UP Civic poll: BSP's performance is beyond expectation

Lat week, civic election was held in 16 municipal towns of Uttar Pradesh. Many election observers said that this would be the first major political test of Jogi Adityanath, the first-time Chief Minister of the state.

The election result of those 16 civic bodies came yesterday. Ms. Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party's performance has been noteworthy. Although its campaign was low-profile, it has come to second place in almost all places leaving behind Samajwadi Party and Congress in distant third place and fourth place, respectively. The party is showing signs of revival. The performances of other major parties i.e., BJP, SP and Congress, are on expected lines.

Incidentally, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has managed to win 14 mayoral posts out of these 16 municipal towns.

Yes UP civic polls did throw some surprises to which all the political parties must draw their attention. BSP had some reason to cheer as its candidate snatched the Aligarh mayoral seat, a traditional BJP stronghold. Like wise in Saharanpur too BJP candidate Madan Walia fended off the challenge from BSP rival Fazlurehman to win by 2,000 votes. But what surprised me and others that Congress and Samajwadi parties are no where a competition and if this trend continues, BJP should start worrying about BSP spanning out to its bastion and 2019 would be crucial as Lok Sabha elections would be held.

We should not forget that BSP was ruling party earlier. It has still its support base. Mayawati is also capable of keeping them hooked to the party. Unlike other parties, BSP is practically under the single command of Mayawati. As far as the leader is strong and party's finance is good, the loyalty by cadres and workers will be strong. Mayawati i can influence voters by her stirring speeches, projecting herself as the only saviour of the downtrodden ,to vote for her.Being a personality oriented party it is easier to keep the flock together and prevent dissension.

So the party will continue to have its influence and may be even recovering too.

Mr. Mohan: This election has almost no surprise. BSP is a distant second. SP and Congress have been decimated. Congress did understand the wind and even didn't fight in Amethi. The Congress supported independent candidates in Amethi have lost terribly. There has been no face-saver for SP and Congress. BSP has now become main opposition to BJP, but a very feeble opposition.
Beware! I question everything and everybody.

The results are on expected lines.BJP won majority seats. BSP won two in the second place. SP and Congress lost all the seats. The results are as expected only. Now the strongholds of Congress like Rai Bareli and Amethi are also not showing any liking towards Congress. All other municipalities and panchayats also showing a similar trend. This is the first election after Yogi became the CM there. He won all these seats very easily. It may be giving an indication that the people are still with BJP. Even the Gujarat elections may also reproduce similar results I hope.

This election and its results would be a welcome sigh of relief for the CM and the BJP. The tradition Congress bastions have switched sides and a revival of Congress looks difficult.BSP has managed a decent performance given its local history and ground support and is referred to as the silent winner in the media reports. The opposition parties, as usual, are accusing that the electronic voting machines are manipulated and want the regular ballot paper version to be used next time. Mr.Amit Shah has already expressed his confidence about Gujarat results by stating that UP results are nothing when compared to the Gujarat results. Let's wait and see.

But these results should not bring over confidence in BJP cadre as sulking Mayawati has started to perform and she can throw her hat in coming elections elsewhere in the country and that is the hard lesson BJP should have learned from this polls. And coming to Congress they must postpone anointing Rahul Gandhi as President of the Party as of now as he is causing more damage to the party than reviving it. Just cannot understand why the party is faring so badly in all elections and yet talking all non sense against the performing government. Let Rahul Gandhi go for long leave from politics.
