ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 - Part 2

As we are in the second stage of the Cricket world cup 2019, I am starting the continuation of the thread started by me for the round robin stage. We all now know the four top teams who are qualified for the semi-finals.

The top 4 teams qualified in the ascending orders are:
    1. INDIA with 15 points [Won-7, Lost-1,Drew - 1]
    2. Australia with 14 points [Won-7, lost - 2]
    3. England with 12 points [Won - 6, Lost - 3]
    4. New Zealand with 11 points [Won-5, Lost - 3, Drew - 1]

In this world cup, many records have been made, these are :
    1. Rohit Sharma(Ind) with 5 centuries in a single world cup equalled the maximum number of centuries with Sachin Tendulkar of total 6 centuries in world cups.
    2. Mitchell Starc has topped the wicket-takers with 26 wickets and also equalled the maximum wicket with former Australian bowler Glen McGrath with 26 wickets in the world cup.

Now we are heading towards the semi-finals of the world cup from Tuesday.

    1. Match 1.
Teams - India vs New Zealand on Tuesday, 9th July 2019
    Ground - Old Trafford

    2. Match 2.
    Team - Australia vs England
    Ground - Edgbaston

Now members can post your reviews for the upcoming matches, predictions, your favourite team, your favourite players and the one who according to you will contribute for their team, etc.

    Let's begin.

It looks difficult for India to win from New Zealand as I have seen that NZ always performs well in world cups and it will not be surprising if they defeat India. In another match in my opinion chances of winning of England is more as they are playing in their country.

Having won seven matches and lost only one match with England, I am sure, India will win against NewZeland. Rahul and Rohit will repeat their best. Also, I see Australias win against England. We can see the Indians dashing against the Aussies in the Final. Sure to see Indians returning with a cup in hand.

India is is good form and one of the tough contender in the semi finals. Though, India lost to NZ in the warm up match, the come back was good.
NZ has lost it's 3 match with the best team and thus giving India a top position on them.

Some of the semi final look-up:
    1. In the total world cup clash with the teams(India vs NZ), out of 8 clashes, India has won 3, Nz has won 4 and 1 Abandoned.
    2. This is India's 7th Semi-final in the world cup. Out of the past 6, India has won 3 and lost 3
    3. This is NZ's 7th Semi-final in the world cup. Out of the past 6, India has won 1 and lost 5

@ Varghese. Is it not NZ won 1 and lost 5. Please correct me if I am wrong.
In my opinion, India is having fair chances to win the semifinal match tomorrow. Old Trafford is full of runs. I think this match is going to be a huge score match. Bowlers are going to play a key role in controlling the batsmen. India is in good form and all the players are doing well in their given roles. So if all the things go well there is every chance for India to win the match and go for the final. However, in this game, anything can happen. When India won the world cup for the first time, nobody thought that India will win. In the match with Zimbabwe, the Indian team was struggling at 36 for 5. Then came the big innings from the then Captain Kapil Dev who went on to score 162 runs and India won the match and India won the cup. So predictions can be done but the actual result will depend on the performance of the players on that particular day. So let us hope for the best and let us support our team India. I wish all the best to team India.

As India will take on New Zealand in the first semi finals of the ICC world cup 2019 at Old Trafford, today at 3:00 Pm(IST), all will have their eyes on India as per the favorites in this world cup.
Winning probability : India 70% and NZ 30%

There are few concerns that arises at the venue:
    1. The ground- Old trafford has being a batting supporting venue and the team that has batted first in the 5 matches played earlier have won the match.
    2. The ground is a high-scoring ground of 325+ runs for batting first teams. England vs Afghanistan is the example of the run scoring machine.
    3. The climatic conditions predicts cloudy sky and forecast fitful burst of rain throughout. The captains winning the toss will have to consider all these factors before going for the choice. DLS method can come into play due to rain and hence, the captains winning the toss will favor batting first.
    4. Williamson, Latham, Neesham, Taylor, Guptill, Grandhomme in batting and Ferguson, Boult, Santner, Sodhi, Southee in bowling.

Few Good news before Semi - finals :
    - MS Dhoni will be playing his 350th match (India vs NZ - Semi final) as will become the first wicketkeeper player to play consecutive 350 ODIs. He is also the 2nd indian player ODIs after Sachin tendulkar who has played 463 ODIs. He will also become the 10th cricketer to reach 350 ODIs.
    - Rohit sharma has scored 647 runs in 9 matches this world cup and falls 26 runs short to cross the highest runs by the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 673 in the world cup matches.
    - If rains washes out the game today and the reserve day, the team that finished higher on the point table in the round robin ( league) stage will advance to the finals. In today's case, if the match is washed out between India and New Zealand, India stands a chance to reserve its seat in the Finals of the ICC world cup 2019.
-If in the finals, the games are washed out i.e. even on the reserve day, the trophy will be shared by the two finalists.
    - If the game ends in a tie, there will be a super over to decide the winner( this is for all knock out games/fixtures).

All the best team India, let's hope for the best and a win over the black caps.

It will be a huge disappointment if the weather Gods spoil the semifinal show! Even though a reserved day is kept for a re-match in case the match is fully abandoned, what is the guarantee that tomorrow also the match will not get played? What then? I feel that whenever there is a problem of rain, at least then the venue should be immediately changed for the reserved day to one where rain will not interfere and spectators given the option to go to the new venue with the same tickets. Arrangements can even be made for public transport to convey the spectators from the area where the first venue is located to the second venue and back.

Although it may be a batting ground, with weather playing the role of third umpire, so to say, it is doubtful if a score of 300+ will come up even if the teams get to play. I don't think either team batting first will put up a huge score. Let us hope that our captain wins the toss, though, and that the brittle middle order firms up well. I wonder if Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will be playing today. Will it be Shami back in the squad and Jadeja being retained?

  • #669990
NZ won the toss and decided to bat first. So Kohli is walking into the ground with his team first for fielding. The bowlers have to give an early wicket and see that the score will be reachable to our Indian team. Ground full of runs.
Hopefully, there may not be any problem with the weather. Let us wait for a power-filled game on the cards and the game may start in another half an hour. Yuzvendra Chahal is in as a spinner in place Kuldeep. Shami is not there in the playing 11. Kohli says he might have also opted for batting if he might have won the toss.

    Pity is that
Newzealand won the toss and chose to bat,
    What will be India's fate?

It is a pity that Shami has not been retained although it is a fact that he came in as a replacement for Bhuvaneshwar Kumar when the latter got injured. Shami was having a superb run and would have taken early wickets. Let's hope Kumar comes good in this game! We also have the problem of having the ability to take wickets at a regular pace but leaking too many runs later in the game. Those runs could cost us the match when we come in to bat later if the D/L rules come into play.

The toss is just happened and the NZ opted to bat. Out of the 5 matches played at this venue, batting first has won 3 times and the batting 2nd has won 2 times. The interesting point is India have played 2 games here and won 2 games(batted first). Now they are going to chase on the same venue. The last match played on this venue is b//w SA vs AUS where SA won by 10 runs. Some close matches were happened here. So, I feel the same is gonna repeat. Wishing the India All the Best!!

  • #669997
OMG! What a fielding by India restricting the NZ to score only 5 runs in 5 overs(30 balls)! India is doing good to grab a win.

NZ are slowly coming into the game. Though the conditions are hard to bat, they only lost one wicket and maintained good run rate

  • #670001
What a start for India, the early wicket of Guptill by Bumrah and after 15 overs New Zealand are just 57 for 1. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has done a good job of 5 overs going for just 13 runs. It would be good if the could take a wicket or two to justify dropping Shami.

  • #670002
India has striked again and has got the 2nd wicket through R. Jadeja of H. Nicholls 28(51) and the 68 runs partnership is broken. Now NZ is 70/2 in 19 overs. Waiting for the wicket of Williamsons, the wall of NZ batting.

As per the latest updates, if the game cannot be continued today, India will be given the target as per DLS method.

The DLS calculation for the first semi final game is :
    - 46 overs 237 runs to win
    - 40 overs 222 runs to win
    - 35 overs 209 runs to win
    - 30 overs 192 runs to win
    - 25 overs 172 runs to win
    - 20 overs 148 runs to win

If the game cannot be continued tomorrow, India will move ahead to play finals as India was ahead at the league stage.

  • #670028
So, the play has been taken off for today. The match will continue from where it stopped today, that is, New Zealand will bat with 2.5 overs remaining at 15:00 IST tomorrow. India will get the full 50 overs to play. But according to the weather forecast for Manchester, it is going to rain more heavily tomorrow as compared to today. The same situation can arise as today, but according to the rules, if the match cannot be played with even the 2 hours additional time, the referee can decide to extend the play and in that additional time, if the rain stops, a super over can be played between the two teams to decide the result. Even if the super over cannot be played, then the team with a higher position on the points table, that is, India in this case, will move to the finals.

  • #670055
India is anyway at an advantageous position whether it rains or not. Otherwise also the score of New Zealand is not much of a target and India can easily reach that. Still the match today will be interesting to watch if it does not rain and ample time is there to play all the overs.
    Knowledge is power.

  • #670069
I don't what is going to happen. Yesterday bowlers were doing a very good job and they restricted the batsmen for a very low score. But rain in between spoiled. Today if rains heavily and there is no play, Indian will be in finals. But if some restricted overs are to be played we have to see. The pitch condition may not be that good and making runs will be a difficult proposition. So now all is dependent on the rain and how it behaves. India is an advantage of more points and that will be a fetching point for them. So let us hope for the best.

NewZealand could score 239/8 (50 overs). India to try their best to make 240 with their good batsman Rahul, Rohit, Kohli and Dhoni. It is not easy or difficult against New Zealand. It would be interesting to watch Indian struggling to reach 240 .

Update: The hope is lost. Rohit is caught out at 1(4). As we hoped, he could not add 00 to his 1.

Very bad to India. Both the openers and captain are back in the pavilion with just 5 runs on the board. Is it due to the effective bowling or bad pitch or disturbed minds of the batsmen? I think NZ may win the match. Chances are pretty less for India now. Bad luck. Rain played a bad role for India yesterday.

At present, India is in wobble state. India has lost its top 4 batsmen for mere 24 runs in 10 overs, the lowest by a team in this world cup in the powerplay 1. India will have to hold on to the wickets and also make the scoreboard moving with playing the loose ball and defending the good ball.
One thing India need to keep in mind is that it needs to maintain the run rate of 7.4 to get the 148 runs in 20 overs in order to be safe in rain interrupts the game again and DLS method comes into effect.

India is in the back seat in the semi finals. India is 95/5 in 30 overs at a CRR of 3.07. Everyone is struggling with the kiwis bowling. It will be very difficult for India to reach the target if they don't keep the wickets. The pitch is really helping kiwis and India shaking.

Let us postmortem the defeat of India. Study, analyze and discuss the cause.
Is it due to overconfidence of our top order players?
Is it due to the previous day's rain and pitch condition?
Is it due to the efficient bowlers who took the first three wickets fast?
    Or any other reason.

    No life without Sun

  • #670120
It is due to the pitch condition. The match should have been started from the beginning so as to give a chance to play to both the teams in the same condition. Pitch was wet which posed problems for the Indian batsmen causing them to get out so easily.

What a match it was! There were rain delays, brilliant displays of fielding and an unexpected outcome in the end. At the end of the day, we must acknowledge the fact that it was the better team that ultimately tasted victory at the Old Trafford.

I still think that New Zealand were twenty or thirty runs short when they finished their innings at 239 runs. But in the end they proved that none of that matters if you have a world class bowling attack (and excellent fielders to back it up).

It was a match that stretched for two days and in the end, boiled down to an absolute pressure packed last half an hour or so. Since Kane Williamson's men were the ones who were able to maintain their cool even in the pressure cooker scenario, they earned their tickets to the final game. Whether they are able to repeat this performance at the Lords a few days later, we simply have to wait and see.

As for why India lost this match, I think it boils down to the brilliant display of bowling from New Zealand. Yes, the conditions did play their part, but overstating that would be an injustice to New Zealand's performance, isn't it?

  • #670130
A sad day for Indian fans, so near yet so far. In the beginning, our win probability was 85%, but just after a few balls, it dropped to less than 25% in the live score websites. This is the game of cricket, take nothing for granted. We can talk about the pitch etc, but when you are 5 for 3! then only a miracle could have saved us. The saving grace is at least the rest got us to 221. Probably we under-estimated the NZ side, there were at their best and today belonged to NZ.

  • #670139
Really it is sad to see that India fell at last step of their entry into final. Indian team has to blame itself that they have not proved their batting provess and which costed this match. Kartheek is not a one day expert batsman and how he was brought into the team not known?

  • #670153
It was a bad day for India and in spite of our advantageous position we lost this crucial match. Attributing the defeat to pitch conditions or things like that is only an excuse and no one will buy that line of explanation. It clearly shows that we have to still horn our skills in this game if we want to be numero uno in the world cricket.

As we know, the best team wins and that stood correct yesterday. Kiwis gave their best as they knew that they were short of runs on the board and had to keep the pressure by bowling and fielding. Wishing Kiwis best of luck for the finals.

Now coming to India, Not atall a semi-final game on display. Some of the concern and questions that come to my mind about yesterday's play:
    1. There was a pitch study by experts and the team to know more details about the pitch.
    2. We had 4 overs at the start, which we bowled brilliantly, this should have given our team the caution, that the pitch has swing and our batsmen need to concentrate on playing without loosing the wicket in the first powerplay.
    3. We had our 6 coaches for different notes, batting, bowling, fielding, etc, who could have analysed the ground condition.
    4. We had deep batting order, 8 batting line-up, upto bhuvaneshwar Kumar, but no use.
    5. The first wicket of Rohit Sharma, after 2 maiden over itself send the message that the pitch has turned and is favouring the bowlers, helping with swing, no one gave a damn about it. Did they not discuss the situation to coach and others.
    6. We had the top 2 batsman in the ICC ranking, what was the use. Why do they go to defend instead of playing their natural game.
    7. India forgot the basic of cricket, rotating the strike which would have helped the score ticking, released pressure from the batsman. The best example that we had in this world cup was from Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh), He use to come in 4th or 5th position but would the scoreboard moving as well as keeping the wicket intact.
    8. I feel, our team are more concern with individual scores and records than for team or India whereas, Others play for their team.
    9. The only world cup where India came to the top of table and stood as a competitive team and threat to others gave a bad impression by loosing in such style. We fought but how?
    10. Shami and Jadeja had played well in their warm-up match against Kiwis, but they were rested in other matches. They proved their potential when they were given chance but why were they not given enough chance?
    11. India always played with 5 bowlers, What if 1 bowler is hurt or being targeted, what is the other option. No bowlers to cover them.
    12. All teams had 5 Bowlers and 2-3 part time bowlers, India lacked here?

Just my view on yesterdays match. India played but not as expected.

I liked your point number eight. It is a well thought point which is the truth. Among the team, Dhoni is a man who thinks about the team, and he did his best to save the team, but he could not.

The game has gone. The team which is on the top of the table after the completion of all preliminary matches succumbed to pressure. I think our top-order batsmen didn't apply themselves correctly. We say the pitch is bad. But please remember that the batsmen from NZ added 28 runs to the overnight score. They lost 3 wickets in that process. But our top batsmen added 1 run and lost 3 wickets. Is not a failure? A batman should adapt himself to the situation and change his strategy of playing. But it is lacking in our team. Somewhere I read a comment, these days Rohit is riding on a bike. It is true. Why should not he defend the ball instead of playing a natural game? The shot selection by Rahul for which ball he got out is very bad and he might have defended the ball. Anyhow Jadeja played a good role and we should appreciate Dhoni also and his run out is the turning point. Otherwise, going for 3 sixes in the last minute is not a difficult task for him. What is the contribution from Dinesh Karthik? Shami in his place might have done a good job.

Yesterday England played excellent with vigour and determination in their game and a desire to go ahead to finals. They have put a good show and now their chances in winning the world cup have become more brighter. Australian team was definitely a challenge for them and that they have mitigated nicely by scoring magnificently. Their run rate was more than 6 and that itself is a good indication that they are playing with zeal and full confidence. Let us hope they continue and maintain the same tempo in the finals also.

England played magnificently and there is no doubt that they can make it also in the final and take the world cup with them.

Good performance by England team yesterday in the semifinal. Now the teams England and New Zealand will play the finals. These two countries so far never won the world cup. We all gone wrong in expecting India to win the semifinals.

A good command on the 2nd semi finals by England over Australia. Australia never seemed to come on the game as England kept the pressure and did well in all the forms, from bowling, fielding and batting. They have made a good statement by their game that they are all good for the finals and also to win the championship.

As mentioned, both the teams have never won the world cup, it will be their first chance. Both the country are eagarly waiting for the trophy to reach their country.

Seeing the consistent performance of England in this series, it is apparent that their winning chances are more. Still, we can not be sure about this as there are other factors which sometimes take control of the situation and something unexpected happens in the game. Cricket is a game of chance and is famous for such unexpected results. So let us wait till the results of this prestigious match are known.

Today's match is so far going in the favour of England as many surveys and predictions in the internet are showing 70% chances for their success. Still these predictions are based on the statistics and can fail also. So only after the game starts and a team makes a good score or very low score, it is difficult to say something with more confidence. Prediction in cricket is always a matter of difficult speculation because the game can take a turn anytime in favour of a team and they will then lift the trophy.

As the 2 finalist clashes to get the ICC world cup to their homeland, the fight will be nail biting one. Both have made good performance and have played well to reach the finals. Even tough the host has a upper hand on the trophy, the Kiwis cannot be taken lightly.

    New Zealand :
    - New Zealand beat India, the table topper and proved that even low score match can be won with good all round performance by the team.
    - This is NZ's 2nd world cup final. The earlier was in 2015 which they lost to Australia.
    - The player to look for NZ are : Williamson (C), , Neesham,Boult, Henry, Ferguson

    England :
    - England beat the defending champion Australia in the same way as NZ beat India in the 1st Semi final.
    - This is England's 4th World cup finals. They have lost all the 3 finals which they played, 1979, 1987 & 1992.
    - England(Lord's) has hosted 4 world cup final but the host have never won any.
    - The player to look for England are : Morgan (C), Butler, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Archer,

Some of the predictions are in Kiwis side and some say it's England. Let's wait and watch who takes the cup home - the black or the blue

Predictions are based on our own hunch and could not become true. Even predictions based on historical data and statistical analysis can also be proved wrong as the real results of a match are sometimes not only surprising but amazing also. That is the thrill of a cricket match that people bet on it like a blind gamble.

Chris Woakes once again had a magical spell after Liam Plunkett took the initial wickets. Jofra Archer is bowling the final over. I am still confident that the bowlers of the Black Caps will have an even better run up to the 22 yards' strip and scuttle out their opponents. Cheering for them!

I am still with New Zealand and think they will lift the world cup this time. They are a good team this time and can shock England with their bowling.

Jofra Archer took a wicket in the final over. New Zealand has been set a target of 242 runs at the rate of 4.82 runs per over.

The semi finals and the finals were a low scoring games. The first semi finals were 239, The second were 223 and today the finals is 241. The rain has played its role and we can see that the pitch is getting slower and slower. The ball is not coming on the bat and the batsmen are finding it difficult to keep scoreboard ticking. Waiting a good fight from the home team.

The target of 242 is not a big target but if the England team plays under pressure it could be a difficult task also. Currently the run rate of England is not impressive and already 18 overs gone. They have to increase their run rate otherwise it will be tough to cover in the later part of the match.

England now under pressure has lost their 4 wickets, the top order batsmen and have just made 99 in 25 overs

Over by over the position of the England team is deteriorating. The required run rate of 6.6 is not a joke when already 4 wickets are lost. Now if these batsmen score some amazing scores then only we can hope something otherwise the target score of 242 is going to be a massive one to follow and reach by the England team. It is true that cricket is a game of chance as the match results are going contrary to the predictions where England was given a probability of more than 70% for winning. Let us see how the game goes in its last leg.

A great final where the two teams exceptionally fought for the cup. Exceptional fielding of Newzeland , heroic fight back of England rock the final resulted in equalling the scores after 50 overs. It made the two teams to play super over.

  • #670508
What a final... England won the ICC world cup 2019 with a great effort and what a performance showcased by both the teams. The cup remains their's for the first time.

Yes, it was a great final between both the teams. The scores were tied and super over was played. And England won the cup at the end. This is their first world cup win.

A great match between England and New Zealand. Both the team's fought really well but bad luck for New Zealand. I think this is the first game when no team lost the match.

Tied and boundaries decided the winner! The silly rule in cricket! It hurted Newzealand badly.

  • #670515
It was really a very interesting match and the end of the match was so exciting that we were counting the relationship between the remaining balls and expected runs after each ball was over. This type of situation comes rarely but it happened yesterday and though New Zealand played very well but as per the rules of the game and procedures in such situation finally England lifted the trophy. A good day for England team and sadly New Zealand missed it narrowly. Yes, it is true that cricket is a game in which we can not predict anything.

What a climax. The viewers were standing as they were not able to sit. Nail bitting finish. England won the cup for the first time in the history of world cup. Let us congratulate them.

A lesson to be learnt by Indian players from the above match is playing under pressure is what required for winning cups. Players like Kapil dev a true all rounder ever produced by India are the need of the hour. The so called top rank players should be able to perform when there is a crisis.

What a finish for the ICC world cup 2019. The finals of the tournament made history in itself. The full match was suspenseful. The 1st inning of the Kiwis was everyone taught that they have given the better side an easy chase and would provide a simple finish to the end.

The second innings took the full depth of the batting order as kiwis bowled and fielded well keeping them(ENG) under pressure. The match took to its climax in the last over and the 4 run overthrow gave luck to the England team. That overthrow took away the match and landed the finals in the super over slot.

The super over started and the home team finished with a better hand i.e. 15/0, the same target which the England team needed in the 50 over. The black cap came and put in full effort and it was a suspenseful end. 2 runs in the last ball, the correct bowling, the confident batting and good fielding took the super over to a tie.

The only luck which turned to Endlang's favor was that they had scored 21 boundaries throughout the 50 overs & super over whereas, the black caps settled to only 16 boundaries. The result declared and England lifted the ICC world cup 2019. The Race ended with tears but a good fight till the end by both the teams.

I have attached the ICC world cup 2019 summary (Game 1 to Game 48)for everyone.

As many players of the sport and fans have said, it was an idiotic rule which decided the winners. In my opinion, truly there should have been joint winners this time. When the super over also ended in a tie, how can the number of boundaries decide the winner? Ridiculous. And what about those runs declared when a throw-in hit the bat? The bat was basically an inadvertent obstruction in the path of the ball. Suppose the ball had hit a helmet, bounced off high and gone into the stands? What then? Surely some common sense should be applied. It is high time the ICC woke up and stop the sport from becoming a mockery of itself.

The two threads you initiated for the 2019 Cricket World Cup were brilliant innings. You kept the threads alive with your lucid commentary and updates and truly incited wholesome participation from many of us, whether fans of the sport or not! The attachment you put in your last response was a very well done effort. At a glance, I got the information I was looking for under the 'Highlights', namely the players who scored the most runs, those who took the most wickets, etc. In your own words, "what a finish"!!

Thanks for the entertaining, "sporting" time you gave all of us.
