Criticism is like a sound which wakes you up from your pleasant dreams

Sometimes we get very pleasant dreams while sleeping and we do not wish to wake up so that we can keep on enjoying the dream but then suddenly some disturbance or noise wakes us up and we come back to the reality which is not as pleasant as our dream.

Similarly sometimes when we feel that we are doing good work and it is being liked and appreciated by others we tend to get into pleasant dream frame of mind and start believing that everything is going fine and nothing can go wrong. But then sometimes suddenly we get some criticism and our pleasure ride gets obstructed. We get down to the ground and start thinking about what went wrong and what needs to be done to improve it. So here criticism breaks our dream journey of success and brings us back to the ground and makes us rethink as to how can things be done in a better way. In a way, it helps us to take our tasks even more seriously and realize our mistakes.

So criticism is like a sound or disturbance which wakes us from our pleasant dreams and brings us to reality. It also makes us realize that however well we do the things it may still go wrong and there is always a scope of improvement.

So criticism is necessary to keep us tied to the ground.

A very interesting and thought provoking thread by the author.

It is only when people start talking about us or our deeds that we become concious of what we are doing. We should not be afraid of criticism. Let it flow in the events as it is.

Criticism is of different types. It could be damaging to your reputation or reinforcing your thoughts. It could be constructive or sometimes destructive. Many times, though not always, it is derived from the jealousy in social and professional fields.

Whatever be the reason of criticism, it is definitely an alert for us making us to revise or examine our actions before launching them again to open criticism.

No body kicks a dead dog and so if there is a criticism it means that people are taking note of our deeds. That is a good thing but at the same time it gives us opportunity to rectify if certain actions are beyond the acceptable decorum.

    Knowledge is power.

A very good comparison. I think criticism hurts more when you are more attached to your work. Being open to criticism is a very noble habit. There is always something you might be missing. You cannot view a circle sitting inside it after all. Only a person outside the circle can view it properly. So only the people you view your works can provide you with valid insights.

That happens criticism always seems bad for us but that should not happen in reality we should take criticism in a positive way and try to improve yourself. That's the way we can improve.

It's not that criticism is always bad. There are few people who believe that whatever they do is perfect and it can't be done in a more better way but that's their mistake as there is always a scope to improve which we get to know when others judge us and we ourself dont be able to do the judgement of our work. So we should welcome criticism too and should not expect that everyone will appreciate our work.

Criticism always hurts us but if it is done in a positive way with the intention of correcting us and improving our work then I think we should take it in that way only. This will eventually be going to help us in betterment in our tasks.

It is always required. It makes us attentive and it gives an alert to us. To err is human. But repeating the same mistake is never acceptable. Criticism always makes us know our mistakes and gives us a chance to improve upon. There are many people who will have the habit of criticising people without any reason. That criticism need not be taken to our heart. But there are people who will give you a correct picture of your works and your abilities. We should not ignore such criticism. It is called constructive criticism which will help us in improving ourselves and try to avoid mistakes. We should not just like that ignore any criticism. We should try to get the point on which the remarks and try to improve upon that particular aspect so that we will also be compatible with all and we will become much better.

I think most of us take it that what we are doing or saying is correct or that it can't be wrong and that feeling is fine. But one should always be ready to leave some room for the thought that there is a possibility that you may be wrong.

Criticism needs to be taken positively though it may not be easy and it does make us feel bad at the first instance. As said in the responses above, criticism may be constructive, destructive, for the sake of criticizing or due to many other reasons. One has to be wise and practical enough to understand the reason behind a criticism and must either accept or discard the same according to its merit. That having been said, I too agree that criticism of any type should make us rethink about what we are doing or saying. It should work as a means to go back, think, analyze and then come back either by accepting a criticism or discarding it.

People who consider themselves to be complete and that they have left no space for criticism often find themselves being left out from a group. Criticism, if taken positively, is definitely one of the stepping stones towards success.
