When you got first wrist watch

Wrist watch usage was a rare one in olden days and it was only used by rich persons. Later in the middle period from 1960 it become a common one among many. In that period it is very rare in ladies to wear wrist watch. Tamil cinema actress Saroja Devi used to wear a square type wrist watch in her films and so, the ladies started to buy and use that type of watches.

When I passed my Graduation examination in 1977, my father bought a watch for me. That brand was 'Favor Leuba'. Though I do not aware the brands of watches, I felt proud on my father's gift. Later during 1985, in our company we organized meeting of Marketing Personnel and planned to gift them with HMT watches. When I went to buy for that meeting, I suddenly thought of my father and bought one HMT watch for him and gave to him. Really I felt happy to see his happy face on seeing that watch, though he afford to buy many watches.

But recently the wrist watch users are very less. When we started using mobile phones, many of us do not go anywhere without mobile phone and avoid usage of watches as we can see time in mobile phones.

Having a watch on the wrist was a style in those days. Everybody used to have a wristwatch. Rich people used to wear very costly watches. Those days that is the only device to know the time.
I purchased my first writs watch when I was in my intermediate. I was to travel on a bus to go to college and come back. The cost of the ticket was 40 paise. So my father used to give me one rupee per day to go to college. 80 paise for the bus tickets and 20 paise for snacks. Sometimes I used to travel by bicycle with my friend and whatever savings was there, that I used to keep in a box. By the time I completed my first-year of intermediate I could save Rs.80/-.I purchased a smuggled watch and I used the same for a long time.
My elder son gifted me a watch purchased from his first salary. A very costly watch and I used it for 10 years. Recently that watch stopped working and I received a watch as a gift form a friend and same is being used by me as of now.

This post has evoked a lot of my childhood memories. When I was in my high school in the year 1966 then my father told me that if I got first division in the exam then he will gift me a wrist watch.
I was much excited on that proposition and was struggling hard with my studies to get a first division. At that time first division meant to score atleast 60% marks. By the grace of God I was able to secure more than 60% marks in my high school exam and as promised by him I got a wrist watch from my father. Many of my classmates who did not have wrist watch were also much excited after seeing a wrist watch on my wrist. Many of them asked me what was the time I obliged them by telling the time at that moment. It was a very quality watch and I had it for many years and it gave a very good service. I still remember that it required very less maintenance and worked perfectly.

    Knowledge is power.

I got my first wristwatch oy when I entered college. It had a dark blue dial which was in fashion those days with a black strap. Although it is not with me I still remember it. I used to wear it every day to college. Now also I have special watch but I don't use it because I take my mobile phone with me when I go out.

First wristwatch may get when we are approaching 10th standard. This is the common scenario for all. My first watch also got when I was in 9th standard. My uncle brought it from Dubai. It was my favorite for many years before it got damaged. I didn't remember the brand name of the watch, but it was so beautiful to bring comments from my friends and even teachers.

In my school days, I was very much fascinated with bright looks of different watches. I was in class ten those days and my uncle promised me to have a nice watch from popular brands. But he had specifically told me to show the better results in class ten so that he could gift me a watch from a premier company. I could not resist my temptation of having the watch with my struggles with studies and finally I was gifted with an attractive watch made from Swiss looking really dazzling. He told me that this gift would make me more punctual with my studies with the distribution of timing for each subjects. I did not frustrate him with securing around 70 %marks in my Bihar School Examination Board and those days achieving so much marks from the said board was not so easy.

After my marriage only I start wearing watch. My wife gifted me. This is my sweet memory and carrying now also. After that I used to wear watch regularly. As a marketing guy I feel, wearing watch gives me an esthetic look. It increases my overall personal look.

Once upon a time it was luxury. Now ranges are available for child also.

I started wearing a real wrist watch from my college days(11th class then). It was one used by one of my relatives who gave i to me when he got anew on. The watch was small and as the fashion at that time was large dial watches, I discontinued it after using for some months. Then on day my paternal uncle took me to a watch shop and bought me a Favre Leuba watch which was a popular brand and model then. I continued with it as long as I could and till it became unfeasible to get repaired. Then I bought a Titan golden dial watch which was a sort of premium watch at that time. This I loved and used for a few years, but sadly untraceably lost it somehow. Then I went on without waring a watch, using mobile phone for the purpose also. Then I got a compliment from my employer on completion of twenty five years in service. That was again a golden colour premium watch from Citizen. I am still having the watch and wear it whenever needed

I had mentioned these in my response #746166 in this thread.
