Self-help groups is the ideal way to empower all womenThe emergence of self-help groups for women, with active support from the State Governments in the form of co-operative bank loans, is a tremendous success in South India. There are encouraging reports of women doing superb work. The self-help groups are not merely into catering services.
They are into a huge number of interesting ventures like basket making, handikrafts, and even pens made out of paper. That is, pens that are eco- frendly. This is reportedly done by at least a few self-help groups in and around Coimbatore city.
We should encourage them all the way. In fact, the formal Corporate organizations can also spend a little to train a huge number of even illiterate but trainable women in occupations that can fetch them a decent income. This will not only eliminate poverty, but also help the women to be financially independent.
On this Independence Day, let us get the ball moving, even more than what we have done thus far. It should become a pan-India phenomenon.
