General category may be introduced in the Parent Category of India.

We are all aware that when we open a new thread on this site we have to select the parent category and category relevant to our thread. India is one of the Parent categories. When we select India as the parent category, there are some options in the category section from which we have to select.
In that category section, I feel there should be an option called General. As of now all the names of the states, Politics, Central Government, State elections, foreign affairs and elections are the options available.

Sometimes we may be opening threads that are general in nature but pertaining to India only. In such cases, this General category may come in handy. Otherwise, we have to use General and miscellaneous only. Already elections category is existing. So the state elections category can be removed and the general category can be introduced. This a small suggestion from my side. The think tank of ISC can consider if they feel the suggestion is useful.

I feel author has made a good suggestion and it will help the members posting anything of general category under the main India category.
The suggestion has to get ISC acceptance and then they have to see the technical feasibility of doing that as it would require changes to be made at the code level.

As far as I think, the suggestion offered by the author is worthwhile and this suggestion should go well with most of members.A slight modification is to take place where general category is to be replaced by India Category.
We would like to know the opinions of the rest of members in this regard.

Dr Rao,

The category of Elections is a separate one from that of State Elections because the former is for elections related at the Central level. It can also be used to discuss elections that take place at the college/university level. Members can continue to use the General category-Miscellaneous sub-category for anything else.

Nevertheless, let us know which topics you have in mind that would create the necessity to make a new category under the India main category.

Some cultural aspects of India, food habits of Indians in different parts of the country and economic conditions and living standards of people in different states etc, are some I thought. Anyhow it is up to the administration of ISC to take a call.

Dr. Rao,

I suggest that if there is a topic related to cuisine or culture that is exclusive to a specific State, you could select the category of the particular State in the same way that we have had threads about tourists or other landmarks of a State. Economic conditions if related to a Central/State Govt. policy can accordingly be put in the category of Central Govt./whichever State it is related to. If it is about general economic conditions and living standards and not directly related to a government policy, let's stick with the miscellaneous category. I recall once the admin. had stated that they did not want any more categories when a member had requested one related to science and technology. This would be their stand even more so now since they want to make this portal an exclusive one for education-related content only.

Note that the unique categories created for the forum at the social village portal will encompass myriad topics and I sincerely hope it will attract great participation! Once that site is ready (we just had an initial few days of the trial of the forum), the admin. will let us know.
