Do you think examinations are really necessary?

"Do you like to study"? Ask this question to any child and you will find many of them answering in the affirmative. Though there are a lot many like me who will always answer that there is no point in studying so many books. It's fine as long as you are studying seriously or playing around with your companions, but when it comes to exams, everybody is tensed. Nowadays, even the parents will show their gloomy faces during the exams of their kids to you as if their bosses have punished them in office. To many, it's a phobia. They think exams are everything in life and you need to pass each one of them to be successful.

Now can we imagine a life without exams? There are instances of many students cheating in exams and scoring good marks. There are many who cheat during every exam but clear them successfully. There is even more who score good marks in higher studies but when it comes to applying their knowledge fail miserably. There are numerous entrance exams and students are admitted in the respective courses based on their performances in them. Now, if the traits of a child can be analyzed at the beginning and the course of her/his interest is imparted, is there a necessity for all these exams? You may ask about evaluating what they learn, but aren't the questions in all the exams repetitive? There are sample test papers of several years available in the market and one can easily pass the exams by studying them. In fact, many students are doing that only rather than studying books. Rather than asking many questions about a particular topic why aren't the students judged on their capabilities of applying the knowledge in respective fields?

Examinations are required. But it need not be like the way they are conducting now. Even an open book system is better than the present system. There is no question of copying and cheating in an open book system.
Reading books and acquiring knowledge is very essential. Whether you pass the examination or not, how much knowledge you have is more important. Passing examination is very important for acquiring a degree and a job. But after that for sustaining and going forward knowledge is very important.
One should go through the exam for getting the eligibility and knowledge is important for acquiring a job and sustaining in the job.

The exam is an important thing to check the knowledge gained by a student but exams only should not be the criteria for judging the knowledge of a student. A student should be made to apply that knowledge practically in the related fields.
Both testing a student practically as well as in the exams can be a great thing for a student to enhance and evaluate his capabilities.
Encouraging students to apply their knowledge of related fields would be a nice thing but doing away with exams, I think is not a good idea.

Examination is a mean to assess the student about his capability and the understanding of the subject. What other alternative method is there for this ? Of course by asking the student to handle a class based on a topic which he has studied as part of the course, is a practical method for assessing him.
At the same time, I have experienced several time that present type of examinations are not sufficient to assess a student. In most of the questions there will be choice. Earlier the choice system was not there. Now, even after giving sufficient choice students fail to answer correctly.
In my carrier, I had to handle only PG and Professional students. I very often felt very sorry while valuing the answer papers. There used to have double valuation. Very often the marks awarded by both the examiners would not be matching. The rule says that if there is a difference of more than ten percent between the marks awarded by the two examiners, a third valuation is to be done. When that marks are also got a Passing Board meeting will be held and an evaluation based on all the three marks will be done. In almost all cases the student will be allowed a pass. In short the exam becomes just a farce.

Exams are essentially required for people to assess them what they have learned. If the exams are not conducted how one would be able to know what a person has learned.

Yes, there are people who cheat in exams and pass successfully but they cheat themselves as somewhere they lack knowledge of that particular subject which may be required in life practically later on. It's not compulsory that a person who has topped the school or college may be the same when he does a job. I have seen few toppers who dont get a good job, thats because they may be lacking communication skill/practical knowledge. It's better that one has to have good personal skills also to achieve a good job.

Examinations are basically to assess the student and the methodology can be changed from two exams in a year to monthly exams or so to keep the students alert throughout the year. But in one way or other these are required.

For various recruitments also there are exams and if students are not habitual and experienced of exams they may cut sorry figure in these competitive ones. We have to differentiate between excellent, mediocre and poor students also in respect of academic achievements so that depending upon that we may suggest career path for them.

    Knowledge is power.

Exams help a lot to bring an improvement in the individual's knowledge because they provide regular feedback to the students who acknowledge their shortcomings and work on them. Another advantage is that exams promote competition among students. They work harder to improve their knowledge and skills.

Perceptions will continue to differ for different individuals. If we observe than the overall objective or purpose for any of us would be to prepare ourselves for better financial stability in the coming times which could be by any means including to that of going ahead with the jobs or establishing with our own set-up & for both we would require at least a basic or elementary knowledge of our areas of interest along with the status of our progress which only can be possible through the periodic tests & examinations & therefore it's up to us to decide about how we are going to take this whole. Better to go for some in-depth studies so as to get the subjects in a more comprehensive ways because this will help in getting the extra marks.

In addition, there are pros & cons of every aspects & objects but settling with some positive notes would bring us some good achievements in the end.

Examinations are basically for the assessment of the students and the results after that are their secured educational credentials to be shown later for their job hunting or other endeavours.

In absence of the examinations some other system is to be evolved for the assessment as it is required for proof of capability for applying for a job and like that. We can think of a continuous assessment on weekly or fortnight basis to be summed up at the end of the academic session.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Exams are a method to test the memory of students. Some of us feel that exams are unnecessary and the reason behind it is exams mainly concentrate on theoretical knowledge. It is sad though. When we face the real world, we require a practical approach to handle everything. The theory is necessary as it strengthens the foundation. It would be nicer if exams stressed enough importance to both the aspects to the theories as well as practical's in an equal way.

It is not right to think that it would be good to get rid of exams and abolish them. Exams test intellectual knowledge. Exams may raise the stress in students as well as parents. A few students may pass the exam by cheating but still, its necessity and importance cannot be ruled out. Maybe it is high time to change the strategy and a perfect balance needs to be created between various modules, assessments, and exams.

The questions of each examination is formulated to assess the efficiency and capability of each examinee. The system asks an aspirant to be fully familiar with the course and how the candidate has handled the tough level of the different chapters included in the book and so in a particular set of questions how far one has achieved the grasping of the overhaul course.
I do accept that by going through the Sample - papers available in the market and also by the individual guessing, one may secure impressive marks. This system can be modified to a greater extent where the school administration would conduct tests every four months apart from the final examination to be conducted by the Board. The final marking will be the average of all five examinations. This pattern will keep the aspirants active throughout the year. The pattern of examination teaches one how to apply one's mind in given tough situation. High performance in any test is the indicator of one's high agility and a thorough conceptual clarity. We cannot assess an aspirant through a single test and hence a set of questions in a devided interval would indicate one's true potential.

Examinations are meant to assess whether one has understood or learned something taught. Just think about the system of learning we had. Take for example the Ayurveda practitioners of earlier period. The learning is just by staying with the practising doctor. Actually, the student(s) stay with the doctor and observe how he gathers information about the disease from the patients, the student will make a note of the treatments suggested and hand it over to the doctor. Doctor will read and correct, if necessary, and will hand over the note to the patient. By continuous practice like this the student study the theory and practice to a certain extent. When the doctor is free, he will actually teach by explaining the theoretical part. That is about the disease and the cause of the disease. Also how to treat and what are different medicines, etc. Continuously doing like this following the doctor the student become a junior doctor. Of course, he has not attended any examination here. This a typical case studying without undergoing any examination.

Examination means evaluation. If a student undertakes a course/academic programme, then it is necessary to evaluate his/her level of learning. We must debate the form of examination, which can objectively evaluate the level of learning of a student/students.. We may question a particular method of examination, but not the examination system itself.

There may be a difference of opinion regarding the way exams are conducted, but I strongly feel that examinations are really necessary. Don't we face examinations in real life? It is a test dose to see how we tackle the same. So, for a student, the examination is very important. It helps the teachers in assessing him from different angles, it helps the parents to know where he stands and most importantly, functions as an eye-opener to the students because it helps him to understand the areas where he needs to improve and guides him to make progress as he proceeds ahead.
