    16 Hour Fasting Technique and Our Ayurveda.

    As much important as the food, the more important is the time interval between meals and for this different method and time periods have been given. If we go to an allopathy doctor or ask a nutritionist, he/she will suggest that eat food at least 3 or 4 times a day and eat a little amount of food every time. If we talk about Ayurveda, then we should be eaten only twice, whose time should be around 10 in the morning and then at 7 in the evening. But we can see It is now a trend in many foreign countries that people are adopting the method of fasting for 16 hours, that is, after one meal, take the next meal only after at least 16 hours. Have you also adopted this fasting technique, is it really a good way? Please share your thoughts and experiences.

    In our traditional wisdom on life we were practising in a very purposeful and systematic way. It used to be engrained in our routine and we followed them just like a well wound clock.
    During my early years of childhood, I was staying with my maternal grandparents and had been following sch a good routine of fasting semi-fasting and even taking laxative for fully cleaning bowels in regular cycles.
    However all that is forgotten now.

    There were fixed menu time tables for each day of the week, each 'thith'i etc.
    (Thithi is a Lunar date in a fortnight period of Full Moon to New Moon and vice versa.)

    Certain ingredients and food items were avoided on certain days or thithis. Upvaas( regulated fasting) was prescribed for certain days or certain thithis. Now when we visit a doctor for an upset stomach he says it may be due to food poison , and advises us to avoid spicy, oily and heavy foods and take only rice gruel and buttermilk. That is a way to give rest to the digestive system and allow it to be back to normal after regaining strength.
    In earlier days,this same is implemented seemingly as part of prescribed routine, but really a prudent precaution and preventive measure scientifically known to our ancestors.

    Nowadays, many of our ancient traditional wisdom, (which we had abandoned for the sake of unhealthy modern lifestyle) , are marketed back to us for a price and under some brand.

    We also happily buy it for the price, as anything coming from western nations is attractive to us as a fad and fashion.

    Though the author suggestion seems to be new and good for implementation, those who are the diabetic patient and need to eat at regular interval some food or the other , keeping fasting for 16 hours would be impossible has effect on the health. How ever what we are doing daily is the same. We take the dinner at 8 pm and the morning break fast would be at 8 am. that means 12 hour fasting is registered already. But stretching the same for four more hours may not be advisable. But why we are getting hunger by 2 pm which is hardly 6 hours after break fast. May be our movements, brain wise thinking and doing some hard works in between would make the stomach to empty and ask for the sumptuous lunch. Unfortunately we cannot go for over eating during the office hours as we need to work for 6 hours more before returning home.

    The suggestion of the author of maintaining fast for sixteen hours seems to be difficult in the initial days but with the consistent practice, this can be implemented. This will even allow our digestion system to take enough rest as a result of stretching the meal hours. Indigestion occurs due to our overeating practice. In case, if we take adequate care of our liver by purging the toxins from our system in regular ways, we are allowing our livers to strengthen the same.
    However, taking two meals in a 24 hours cycle may not be good because the gap between the two meals is quite is beyond normal and this may create acidity within the system and this will have the adverse effect on the system. The advice of the doctors to take small meal every four hour is to eliminate the generation of excess acidity within the system.

    Even in many houses the system of taking meals by 10 to 10.30 am and tiffin in nights are in vogue. In cities because of the distance between home and working place the system totally changed. One doctor told me to have eating habit by 8-1-8 that is breakfast by 8.00 am, lunch 1.00 pm and dinner at 8.00 pm for better health. But many of us do not follow either having no time or by consuming snacks. tea/coffee at intervals. The advise of that doctor should be followed on any account by the persons of diabetic. In many factories the lunch hour is by 1.00 pm and most of the people working in factory type employment do have a good eating system. But in many offices I am seeing the people taking lunch by 2.00 pm and afterwards, One day When I reached Chennai railway station, went to a hotel for coffee but astonished to see that a person before me eating a good tiffin by that time, that is morning 5.15 am. Our people around us do not worry about their health and on the other hand too much worrying about their health by filtering the food items. That is what our elders told 'pasiththu pusi' that means eat only when you feel hungry. No animal eat as they please though they saw the food on their way but we human eat whenever we see some items.

    Intermittent fasting is the concept. You eat whatever you can eat in between 8 hours only. After that, for the next 16 hours, you should not consume anything. Whatever you want to eat, you should eat in that 8 hours only. This concept is getting popular these days. Many people who wanted to lose weight are trying to adopt this methodology. Take food for the first time at 11 AM. After that, you can have anything you want and your final meal for the day will be at 7 PM. Once you had your final meal you should not have any food till 11 AM the next day.
    My elder son and daughter in law are following this system for the last month and they say they have lost weight. No breakfast for them in the morning. Luch at 11 AM and dinner at 7 PM. In between, they may have some fruits. This is the system they are following. It is believed that this pattern may have good control over blood sugar.

    Our grand parents used to fast on every Shravanam, every Ekadasi and every Pournami. All these three days comes in a month and that means by giving the overhauling to body through fasting, they stayed strong and committed to life. But these days we are eating for everyday and there is no time gap followed and thereby giving no rest to the mouth, stomach or digesting. Added to it we are also eating junk food which has larger effect on the health. So having fasting at least for a day in a week would have good effect positively on our health.

    Some people habitually eat something or the other throughout the day, it is an unhealthy habit that also has negative effects on health. This pattern is normal in children, but with age, people should end this habit of eating something all the time.
