Are we denied enjoying a clear night sky amid too much artificial lighting?

Over the past decade, the public lighting system has gone through so many switchovers from ordinary tube lights to halogen lights which were more powerful, and now LED lights are making waves.

Only recently Hyderabad earned the name and fame for illuminating the entire 340 km of the outer right road with artificial night lighting and this brings the big question as to are we denied in enjoying a clear night sky amid too much artificial lighting? No doubt street lighting is more important on the city roads and not only the highways when the vehicles would beam with powerful lights. So the whole project seems to be a waste as per my view. Any comments?

Recently I was travelling on ORR and the lighting is so good that we can see the while atmosphere similar to day time only. Our vehicles require no separate light lightening and you can travel very happily. But all the areas are not like that. There are no lights in some streets and some street roads are very bad also. However some attention is needed by the state government in preparing the roads.
Coming to the point of enjoying nature, ORR is not for seeing it in the nights are for enjoying the same as a scenic place. The very purpose is to see that the conditions of traffic in the city will be better if unnecessary vehicles are entering the city. That purpose is very well achieved and we are saving a lot of when we travel across the city.

A clear night sky is required by amateur astronomers who gaze at the night sky as a hobby. I was doing it during 1985-90 when I had picked up that hobby while residing in a small town in Gujarat where there were no dazzling lights around. Anyway, that is a specialised requirement and we cannot keep the place dark just because an amateur hobbyist wants the darkness to view the stars in the night sky. Thanks to the LED lights, we now have low consumption but yet keep the place glowing brightly. Electricity has converted the big cities and metros like daytime even in the night and that is the power of this great invention, namely, electricity.

Knowledge is power.
