Patient has the right to know the disease- agree or not

Many a time the family doctor or the house holds, do not reveal the actual disease of the patient and try to keep him or her in cheerful mood but somewhere the patient feels that he is shown more care because of unwell. Now the modern science has developed and even the patients are ready to face the challenges of life. They should be informed about the disease and what precautions should be taken without getting it aggrevated. Do you agree that the patient has the right to know about his disease instead of sulking inside ?

A patient has the right to know about the ill health he is having. But some patients will be having a lot of fear and when they come to know about the disease he has he will become very anxious and mentally get deprived. That will never be good for him. My father is 86 years old. He is worried about any small problem of health also. He will become very nervous and that will make him sicker and he can't recover fast. With such people nothing wrong if we never tell them about the actual problem. We have to downplay the issue and see that he will be normal. We have to see that he uses all the medicines properly and take all the precautions. The doctor will tell the health problem of the patient to the family members of the patient. It is his family members who have to decide about telling the patient or not.
In the good interest of the patient only, either the doctor or the family members may not inform the actual condition to the patient. I feel nothing wrong with that.

But by down playing the real disease are we not denying the patient his right to know what is happening to his health?

The doctors are under the impression that revelation of the disease with which the patient is suffering is not be told if the same is of serious nature. It is due to the fact that such declarations could result in severe blow to the patients and they may even loose their mental balance. If the patient is suffering from Blood Cancer, Hepatitis or Alzheimer Disease etc, he would certainly feel bad and this could become his additional strain.
Keeping them happy is the goal of the doctors and due to this fact any serious ailments are passed on to the guardian of the family. However, the doctors should not deprived of their basic rights and observing their mental conditions, they can expose their diseases and its severity.

If the goal of the doctors is to keep the patients happy then they should discharge them forthwith and that would send clearer signal.

Can a doctor tell his patient - This is what your disease suffering from and you may not live after so and so date. Doctors are here to save the life of the patients. Hence, they may not directly tell the patient about their diseases, but convey it in such a way that the patient doesn't lose heart and lose hope. But doctors should tell the fact to the guardian or the care taker of the patient. Moreover, in the present days, the patient themselves carry their medical record sheet that contains all the information relating to their ailments.

One of my distant relatives is suffering from COVID. She was in the hospital. Her husband was also a COVID patient and he was in a different hospital. Their children decided not to tell their parents about the health condition of the other partner. Similarly, they decided not to reveal their actual health condition. The doctors also advised the same. Now both are recovering well. The wife is very much worried about the husband's health condition and her children told her that their father is doing well and no problem. That made her get relieved from the stress and she is responding to the treatment positively. That way either doctors or family members will always try to do the best so that their family member will recover fast. That should be the attitude.

Sickness , especially, serious sickness affects the mind of the patient ,perhaps this is why he is not told about his sickness. Nowadays we have been listening that thousands of corona patients have died because of heart attack. Having been infected with coronavirus was a fatal information for them and they could not tolerate it and died.
The author wants that the patient should be told each and everything about his disease. I think only a few persons may be so much courageous that they will.not be affected.

I had a friend. He was teacher in a government school. He had died some years ago. He was a heart patient. Once he was not feeling well he went alone to Agra in a hospital. Doctor checked up and advised him to go under surgery at the earliest. He asked the doctor to do his operation then and there but he was alone , so doctor advised him to call his relatives but he insisted to go ahead and promosed him to sign on papers. However, the doctor did not go for surgery until his relatives had come.

Yes, I agree with the author, absolutely a patient has the right to know what ailment he has and this is the right way. When the patient keeps the information, he will also be more alert towards himself. Sure, there are some cases where the doctors do not share the complete information with the patient due to his age or mental fragility. In such cases, the family becomes more important, if the family member does not agree, then the doctor may not openly talk to the patient about the disease.

The patient has the right to know about the nature and cause of the disease. This may or may not help him. The doctors before the operation tell the patient or the attendant about the operation, the risks involved and take a signed letter of acceptance. These days because of the legal problems, they are asking an attendant to be present during operation. Unlike in the olden days, the patients are showing interest to learn the nature and cause of the disease. We can get the information on the net also. We can learn about the medicines prescribed, their uses, and their side effects by searching on the net. It is not advisable to resort to self-medication but knowing about the diseases and medicines is desirable.

Patient has full right over the disease and treatment given or to be given to him or her. No doubt. But will the patient in the mentality of controlling his or her mind freely or taking very normally? This is the reason many doctors and relatives are not telling full details to the patient. Many patients cannot control themselves when they fall sick. Recently I took one of my relative to a doctor for her giddiness. On cheking her blood pressure and other tests, the doctor told me, as an accompanying person that she is having Low BP as well slightly low oxygen level which can be cured with five days medicines. Really it is found normal and nothing to get panic. But this lady take this, by overhearing the doctor's words, got panic whether she could come in the purview of corona. Again I took her to the doctor's room and got clarified in her presence about the real condition. For avoiding such situations the patients are told clearly about their disease and treatment with full details. Not only the patients, but the surrounding people made the patient more panic and the seriousness of disease would go up.
