Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the only daughter of Late Jawahar Lal Nehru married Feroze Jehangir Ghandy in March 1942. Feroze Jehangir Ghandy was born to a Parsi family his father was , Jehangir Faredoon Ghandy and the mother Ratima.

As per the reports published in Wikipedia , Feroze Jehangir Ghandy was inspired by freedom movement of Mahatma Gandhi and changed the spelling of his surname from "Ghandy" to "Gandhi". In the year 1933, Mr. Feroze Jehangir Ghandy put forth the marriage proposal to Indira Priyadarshini which was rejected by her as well as by Kamala Nehru. Later Indira and Feroz became closer in England and finlly marriage took place in the year 1942.

The name correction by Mr. Feroz Ghandy accredited the sir name of Gandhi to Indira Gandhi, Rajeev Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Varun Gandhi.

You are right. Since Nehru had no male successor, the family was named Gandhi perforce, to carry the name of Ghandy turned Gandhi. Nehru could not succeed in that aspect of retaining his family name Nehru by his future generations.

Yes. Nehru had only one daughter that is Indira Priyadarshini. After she married Feroze Jehangir Gandhi she has become Indira Gandhi. Indira is not exactly from the Gandhi family. She is from Nehru family and both the sons of Indira were Gandhis as their father last name is Gandhi.
