Another round of injustice to the people of J&K

Amid this COVID crisis, when leaders across the globe are fighting against this virus to protect its citizens, the central government came up with a new domicile law which has left people of J&K perplexed and worried.

The present amendment provides that people who have resided in Kashmir for fifteen years and a few others would be a domicile of the Union Territory. Amid the unprecedented lockdown and restricted internet services, the govt. took it as an opportunity. Kashmir woke up to this domicile law on April 1st which is astonishing and shocking. This law has been hugely criticised by all political parties cutting across party ideologies in J&K.

On a humanitarian note, it would not be wrong to suggest that salt has been heaped on the injuries of the people of J&K amid the Corona crisis. This move has further downgraded J&K economically, politically and psychologically with the obvious aim to change the demography of the territory.

Can we discuss this issue rationally and impartially without any political inclinations?

Umar, your anxiety and agitation as a person from J&K is understood. I also agree that the centre could have deferred the decision until the present crisis was over. That apart, would you please, for the consumption of the readers, elaborate on why you are feeling worried about the decision?

Considering the present situation in the valley, I doubt if anyone from outside the territory, with some exceptions like business people etc, would choose to settle down in the valley. When even the Kashmiri pandits who have lost their homes are reluctant to return despite the promise made by the centre, I don't think the amendment would have any serious effect on the territory as you fear.

All said and done, I personally feel that the government should have tried to instil confidence among the people of J&K by implementing progressive measures to improve the living conditions before moving another step that may make them feel insecure. But again, I am of the strong opinion that terrorism and support (active as well as passive) to terrorists and terrorist groups must end for total normalcy, in every aspect, to return to the valley- the Paradise on Earth.

What I feel that the Modi government has done the right thing in bringing the domicile law to Jammu and Kashmir and thereby protecting the rights of the youth who are now eligible to get the government jobs. What the order clearly says that those who are resident of the state for 15 years and those who are migrants for the same period are also eligible to get the jobs. This is a very good development when the opposition was spreading wrong message that the youth would be driven away from the state in pretext or the other. By the way, how can outsiders be allowed to enjoy the benefits of new jobs when the new state was created to cater to the needs of locals.

J & K is going through a positive transformation and the present Govt is trying to bring it to the main stream as it was away from the main stream for last so many decades. Once the transformation is over the citizens of Kashmir would get all the rights and facilities as the citizens of other states are getting so the residents of Kashmir should be happy with these changes rather weeping on them. Once they are in the main stream then there are equal opportunities for them to apply anywhere in the country, apply for any examination, go to any state for job, marry a girl or boy from any part of India etc. Actually they should celebrate it rather than having any apprehension. It is unfortunate that they are not aware of all the good things being done for them. I can only pity with their ignorance.

I think in the long run definitely it is good for J and K and its residents. The people of J&K are now like the people belonging to any other state in India. They will have all the rights and responsibilities like any other citizen of India. Now the people from this area can be happy about the things that are happening around them. But some people may not be realizing the efforts of the government to bring back the citizens of this place to the mainstream of the country. As far as my thought process goes I feel domicile law to Jammu and Kashmir will be good for the people of this area. They can compete for any post anywhere in the country.

    Umesh,
Changes have already taken place, it is not for good but problems are going to double for people in JK. The main motive is to change the demography of JK. You often brag of the irrational transformation of JK as a good one which is beyond the truth and far from reality. It is actually to disintegrate the identity of people in JK and reduce them into the minority which is very evident by the fact that only 4th class jobs have been reserved for JK in a newly made domicile law.
All political parties including the one made by the Delhi's blessings have lambasted the domicile law, even BJP in JK have criticises this decision.
People have every right to express their opinion and you can't snatch this right from people.

Without beating around the bush, I should simply say that J and K is part of India. It is one state among the Indian states. It should be treated in line with all the states of India. After the initial problems, everything would be normal in due course of time. J and K will be like any other Indian states without any discrimination. People of J&K should also feel that they are Indians like all other 130 crore Indians.

The Government of India has taken back the new domicile law two days after it was issued. All the political parties opposed them. At a time when the whole country is facing the coronavirus problem, the Government of India should not have thought about bringing such a law. The concentration should be on the pandemic rather than unnecessary issues that can be dealt with later.

KVRR, the domicile law has not been withdrawn. It has now been amended, after strong opposition from all quarters cutting across party lines, to reserve all posts in the Union Territory for the domiciles of J&K. Before the amendment, only subordinate posts were reserved.
