  • How do I become a flight steward when I am 35-36 years old?

Keen to take up a career as a flight steward in India but age is a barrier? Find out if you can join a foreign carrier where age won't be an issue, and, if so, what is the procedure.

I'm a 35-year-old male who wishes to join the cabin crew, with no prior work experience. I heard that it is not possible in India after you cross 35. So, I'm thinking of joining foreign airlines. I have heard that in the UK, USA, and other western countries, they do not have an age limit. However, the problem is that I'm an Indian. I wanted to know whether I can join foreign airlines, and I also wanted to know how to join them. Being a flight attendant is my desire. Can you help me out?

  • 1. Globally, the minimum age requirement for a flight steward is 18 -21 years. There is no maximum age limit specified. It may vary from airline to airline. So there may be some service providers who may consider you also.
    2. Airlines in the United States take U.S. citizens or people who have permanent resident status or people who have valid work visas.
    3. There are many airlines in the US and other countries. So if you want to join one such airline. Go to their website and search for the jobs they have. Check for the eligibility criteria and if you fulfil the same fill up the application online and attach your resume and apply for the post. If there is a vacancy and if the company likes your resume. they may start processing your application and call you for an interaction. After the interaction, if they select you, you have to undergo training and after successful completion, you will be offered the post.

    always confident

  • It all depends on the airline. A lot of airlines in middle east Asia have an age limit to become a flight stewards. Your age should be either 30 or 35. But in USA/Europe airlines don't have this kind of age limit. You can work there up to 50 or 60. So, as long as you are fit you can work there. Besides, For US Airlines you should have permanent status proof. Before joining a foreign airline I would suggest that you must go through the website. And check eligibility criteria as well as rules and regulations. As per instruction, you can apply there.

  • Generally, students after completing their high school or senior secondary go for this career line. Some diploma course on flight attendent or cabin crew responsibilities and functioning has to be done as it is required for applying for the position of flight attendent. There are some institutes which help the students in getting a job also.
Though there is no upper age limit mentioned for this job but the candidates in age group of 21-26 are preferred. In such a situation it would be difficult to make a career in that line at the age of 35 that too with no experience in the line.
Some of the short term certificate course in this line are as - Hostess Management, Air Hostess Training, Cabin Crew or Flight Attendant, Airlines Hospitality, Aviation Management and Hospitality, Flight Purser (certification), Aviation Customer Service (certification), Airlines Hospitality (certification), Hospitality and Air travel Management (certification), and Airline Passenger Service (certification).
Anyway, one can try to do some certificate or diploma course and then contact some job portals or agencies which claim that they can help the candidates in securing a flight attendent job overseas. It is imperative that visa and work permit will always be required when we go abroad for working.
Some of the institutes which impart these trainings and courses are - Universal Aviation Academy (UAA), PTC- Aviation Academy, Pacific Airways, Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training, Optima Air Hostess Academy, Livewell Academy, and Indira Gandhi Institute of Aeronautics (IGIA).

    Knowledge is power.

  • What the author has indicated that there is no age restriction in some of foreign airlines, he has rightly indicated of non adherence of age patterns for flight stewards.
Hence criteria in respect of age is variable from airlines to airlines. In case of Europe/ USA, there is no such age limit mentioned in their advertisements.
You need to check up the eligibility criteria of the different airlines and should ensure yourself that you fit their conditions.
There are many job portals in connection with absorption of flight stewards with the provision of their training and helping the aspirants to get right jobs in overseas. You might try one such an agency.

In general, airlines look for candidates who are at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and can communicate effectively in English.

Gain Relevant Experience: Airlines generally prefer candidates with prior customer service or hospitality experience. Consider taking courses or workshops in customer service or hospitality to strengthen your skills in these areas.

Meet Physical Requirements: Flight stewards must meet specific physical requirements, such as being able to stand for long periods, lift and carry heavy objects, and pass a medical examination. Make sure that you are physically fit and able to meet these requirements.

Complete Required Training: Airlines typically provide flight steward training to new hires. This training covers a variety of topics, including safety and emergency procedures, first aid, and customer service.
