Great One Day Internationals - A good fielding can win a low scoring match!

After winning the World Cup in 1983, the Indian cricket team emerged stronger in playing One-day matches and the neighboring cricket lovers in Dubai and UAE started holding matches/tournaments for the Cricket playing nations in the Asian region. A match between India and Pakistan always would be seen in high pitch and there were regular tournaments conducted at their permanent venue Sharjah. One of the matches played at Sharjah on 22nd March 1985 has its prime importance and an everlasting good memory in the minds of the cricket-loving people, particularly not because their favorite stars scored centuries but for a very good bowling and beautiful fielding.

The very first match played at Sharjah in the Rothman Sharjah Cup tournament in March'85 by India against Pakistan was very interesting. It was a 50 over the match and having won the toss, the Pakistan Skipper Imran Khan asked the Indian team led by Kapil Dev to bat first. Openers Shastry and Srikant were quick to leave the crease in the very first over but Azharuddin tried to stabilize the innings with his valiant knock of 47 in 93 balls supported by Kapil Dev who scored just 30 facing 47 balls. Regular opener Gavaskar was brought down to middle order but he too failed miserably along with Dilip Vengsarkar. Indians were all out for 125 in 42.4 overs. Imran Khan claimed 6 wickets and the fielding was perfectly worked out restricting India at a low score.

The Indian fans were totally disappointed as losing the match was inevitable and we all switched off the live telecast and left for our studies. But we were shocked to hear that India won the match as Pakistan were all out for 87 in just 32.4 overs. The marvelous fielding by our players in stopping the ball and not allowing to cross the ropes and good deliveries by our Pacers and Spinners definitely brought an edge over Pakistan. The unimaginable catches at 1st slip and 2nd slip by Sunil Gavaskar changed the complexion of the match. He took 5 catches of the Pakistan top order batsmen and played a sheet anchor role in India's win just because of his brilliant catches though he didn't score any runs in the match. Thus, a good fielding will save a match and you can have the highlights of the match in YouTube too.

Just share your thoughts on the match which you liked most!

True. Those days even in oneday matches very high scores were not there and anything above 200 was being considered as a good score. The chances for bowlers are very less as they limited-overs only. So any chance coming in their way should not be wasted by the fielders. All matches should be held. That is why people will say catches will win matches.
I remember seeing the match only up to India batting. But later on, highlights were seen on TV. There are many such matches which gave unexpected results. In 1983 world cup matches against Zimbabwe, India lost quick wickets and everybody thought India will return back after losing that do or doe match. The then Captain Kapil Dev with his fast scoring 183 not out brought India a success. After that match, India never looked back and went on winning and finally one the cup. An excellent match.

In the game of cricket both the things are important that is batting as well as fielding. If a team excels in both then it would naturally win the match. At the same time if a team is outstanding in only one of these activities then also it has good chances to win the match.
    Knowledge is power.
