Amnesty International - India closes down its Indian office, right or wrong?

Amnesty International a NGO from UK has packed its bags from India after its bank accounts were seized by the ED for FERA and FCRA violations to the tune of 36 crores.

Amnesty International has been in past involved in many controversial issues which has taken the headlines of newspaper. The organization is blaming the Government for its closure.

Every organization works under the ambit of law in the country where it operates and it must follow the due process to continue working in the country. FCRA laws are pretty stringent and any violation does involve seizure of bank accounts and it can happen and does happen with many NGOs who receive foreign donations/funding. Due permission and compliance is needed in case of such receipts and even filing of annual returns is required to be done. If all the things are in place then there is no need of such knee jerk reaction and closing the complete office at once.
