Why do some people become beggars?

There are various ways to earn money. People with self-respect find out some way or other to earn a living and never opt for stretching their hands to others for money. Even people with disability find out jobs and work hard.

Unfortunately, some beggars are healthy enough to work but do not feel ashamed to ask for money. That does not mean that I am criticizing the beggars. It is their choice. Since my childhood, I have been trying to find out the reason for their choice of not working.

Do you know any genuine reasons? If so, please present it.

In most cases, begging is not a choice but a compulsion. Downtrodden and poor people in society generally go for this mode of earning. Some of them can earn a good amount and remain glued to this profession. In our society, many people can afford to donate some amount to these beggars and these beggars are surviving on that premise only. These beggars are generally lazy and inactive and just sit at a place and beg from morning to evening.

Some of them can work also instead of begging but once they are accustomed to the lazy and inactive life they don't try for any work even if it is available to them. These beggars generally sit near religious places or tourist places where people don't bother to spare a few rupees for them.
This situation can only change when all the people stop giving anything to these beggars for free and instead help them to get a job or help in rehabilitating them in some workplace.

    Knowledge is power.

Spiritually speaking we may say their praraptha karma.
There are people who become beggars due to the happenings in their family life.
Some normal earners spend lavishly and borrow more money from outsiders . Due to their inability of repaying the debts the come to street as beggars.
On the other hand, some people do not want to work any work and thereby opt begging on streets.
But it is pity to note some beggars do not come out of the circle though their level somewhat comes up.

I feel begging is the last choice for any individual on this earth. As far as possible one should try to earn his bread. Begging somebody may kill the self-respect of the individual. Many of us feel shy when we have to ask for a loan from an individual.

In cities, begging is also controlled by a mafia. The poor people give their kids for rent to this gang and they give the parents some money. These kids will be posted in the area and they have to go on begging. The money got by these kids will go to that gang only. We can understand how cruel some people are, they are doing business with the poverty of some people.

As a matter of fact, we should not encourage begging. If the beggar is an old person or physically handicapped, then we can help them But we should not give help to young and healthy people who go begging because of their laziness.

Begging is not a compulsion but a choice of the beggars where they find there is no resistance from any corner for such kind of profession. They need to choose convenient places to raise money and they know from their experiences which could be the best place to provide them huge money. They would concentrate on famous temple locations or some tourist places to generate money. There are ways to get huge money if they choose some respectable professions but they would not come out of their shells due to their laziness.

We need to take some serious steps not to donate money to such beggars who are otherwise fit and healthy. If such a step is taken by all, it would definitely create an impact on them.

I do not encourage begging. Its now become mafia business we are watching daily that 6 to 12 year kids also begging on railway station and full family doing the same thing. What lesson they will give to future people of his family. I really feel sad if I see if he or she able to work then why they begging but I think its easy earning resource and get money without doing hard work so they ,can not change his life but we can discourage them to leave this this and not give any money to them. Only give to people who not able to work and very old. You do not know how your money will be used .

Humans are of various types and characters. Their situations and experiences vary.

While I pray God forbid anyone becoming a beggar, I may say that there are many factors which contribute to one becoming a beggar. All over the world there were and are beggars though their number and severity differs .

Not forgetting that there are some people who exploit the naïve and good natured kind humans and have developed begging to a business, most others become beggars due to compulsions and the lack of adequate societal and governmental measures to help and protect the weakest and most vulnerable.

Doling out a few coins to a beggar may be an easy and temporary measure to satisfy our inherent urge of helping the poor, but it will only keep him in the same state unless a permanent solution to his poverty is done. Governments and NGOs and philanthropists are doing a lot in this regard. NIL unemployment (though a utopia as of now) can make begging almost nil. Ensuring the availability of the three basic essentialities to a human life- Food, Clothing, and shelter- can reduce begging to a large extent. Governments, NGOs and philanthropic individuals and corporate CSR are doing a lot in this regard. If the employment rate and social welfare measures are increasing at a good pace, we can hope that begging will come to an end. Meaningful and practical rehabilitation along with proper deterrence measures can help reduce begging to a large extent. However uneven, illogical, unproductive and uncontrolled doles and freebies also can destroy the work culture and encourage laziness and begging.

Though said in a lighter vein "Begging is a business where capital is not necessary, turnover is profit and no tax'' has a lot of meaning and hints.
