What is your opinion on the proposed change of name of Allahabad

This is a very sacred town for Hindus. It is also an ancient city. In every six years, Ardh-kumbh and in every twelve years, Purn-Kumbh is held in Prayag adjacent to the city, where the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Saraswati meet.

Mughal empire Shahjahan had changed the name of the city from Triveni or Prayag to Illahabad. When British shifted their base from Agra to this city, they started pronouncing it as Allahabad. But people of this ancient city haven't forgotten the history. They have been demanding to change the name of the city and bring back the old name, for a quite long time.

Now the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has acceded to the popular demand. The State Cabinet has accepted the proposal to rename the city. Most probably and aptly, the city will be named 'Prayag'.

With this, the long-pending demand will be acknowledged and accepted. I support the change.

For the Hindus residing across the country. it is customary to have the dip in the river ganges at Prayag, Varanasi and do the Sharadh rituals at Gaya. Why the Allahabad is called Prayag because it is the confluence of three rivers namely Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi and that place is called Triveni. Even today we can witness the confleuence of the three great rivers at a spot which has to be reached by boat and the water color would make you identify three types of live river. So being sacred to Hindus, restoring the old name and bringing back the past glory is the need and demand of every Hindu.

I welcome the decision. Today Allahabad is famous for the three rivers getting mixed there and all the Hindus will feel having a bath here is very auspicious. There is a temple of Lord Siva and Goddess Sakthi. People visit those temples definitely when they go to that city. Most of the people from the south when they plan a trip to Varanasi, they plan a halt at this place also to have the sacred bath. Such an important place should have the name in line with the old tradition there. So Prayaga is the correct name for this spot and a good decision.
Many Places in our country got the names changed like this and the concerned governments can think and bring back the original traditional names to such places, In AP the name of a city was Rajamahendravarm. But later it was changed as Rajahmundry. Again the present government of AP changed the name to Rajamahendravaram. All the people of Andhra Pradesh welcomed this decision.

A good proposal to change the name keeping in mind the history of the city. Every city has its own history. As in the case of Allahabad, people go there for the holy dip at the junction of 3 rivers from ancient times. Everything is changing in his world and getting a contemporary look, sometimes forgetting everything of the past. If the naming of a place or a city can be done keeping in mind the traditions of that place, then undoubtedly it's a wonderful move.

If Madras can be Chennai, Cochin can be Kochi, Quilon can be Kollam, Trivandrum can be Thiruvananthapuram, Tuticorin can be Thoothukudi, Bombay can be Mumbai, Pataliputra can be Patna, Calcutta can be Kolkatta, Why not Allahabad be Prayag. I welcome the decision to change the name. You can have the new name, but what about the past history?
