided medical colleges. As for as the private colleges/deemed universities are concerned, 50% of the seats in those colleges must be allotted for NEET candidates, equal to the fee structure of government colleges in the respective region/States/Union Territories according to the NMC norms. So fees vary depending upon the rank you have scored, and your college choice to be government or private. Undoubtedly, private colleges do charge exorbitant fees including hostel fees and other expenses in lakhs. You can search on the internet about MBBS fee structures prevailing in various colleges in different States, Union Territories. and private medical colleges.

For your first question regarding how to study to score a good rank, confidence, understanding the concept, practice, and dedication is essential. To crack a good score in the NEET 2023, you must be attached to any coaching center conducting unlimited mock tests with numerous study modules and previous test papers. Immense practice alone would get you a good score and a seat in top colleges. The exam is to be conducted on 7th May 2023 and you hardly have two-and-half months' time to prepare for the exam.

  • It is heartening to note that you want to make a career in the medical line. In such a condition, your starting point should be to have a MBBS degree through a recognised medical college. This could be a government college or a private one. The striking difference between the two is that the government college could be affordable to you in terms of fee structure and other improved facilities for libraries and better guidance of the professors owing to their enriched experience and expertise apart from providing better inputs in course of examining the patients or otherwise. In the private medical colleges, fees could be beyond the reach of the students belonging to middle class families.
The only option to sustain your studies in MBBS needs your impressive scores in the NEET arranged by NTA and the same condition holds good for both the government and private medical colleges.
Eligibility for appearing for NEET is as follows-
    1) The aspirants must secure at least 50% marks in their 10+2 examination of any recognised board such as CBSE, Sr. Cambridge or any recognised state boards of India. For other categories, such as for the reserved categories, minimum marks have been prescribed 40%.
    2) The minimum age of the aspirants should be 17 years in the year, they are to write the NEET.
Depending upon their performance in the NEET, the candidates would be accommodated seats for the medical entrance.
Relating to your queries raised from your end, my answers are in the sequence wise as indicated below-
    1) You have to gear up your studies in such as way that the fundamentals of Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology is clear to you if you follow NCERT books or other text books of any recognised board. This should be your starting point. Relating to any doubt, take the help of the subject teacher. The second part is to get yourself enrolled in a distinguished coaching institution for better guidance in terms of coaching, appearing mock tests conducted by the institute on regular basis and attempting the questions of last seven years of the medical tests for the familiarity of patterns. Equal emphasis is to be attached to all the portions/ sections of such papers.
    2) Eligibility condition for admission to MBBS course has been indicated as above in the beginning.
    3) Fee structure of private medical college would vary depending upon of the choice of the college and their scorings in the NEET. The following are the fee structure of some of the private medical colleges-
    1) Hamdard Institute of Medical Science, Delhi - 12,0000/-
    2) Gitam Institute of Medical Science, Visakhapatnam- 20, 75, 000/-
    3) MM Institute of Medical Science- 15,0000/-
    4) BM Patil Medical College, Bengaluru- 17,0000/-
    5) KS Medical College Mangalore- 15,35,000/-
Fees are to be paid yearly wise. Fees are variable according to rapport of such private medical colleges.

  • For appearing in NEET exam one has to have Biology as a subject in class XI and XII and one should have 50% marks (40% for SC/ST) in class XII final exam. Depending on the result of neet examination a student is allotted a medical college based on the student's preference and his score in NEET. As the MBBS course fee in government medical colleges is much less than that of private colleges, the students having very good score will be allotted seats in those Government colleges and others may not get seat there and will have to go to private medical colleges. So all this is finalised during the counselling and document verification sessions. It is obvious that everything depends on the score obtained in NEET.
Seeing the vast difference in MBBS fee between Govt and private colleges, Govt has made it mandatory for private medical colleges to offer 50% of seats on the same rates as that of the Govt colleges. This is at least providing some relief to those meritorious students who cannnot afford to pay high fees.
The annual MBBS course fee in private medical colleges varies from Rs 211000 to Rs 2250000.
