What happened on this day in 1982?

30th April 1982. In the middle of the Ballygunge rail overbridge, which is one of the busiest parts of South Calcutta, in broad daylight, seventeen sannyasins of Anandamarg were pulled out of the taxis, doused in kerosene oil and were set on fire alive. Who did this? This was done by the ruling party at that time, CPI(M)'s pet goondas.

There were three police stations within a radius of 1 km from the stop of the carnage - Ballyguange GRP, Kasba and Gariahat. Not even one guilty person was punished.

On the day of 30th April, we must know the violent nature of the marxists, which the people of the maoist-affected parts of the country understand very well.

This type of heinous crimes are condemnable. The goons are doing it and there is no one to catch the culprits. It shows that the law and order situation is ineffective and the goons are hand in gloves with the political leaders.

For their political gains some politicians are keeping these goons under them for various misc jobs time to time. Police also is helpless as they are fearful of getting transfer to a remote place or some other penalty.

    Knowledge is power.

Very sad and people travelling in a car were pulled out and set on fire alive. Even after 36 years of happening when we read the incident, it gives a lot of pain to the heart. Why people are so cruel. When you don't know how to create you have no right to destroy. This incident indicates the mentality of the people and the importance they have given to a human being.
For their personal gains, the politicians are resorting to all types of inhuman deeds. For them, the ultimate is to make money and for that they want power. In this process, they never care for the lives of other people. The law and order enforcing people are also in the hands of these politicians and they will also become silent spectators in the total happenings.
The politicians should tolerate the presence of other parties also. They should win the confidence of the people by doing good deeds and win their hearts. But they should not resort to killings for their benefits.

No, they were killed simply because they were following a sect of Hinduism. The so-called atheist marxists did this crime.

I was reading the issue and found that

Ananda Margis from all over the country were headed to an "educational conference" at the Tiljala centre. It was Bijon Setu in the Ballygunge area of south Kolkata. Taxis carrying monks and sanyasins were stopped at least three separate locations, doused in petrol and kerosene, and set on fire. At least 17 Margis were charred to death, several others were severely injured.

It was said by the local people that the Margis were kidnapping and trafficking children. The CPM claimed the killings were masterminded by the Margis themselves to malign the government.

It was very sad that people were burnt and painful that after 36 years no one has been caught and punished for this heinous crime.

This is really sad and in bad taste that some bad elements in our political system can go to such extent of mass murdering the people having different ideologies. These people think themselves above everyone as they have close connect with the local police and administration. We need to enhance the present governance to tackle these goons.
    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
