Umbrellas do not remain with me for some reason or the other

The rainy season has started in different parts of India and Bangalore where I live is not an exception. Carrying an Umbrella is a must for everyone during the monsoon. I also carry it when need to go out in the rain due to some errands. The tragedy is that I have lost a countable number of them because when I had reached the destination the rain would have stopped and I might have left them at the shopping place or on the seat of a bank. Furthermore, my maids always come to work without carrying an umbrella and after they finish their work when it starts raining, they take my umbrella and never return it. The other day, it was raining and I had to step out of the house. It was quite obvious that I had none of the umbrellas which had been with me earlier.

This year I will buy an umbrella and make a resolution that I will zealously guard my umbrella and make sure that when I go out with it, I come back with it too. Moreover, I would lend my umbrella to my maid with a condition that the first thing she should have in her hand when she comes the next day to work should be my umbrella.

Have you ever lost your umbrella? How many of them do you have?

Umbrellas are the necessity and at the same time most forgotten item for many who carry them and invariably forget at the place of work or worship and thus after return back there it is already stolen and nothing can be done. Due to this reason many does not want to carry umbrellas at all. My daughter and wife has the habit of forgetting the umbrella and thus I made the point that I would accompany them to the destination and carry back the umbrella with me. For me there is always a habit to check the things before leaving any place or the seat and that ensures me what ever taken with me would carried and not missed. Many a time my wife has left the umbrella in the auto and the driver would return to us when he came back on our route. But I have seen that many people lost the umbrellas for one reason or the other and there can be story book written.

Haha, it brought a smile to my face while reading your entire thread the way you brought it out your story.
Yes, during the rainy season if we need anything important to carry with us, it is an umbrella. You must feel easy to know that you are not alone in losing umbrellas. It is a big issue with me too or like many people like me when they search umbrella at home and find none during the rainy season. It is compulsory for me to buy a new umbrella every year and if I lost that, then another new one. You have no other option but to buy a new one. As you said, this is very peculiar but true that when we return back and there is no rain, we often forget the umbrella to carry back. I do travel local train, autos and often I forget my umbrella to take it back. Last year, I bought a news umbrella, and thankfully I still have it with me hopefully this time will make sure that it should not get lost.

It is very common in many families. We also lost many umbrellas the way you have lost. I used to keep an umbrella in my car always and when was there in the office, my colleagues who know that there will be an umbrella in my care used to take it to go out when it was raining and they may keep it somewhere in the office after coming back as it will be wet and I used to forget recollecting it back. Sometimes I could be able to trace it back but sometimes it was getting vanished. Now I stopped carrying an umbrella in the car and if necessary I will try to manage it from somebody else.
My sons go by two-wheeler. So they carry raincoats and the chances of losing them are less. But the chances of losing an umbrella are very high. I think we have two umbrellas in our house and we may not go for the new one this year. Another factor is my servant maid is staying in a room in our house itself and hence there is no necessity for us now to give an umbrella to her.

Actually I hesitate to hold an umbrella due to laziness. Moreover when I was in service, every year I took an umbrella to office and lost during the rainy season, some how or other. Later when I started to go with my senior in scooter I took raincoat with me and safely returned to home without the raincoat as in the evening there was no rain. On returning home only I realized this and bring back on the next day.
My wife took umbrella with her whenever she goes out irrespective of rainy or sunny days and bring back carefully.
My father was not at all using slippers and umbrella since many years but after my wife's compulsion only he started to have slippers and umbrella whenever going out, only from his 75th years of age.
Presently as I feel trouble in crossing the road with umbrella I stop taking umbrella with me.

It is very common to lose an umbrella during the rainy season and many people have bought the second one immediately after losing the first one. I also had the same experience earlier in my life but later I started wrapping it in a plastic bag and keeping it in my handbag which I usually took with me when I went out. After doing that I did not lose any umbrella and some of my friends started following the same practice. I have found that generally when we carry something in hand instead of keeping it in a bag or pocket the chances of it getting left at some place we visited are very high. So it is advisable to keep things either in some bag or keep them somehow attached to our body. Some people have a habit of checking things before leaving a place but everyone is not so alert and loses the items often.

Just recently I visited an old office colleague and left my umbrella in his office! Luckily I happened to be in the same building visiting somebody else whom I knew when he called to inform me about it, so I was able to go back and pick it up. Generally, though, I don't forget the umbrella perhaps because I use it frequently, in the sense that due to extreme heat I carry it along when going to the market even. So when shopping I tuck it under my arm or put it in my shopping bag and on the rare occasion that I did leave it behind in a shop, I am aware of it after a while on stepping out into the hot sunshine.

It is possible that forgetting an umbrella somewhere is common because it is something bulky and we tend to simply place it down on a shop's counter or on a chair where we wait, such as in the bank as mentioned by Niharika.

Yesterday I went to buy a new umbrella and asked the shopkeeper to give me the lowest priced umbrella in his shop. The reason I told him was that I had misplaced my umbrella a few days ago. I became aware of the loss itself after a few days after I actually lost it. So I cold not go tracing it. Thus I wanted a cheap umbrella to prevent more risk.
But I did not like the lowest cost umbrella and then bought another one costing Rs290/-.

In previous years also I had lost my umbrellas. I had lost them travelling in bus. But on a couple of occasions I could get the misplaced umbrella back back as I had misplaced them in autorickshaws and could immediately follow up with familiar auto drivers.

A few points about umbrellas -

    1. One can become rich by floating an insurance policy for lost umbrellas, though it is doubtful if people will buy such a policy when they think twice about buying even a term policy.

    2. There are more chances of losing wet umbrellas during monsoons than dry umbrellas used to protect from sun rays during summers.

    3. In Mumbai, one can get half-price second-hand umbrellas from the local train ticket-selling staff as many people lose their umbrellas at the ticket window while buying tickets during monsoons.

    4. As far as lending is concerned, people should guard umbrellas like spouses.

Let us encourage each other in sharing knowledge.
