    Whatsapp privacy issues and online learning

    It is as if a hornet's nest is disturbed. Millions of Whatsapp users are now confused and confounded since the word about the new privacy terms of Whatsapp-FaceBook data sharing matter is announced and being discussed.

    I am wondering what is going to happen to the many Whatsapp groups in which my two nieces (one studying in 6 th class and the other studying in 9 th class) are members. Since the beginning of online classes, each one is a member of the many WhatsApp group their School teachers started. They are members of separate Whatsapp Groups like 9 A Science, 9A Maths, 9 A environmental etc. Then they are also members in WhatsApp groups by Junior Red cross, Music group, Gita Class etc. They are clarifying doubts, completing assignments ,attending tests, getting instructions etc via these Whatsapp groups.

    Compare and contrast this with that of people like ISC ME who had only a few contacts in a couple of whatsapp groups and who easily exited Whatsapp "and have switched to the Signal" (as noted in this thread.)

    What is the position of these students viz-a-viz Whatsapp? Had you seen this kind of instances in your family? How you propose to solve the issue?

    I have also heard about new policies of WhatsApp group, a lot of people are confused that their privacy will be compromised, and this matter has created a feeling of insecurity in them and most of them are switching to other options like signal app. When large number of users will leave these apps company will have to incur a big loss.

    Today, I read The Hindu newspaper. In the front full page ad reads like this -

    Yesterday there was a press release from WhatsApp. It says that individual chats will not get affected by the changes whatsoever. That means the chats we make with our friends, relatives and family members will not have any effect and our data will be secured only. The messages sent on chats will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.
    WhatsApp aid that WhatsApp or Facebook will noyl see the messages users sent to each other. They will not hear the conversations over calls also They are not going to maintain a record of activities by the members. The location shared by users also will not be accessed by WhatsApp or Facebook. They also said that they will share the contact of users with Facebook. The changes are more for people who want to manage their business through this platform.
    As such school students can continue their work on WhatsApp.

    Why everyone is worried about the privacy issues with Whatsapp now? We are accepting the terms and conditions of many digital platforms without reading them. The problem arose due to the fact that Whatsapp is asking all the members using it to accept their new privacy policy wherein it will share the data collected with Facebook. The privacy problems with Whatsapp were there previously also. We never bothered about it. The Airtel company misused the Aadhar based verification of the mobile customers and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) temporarily suspended it from conducting Aadhaar-based verification. Everyone using internet is at the risk of their data being available to companies that are interested. I do not think there is no new danger and to whichever platform we migrate, we will face the same.

    Whenever we download any app from Google Play, after opening it, every app asks for several sari permissions and we also allow them to access many other apps. Apart from this, some people could also accept the term condition many times without reading it. But these days only one news that Whatsapp has updated its policy, suddenly everyone is getting worried about their privacy. Suppose there are some updates that are related to privacy, but there is no need to worry too much as management and the head department already declared this they will not break your trust about you privacy policy. We will understand more slowly after our update. However, apart from this, there are many apps that can prove to be good messaging apps, in case of the dilemma we can use those apps as well.

    But the damage has been done for WhatsApp. Now they are trying to convince their users. Some authors have written about policies of different website which we accept by going through them all. It's a fact. I think nobody reads all terms and conditions and privacy policies.

    From Feb 15 onward the Whats app is going to be the paid app and that would not be free anymore. That means a business angle has added to the famous app which is now taken over by the Facebook. It is becoming increasingly clear that many are using the whats app for the out station calls for free and the Facebook does not want to extend this facility for free. And India wants to be self reliant even in social media and thus want everyone to connect to the desi app called signal and that would be used more in future. Let us see what changes are envisaged in the future for the Whats app.

    If the social media started charging fee for their services, I am sure, they will lose their present business and the customers using the service would be reduced to 1/3rd.

    As long as we don't exchange any illegal or secret business messages. we need not worry about our privacy.
