    Your nostalgia associated with December

December has already arrived. One more year is going to end. December is a month with a cold climate almost all over the world. Some areas, especially in US and Europe, experience heavy snowfall and countries like India will have a reasonably cold climate. Most of the western countries will be busy and they will be in a holiday mood after December 15th. Christmas and New year celebrations are in December and I am sure all of our members will have some nostalgic feelings about December. In fact, I am sure that many of us have a feel that December is a special month than other months.

Please share your memories and nostalgic feelings about December in this thread.

As per Hindu Calendar in South India Margasirsha month will be going on during this month of December. Dhanurmasa will start. This month is very auspicious and Lord Vishnu's favourite month. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna told Arjuna that He himself is Margasirsha and it is like a head to a human being.

Generally, My birthday as per the Hindu calendar will be coming in the month of December only. So I have a special liking for this month. Christmas is celebrated this month and my favourite Politician in India. Our Ex-Prime Minister Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday is on 25th December. That way the month of December is special to me.

Another important event in my life also took place in the month of December only. I received a selection letter for CSIR Scholarship for doing my research in the month of December only. I even remember the date. That is 20th December 1978. I joined for my Ph.D. on 1st January 1979.

The nostalgia relates to my Kid and student days.
From Nov mid to December end is the Sabarimala season in Kerala. So December falls in the peak time of Sabarimala pilgrimage. In our place, the local temple is of Swami Ayyappa- Dharmasastha. So the 'Mandalam' season is very important and a 41 day festive time.

Those were the days before the TV and computer days. The local festivals were well celebrated by all people irrespective of religious differences. Each day celebration (and also the essential temple rituals) were sponsored by individuals or organizations.

The degree of celebration and festivity increases with each day. There used to be performances like music, dance, drama, ballet, Kathakali, Ottanthullal, Chaakiar koothu and many such varieties including folk arts and modern theater arts. There used to be temple processions with caparisoned elephants numbering seven, accompanied with the wind and percussion instruments like Nagaswaram, panchavaadyam etc.

Temporary pandals and shops used to be there and that used to be major occasion for girls and women to buy fancy items like glass bangles etc and also for kitchen items. For boys and children we used to buy balls, mouth organs, various type of balloons and toys. We used to get some money from our parents to buy these and also candies, ice sticks and roasted ground nuts.

On every day for 41 days (if possible ) or at least on every Saturday, we were taken to the temple at 4.30 am to witness the 'Abhishekam'. Every evening we were taken to temple for the Deeparadhana ("Aarati') and allowed to roam around there for some time playing and chatting with our friends and getting new friends. By the third week of December our Christmas exams would be over and we would be given Christmas holidays. Then we would be taken for the entertainment programs. While our elders watched the Kathakali etc, we used to doze off in any free place near them. They would wake us up in between and give us warm black coffee and/or something to eat.

Then the Christmas Carol days. We all used to participate and enjoy all these. Last but not the least, the cool weather and occasional breeze and rain drizzle! What majestic days those were!

I cannot express all those in words now. Those were just feelings of excitement. Never to return ever. So, just nostalgia.

Christmas is always a special time of year in December. The entire month of December is wonderful. the season's glistening lights, chillier evenings, and fresh morning breeze. Everywhere you turn, you will see Christmas decorations. Such a joyful sight to watch. We used to celebrate our nearby church feast days on the 25th and 26th of December when I was younger in my hometown. Processions, fireworks, elaborate feasts, and colorful cultural programs would be held. These events are notable for bringing a unique Kerala flavor into rituals embraced by Christians all over the world. Elephants, band sets, and chenda would be part of the cultural programs because my hometown is Thrissur, Kerala's cultural capital and the land of festivals. It is delightful to hear the rhythm of Singarimelam in chenda with the escort of an elephant. And a band set consists of about ten or twelve members who perform various songs on musical instruments such as Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Mellophone, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophones, various types of drums, and so on. It's nostalgic for me because I had to relocate for a job.
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."
