Can all regional parties think of becoming national parties?

There are 2858 parties registered in India as per the Election Commission of India. Among these parties, are 9 national parties, 54 state parties and 2796 unrecognized parties. In fact out of these 9 national parties also, we see only two parties active. They are BJP and the Indian National Congress. CPI and CPM parties were considered National parties. But they lost their significance.

Many regional parties are active these days. TDP. DMK. AIDMK. BRS, YSR Congress and AIADMK are some regional parties. Some of these regional parties seeing their success in their States wanted to become National parties. TDP party founder eyed for the Prime Minister post and lost his ground in the State. Similarly, these days KCR, the chief of TRS eyed for the PM post and converted his TRS party to BRS. A lot of criticism he is facing within the party now. I don't know how much success he will attain.

Many other regional party chiefs are also aspiring for the PM post. Against this backdrop is it good to think of converting regional parties to national parties and if so, what may be the success rate? I request members to come out with their opinions.

The regional parties can think of becoming national parties and they can become national parties after fulfilling the criteria laid down by the Election Commission of India. The interesting thing is if those regional parties do not have a significant presence throughout the country but get the recognition of a national party by fulfilling only the minimum criteria then it can lose its recognition in the very next assembly/parliamentary elections. A regional party fulfilling any of the following criteria can be considered a national party.

    1. It should have a minimum of four MPs in the last concluded parliamentary elections coupled with a vote share of 6% of the valid votes in at least four states in the last concluded parliamentary/assembly elections.
    2. The regional party has to be recognized in at least four states.
    3. It must win at least 2% of the total parliamentary constituencies (Lok Sabha seats) in a minimum of three states.

If the regional party has the aspiration they can do it but in many cases, it is found that they wish to concentrate on regional politics only and play a crucial role when the party ruling the centre requires support either to stay in power or to pass a bill when they do not have the required numbers.

This is an interesting topic. Regional parties are generally successful within a region because they are successful in coming up to the expectations of the local people by resolving the local issues. The problem with the regional parties is that as soon as they lose touch with the local people they lose the local seats and so they should be very careful in safeguarding their local interests as well as get support of local people fully.
Regional parties can come up on the national canvas only in one condition when they start showing their interests in that broad manner and start talking about country and national level issues. They will have to be continuously involved not only in national but also in international issues.
It requires a strong leadership for achieving such an objective and very few leaders in regional politics are having that type of capability and aptitude.

Regional parties are aware of the needs of the local people and are fulfilling their expectations to their best. In that way, they are getting success. The another important aspect for the success of such parties can be attained if the people see that there is no difference of opinion of the individual members and they do demonstrate the same philosophy. This will strengthen the confidence of the voters in such parties. Regional parties cannot be successful as National Parties unless they have wide horizons and can exert influence on the people of tacking health care, education and least deviation of prices of the essential commodities across the different places. This would require huge organisers to create impact in the different places. The whole exercise needs patience and consistency in their approach.
