World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - 15th June

UN General Assembly in its Resolution 66/127 designated June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On this day the whole world is to raise its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations. It is for inviting global attention on the problem of physical, emotional and financial abuse of elders. The world is currently in a transformation stage in the demographic pattern. The global population of elders, above 60 years, will exceed the number of younger people. These changes are leading to a worldwide recognition of the problems and challenges that face the elderly group.Research has identified elderly abuse , neglect, violence and exploitation as the major issues facing senior citizens around the world.
A recent survey conducted by Hepage India, in 23 cities, revealed that the maximum amount of abuse take place in Mangaluru (47%) followed by Ahamedabad (46%), Bhopal (39%) and Amritsar (35%). Compared to the rest of the cities the abuse is lower in Kochi (15%). Abuse include disrespect, bearing, verbaverbal abuse, economic exploitation, unwelcome forcible sexual contact, neglect and others.

Already there is a thread raised by Mohan on the same subject today morning. This post will be an additional post and actually, Editors has to lock the thread. However, I congratulate all the elders on this day and I pray God to see that good sense will prevail upon on all the young people and they will take care of the elders in their house by providing not only financial help but also a moral support by holding their hand in their remaining period of life.

The author did gave some figures which highlights the plight of elders who are surely suffering with silence. The age factor, the fear factor and above all the security factor force them to be sober in spite of being abused. Hence an awareness day has been created so that at least the younger generation should know how to respect the elders. In stead of using the abundant talent visible in every elder, we tend to discard them for various reason. And many elders are earning pensions and can live decent life, instead they are at the mercy of others as they are commanded and demanded for simply being a burden in old age.
