India vs England Second Test - what a farce!

The second Test match between India and England has turned out to be really farcical. A Test match to be played over at least four days, if not the full five days, has fizzled out into a mini-one-dayer, looks like. Some are critical of the pitch itself. The spanking new stadium awed many, but is it that the infrastructure was the primary focus and the core 22 yards was pushed to the background? Or is that the playing 11 of both teams need to get back to the drawing board and learn the techniques of Test cricket? Single digits dominate like rain drops on the scoreboard across all the innings.

Keep in mind that the next Test and all the T20 games after that will be played at the same venue. Will those also become a farce? We enjoyed the superb contest Down Under. Those were truly some of the best Test matches. So what do you think went wrong here?

As mentioned by the author many people are criticising the pitch. But the legend player Sunil Gavaskar said that on the same pitch in the same test two players made half-centuries. He said that that will show that runs can be made on this pitch also. The batsmen should go to the net and practice how to play defence. Hitting and getting out is not the type of play for a test match. We have seen players like Gavaskar, Tendulakar, Dravid etc. who played excellent test cricket. But the present players are in a hurry to make runs and get out. They have to learn how to defend themselves.

As mentioned that the 3rd test match was concluded as a mini one-dayer and wrapped the hope of the England of test WTC 21. The 3rd test had many things, 1st- the pitch, 2nd- the miserable batting of both sides, 3rd - Excellent bowling by Joe Root, Axer Patel & Ashwin, 4th - Records - for Joe Root(Test-best figures with a remarkable haul of 5 for 8 in 6.2 overs), Axar Patel(Test-best figures with a remarkable haul of 6 for 38 in 21.4 overs) and Ashwin(400 wickets in his 77th Test), 5th- The fastest wrap-up of a test i.e. within 2 days.

The top 4 countries in the ICC World Test Championship point table is as follows:
    1. India with 490 points in 6 series. Won - 11, Lost - 4, and Drawn - 1
    2. NZ with 420 points in 5 series. Won - 7, Lost - 4, and Drawn - 0
    3. Austalia with 332 points in 4 series. Won - 8, Lost - 4, and Drawn - 2
    4. England with 442 points in 6 series. Won - 11, Lost - 6, and Drawn - 3

Varghese - This thread is not one related to stats about the matches. It is to discuss the possible reasons for why a Test match got wrapped up within two days.

Some cricketers are blaming the pitch, while others have laid emphasis on the ability of players to adapt to any kind of field and general settings, in this case playing under LED lights and with the pink cherry. As mentioned by Dr. Rao, a Test match does involve defensive batting. It seems the slam-bang shots of IPL and T20 formats of the game have seeped into the mindset of players. They need to change their approach to the game when playing in a five-day game. Definitely boundaries and sixes are part of a Test match also, but let these fit into the playing conditions, analyze how to approach the bowling attack in the longer format of the game, learn the wait-and-watch technique and try to acquire the acumen of Test batting legends. If matches like this one get played out once too often, one fine day Test matches will only be part of cricket's history.

Most of the players know the difference of approach in test matches versus one day matches and such a thing normally would not happen. This appears to be very unprecedented in its nature and the players have to ponder over and take it seriously so that the test match is to be played with the grace that we have witnessed so often.
    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
