Only 22 percent of Indians are now below poverty line::Orissa & Bihar Improve poor percent
The planning commission report came out on 23 July 2013 Tuesday, reporting that number of people below the poverty line (BPL) declined to 21.9% of the population in 2011-12, whereas the same was 29.8% in 2009-10 and 37.2% in 2004-05. This gives a reason to the Government to cheer up it seems.While considering the individual state, Orissa and Bihar shown a very good result as both of these two states show biggest drop in percentage of poor. In case of Orissa, the population of people below the poverty line or BPL came to 32.6% in 2011-12, in 2004-2005 it was 57.2%, thus a decline of 24.6 percentage.
In Bihar, the BPL share in total population was 33.7% in 2011-12, and the same was 54.4% in 2004-2005.
Though both the states performed very well in 2011-12, but the BPL level of Bihar and Orissa ar still above the national level.
Rajasthan has managed to do better with 14.7% BPL in 2011-12 compared 34.4% in 2004-05 and this is better than national average.
Whereas Narendra Modi's Gujarat has 16.6% people below the poverty line.
