"Institution of Eminence" tag for Jio Institute even before existenceOn Monday, Reliance Foundation's proposed Jio Institute was awarded the status of "Institution of Eminence" along with 2 IITs, IISc, BITS-Pilani and Manipal Academy of High Education. What is astonishing here is Jio Institute is still a proposed one and is not in existence. After widespread criticism from different sections, the MHRD clarified that it is awarded the status in accordance with the rules in place. There is a Greenfield category under which the status of "Institution of Eminence" is awarded to Jio Institute.
It's a kind of a cruel joke and I think the meaning of "Eminence" has to be reinvented by the present political dispensation. The influence of corporates in decision making of the ministries is not new in India and we have seen earlier in many cases where the rules were tweaked for corporates.
The closeness of the Ambani's to the present dispensation is well known and all of their business initiatives have flourished under this dispensation only. Think of Reliance Communication's first entry to the communication field in the early 2000. Now they are in every sector – be it in FMCG, Consumables, Fashion, Oil and now even in the education sector also. When some corporates are spreading their businesses in different sectors, it is always a welcome for the market economy but if they are allowed to spread with direct influence from political dispensations then their capabilities become questionable. What is your opinion about the accorded status?
