It is very difficult to change the preconceived views of some people

Probably many of us might have experienced it. Sometimes even after spending a lot of time to impress upon someone that their opinion on a particular issue is wrong, they will not get convinced. Even if your argument may be airtight and you might have come out with very clear examples also, they will not change their opinion. They stick to the preconceived view on that particular matter and they never come out of that shell. They take that view based on their emotions and their earlier experiences

The problem with preconceived notions is that they may lead people to very negative and critical beliefs. So it is better not to go for any discussion with a preconceived notion and one should keep an open mind. I like to know the opinions of other members on this issue.

The preconceived views will be there for the person who is saying them also. Say for example Every Indian will tell Indians are great where ever they go they are highly respected is a preconceived view from Indians. If a person raises a doubt that Indians are also in Somalia, Indonesia, and Zimbabwe where the country sinks into the entire poverty is it because of the Indian population? then the person who wants to hail India says you are in a preconceived view we can't change you. Next, the Indian fan says Indian cricketers are great Sachin is God, Virat is a demi-god, and Gavaskar and Kapil dev are another levels of the species then if a person will say Why Indians lost more matches against Pakistan the Indian fan will say you are in preconceived view we can't change. Now Coming to China daily we see the Indian newspapers saying China lost many companies and they are financially deteriorating but the reality is China's Yuan value is stable and the Indian rupee is deteriorating even with Bangaladesh India is having less GDP the person who wants to support India with his preconceived views will not get changed and will not accept the reality they want to find something to defend them. In IPL cricket foreign cricketers have sold out for whooping money if Indian cricketers are great then why not they make or play IPL franchises with domestic teams... Why they are giving such minted money to foreign players?

I agree with you, Bhushan. Nobody is exempted from this. Everyone will have some preconceived ideas on some issues and it is very difficult for anybody to change them.

Why argue with such people for a long time? Things change at random and so do our experiences on matters. Preconceived ideas are based only on certain assumptions that some people keep close to their hearts. Emotions are attached to it and there, logic has no place. After talking to such people for some time you will know that many of their ideas are based only on some beliefs. Before changing the ideas the thoughts have to be changed which may not be that easy. It is better not to argue with such people.

Who is correct only by seeing history and records will tell, reality can't tamper with and it will be the same as it is, So even preconceived views argue also we can show them this is reality ... by facts and figures... Even if he doesn't change it is his karma no one can do anything. ..

There are many people who are having preconceived notions about various things and they will remain stick to that thinking. If we argue with them and try to convince them they will become stubborn and many times behave in an aggressive way also.
Such people are actually very adamant and generally will never change their views.
Another tendency that is very common with such people is that whenever you talk to them in a group or in presence of other people they will be very much adament and stubborn as mentioned above but sometimes when they talk with us alone on one to one basis then they will agree for many things and sometime they will request us for some favour also which will be totally against their talks. So these people have a dual character as they will have one face in the society and another when they are alone with someone.

There are any number of examples to show that people do not have pre-conceived opinions without any basis, but what they see as objective facts.

A relatively recent phenomenon relates to rather horrible events in Tamil Nadu. The State chief of a major National party wore a watch that he claimed to be manufactured from the spare parts of the Rafale war planes. He went to the ridiculous extent of claiming that he was a true patriot and that he was proud of his patriotism.

This was in wide public view in a press conference. It was even alleged that he had prompted the interviewer to ask him a question about his watch, through perfect stage Management. This person, who claimed that he was a humble farmer with a few goats and a couple of cows, was immediately challenged by members of the ruling party in Tamil Nadu to produce the receipt for his watch. He was not able to produce any receipt. Worse, it is now being traced to a gift received from the owners of the Cafe Coffee Day brand, when this person was a IPS officer in Karnataka.

Almost all of us do entertain preconceived views on something or the other at some point of time. That, I think, is quite natural and cannot be termed as a negative trait. It becomes negative only when the person holding such a view is obstinate. Preconceived views are fine so long as you are willing to change the same on being convinced that you were wrong.

It is futile to argue with people who hold on to their views even after being confronted with facts and evidence. Such people are irrational and will keep on beating around the bush even if they realize their mistake. They choose to be frogs in the well. It is better to leave them to the four walls rather than wasting your time and energy.

It becomes really difficult to change the attitudes of the adamant persons. They are guided with their own ideas and would not like to change the same. If we try to convince such people, they would not hear and the problem as usual has remained the same. In case, we have lot of times for negotiations with such people, we can try but for most of us have the time constraints. We cannot leave our pending assignments due to such people having their adamant attitudes. Time is equally important and instead of indulgence with egoistic people, constructive activities should be taken up for both progress and peace of mind.

Spiritually speaking, instead of correcting others we can correct ourselves.

A big shot in one place changed everything in his house into green color as one Vastu person told him to see only green color daily. A relative who came there told him instead of changing everything to green color he could wear a green color spectacle. It is true sometimes only as we cannot live without depending on others. In such situations, our minds is adjusting or compromise when others go wrong. As told by the author if others are going in the wrong way, we cannot tolerate their wrong going if they are our close persons.

Preconceived or not, it is difficult to change the opinions of most people in general. In fact, it is true for almost everyone, including, us. At times we too latch on to certain preconceived notions and hold on to them till the last. That is why during arguments and group discussions at ISC as well, we see everyone sticking to their opinion and refusing to change their stance even when bombarded with a barrage of arguments against it. However, everyone is not of the same temperament, and someone may be more obstinate than others. When faced with such extreme persons, before getting into an argument with them, it is better to remember the fate of the bird in the story where a bird and a monkey were bosom friends. The monkey had this preconceived notion that a fire can be lit by taking help of a firefly. The bird tries to reason with his friend, but to no avail. At last, fed up with the bird's non-stop reasonings, the monkey ultimately grabs hold of his friend and bangs it on the ground, resulting in the death of the bird.
    Patience and perseverance pays
