Despite being an agricultural nation, various agricultural products are imported by India

India has a lot of agricultural lands and our main income is from the agricultural sector. But the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has revealed some facts that are not encouraging. 70% of the sunflower oil we use comes from Ukraine, 80% of wheat comes from Russia and many more agricultural products are being imported by India from different parts of the world. Isn't that a bad sign that we still depend on others for our food?

That is true. India is primarily an agriculture-based country and more than 50% of people live depending on the agriculture sector. India is the 2nd largest producer of rice in the world and we have sufficient stocks of rice in India as per the government records. India is the highest producer of milk in the entire world. The poultry industry is coming up very fast these days. Sugar cane is another product that is produced in India and the quality of Indian Sugar cane is the best across the world. Guavas and mangoes are also very popular and produce a major portion of the world's production.
That way I feel India is increasing its productivity. There may be some exports of the products that are mentioned above. But India is a very thickly populated country and the requirements may be huge. So as mentioned by the author there may be some imports and the country is not self-sufficient in all items. Maybe some are exported and some are imported.

Very good question posed by the author. In India we have varied types of soils which are used for different crops and different produces and therefore India cannot suffice the demands of agri products. For example Punjab is the wheat producing state but we cannot suffice the needs of the people and therefore need to import. And one more problem we face with the Indian farmers that they keep on producing the same product in the region and thereby so scope for new produce and therefore India had to import even pulses from other countries. One thing is sure, when the country is big, when the agriculture produce and varied and fetching export orders, its give and take policy in the agriculture sector since long years and not that we are dependent on Russia and Ukraine from recent past. Now that the war is going on we are digging our inefficiency.

Previously I had very strong belief because of my sources of educational books, print, electronic media, India has a stronghold or fort on the Agriculture sector but now that is said to be marred by the recent fact check.....

India is having good production of some of the agricultural commodities but not all the commodities. So we export what we produce more and import what we produce less. The whole international trade is thriving on that premises only. Another point is that today the farmer has become very selective in producing a particular crop and will switch to another one if he gets a better price for it. So that also affects the overall production of a particular item. Our population is so huge that if our production of some item is below the threshold level then we will have to import that item from outside to meet the demand of this huge population. So it is very true that we are an agricultural country but from where we can bring various types of grains and pulses to fulfill the demand of 130 crore people.
