Tomorrow we will be watching the match between India and Spain by this time almost. Team India was number one in Hockey and won medals many times. But in between cricket has taken a front seat. But hockey is always the favourite game of India,
India did well many times earlier. Let us hope and wish that in this tournament also India will take the lead. Odisha government is encouraging this sport and hopes that our team will stand up to the expectations of all of us and win. I wish them all the best.

All the best to the Men in Blue. Hope our team does well in this edition of the Hockey World Cup and brings glory to the country. It is a big thing that this time the world cup is being organised in India and that too in Odisha. The Odisha Government is lately taking a great interest in promoting the game of hockey in the country. With FIH President Tayyab Ikram acknowledging that one of the best hockey stadiums is now in Rourkela, no wonder Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is doing a lot to bring back the glory that the game of hockey once adorned the country with. The inaugural function was an elaborate one with the culture of Odisha in particular and the country, in general, at the forefront. Things got into motion with a superb dance performance by the famed Odissi dancer Guru Aruna Mohanty and her troop which was a big hit with the audience. 'Hockey hai dil mera' the anthem of this edition's world cup was performed live by composer Pritam and the eleven original singers of the song, followed up by other song and dance performances that reverberated and illuminated the evening sky in Cuttack. In all, it was a grand inaugural celebration. Interestingly, Olly the turtle is the mascot of the Hockey World Cup 2023, drawing attention to the sustained efforts by the state of Odisha in saving the habitats of the Olive Ridley turtles that make the Odisha coast their home at the time of their nesting.

India will lose both men's hockey and Cricket World cup 2023.So need to worry. Odisha Chief Minister efforts will be in vain....

India won the World Cup Hockey in 1975 held at Kualalampur under the captainship of Ajitpal Singh. This time World Cup is being held in India. Indian hockey is on ascending mode. In the last Olympics, Indian men got the Bronze and women missed the podium finish only by a whisker.

Although India is in a relatively tough group, I very strongly expect podium finish for the Men's hockey team.

I wish the Indian Hockey team all the very best and hope that they will bring home the World Cup! Though cricket has a greater fan following, I always feel that we, as Indians, have an emotional attachment to Hockey.

Immaterial of whether they win the cup or otherwise, let the Men in Blue play their game with zeal and enthusiasm and prove that the sport is very much a part of this nation till date. Wishing Team India good luck and all the best once again!

Bhushan, do not be so negative with your predictions. The reason for the attitude is well known as you had once divulged earlier. Let us be an Indian first, at least when our national teams are involved.

It is a matter of great pride that the International hockey tournament which is the world hockey cup is being organized in Bhubaneswar/Rourkela (Odisha). For hockey lovers, it will be a great opportunity to watch so many international teams vying for the world hockey cup.
There was a time when India was considered as a strong hockey team but later many countries emerged stronger and India lost that glory.
I wish Indian team to perform better taking advantage of the home turf and try for the top position.

India won the first match against Spain 2-0. Goals scored by Rohidas and Hardik Singh. Indian defence was brilliant throughout the match.
India's next match is against Britain. Best of luck for the Indian Team.

Apart from India, England, Australia and Argentina have also won their respective matches against Wales, France and South Africa. Tomorrow is a rest day for India. Will take up England on 15th January.

India has won the first match in this series and I feel it is a good start. There are so many good teams vying with each other and it is a long journey for India to reach the finals of this tournament.
I wish and hope that India will be doing well in the coming matches also and slowly make its way to the top. The people of every country will like that their country should take the cup but when there are so many teams performing at par then it is very difficult to predict or to say with confidence who will take the cup. The only thing is we have to do efforts for that and if the Indian team does these efforts in the best possible way that itself is a sign of victory for us. I wish all the best for team India.

It gave me immense pleasure to see the match between India and Spain. India won the match with 2 goals to zero. Our players played well and the Indian defence was of top class. I wish them all the best in their next match with Britain.

Happy we won the first qualifying game. I did think it would be tough, but, as the team's coach pointed out, India's defense was very good.

It seems some of you seem to think this is the first time that India is hosting the World Cup. This 15th edition is hosted by India for the fourth time. The previous time also, that is, in 2018, the tournament was hosted by Bhubaneswar. The other two occasions were in 1982 (Mumbai then known as Bombay was the venue), and in 2010 (in Delhi). As informed by Partha, we won the trophy only once, in 1975 when it was hosted in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Pakistan has won it the most times (4), then the Netherlands (3), and Germany and Australia have won it twice. Belgium is the defending champion and will co-host the next edition in 2026 along with the Netherlands.

An interesting bit of information about the beautiful trophy- it was designed by Basheer Moojid and put together with gold, silver, ivory, and teak by the members of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps of the Pakistan Army in 1971 and the Pakistan team won the inaugural competition.

It was a goalless draw against England yesterday, but what a thrilling game that was! There were many heart-stopping moments when both India and England missed chances to score, and the skirmishes in the Q2 session had me on the edge of my seat, as also those final seconds when England could have scored.

It seems both England and India have anyway qualified for the knockout stage with England topping due to a better goal difference, but would love to see a goal-scoring spree in our last qualification game against Wales on the 19th. Spain had earlier scored five goals against them.

Today, in Group D, India will play against Wales and England will play against Spain. Both India and England have 4 points each but England has a better goal difference. But today India is playing against a comparatively weaker team and England will play against a stronger team, Spain.

I hope India will play great hockey and defeat Wales with a huge margin. England may lose against Spain.

I hope India will reach the quarter-final directly.

The match starts on 7 p.m. IST.

    Best wishes, India!

I am definitely going to be cheering for our team and am looking forward to an exciting game with, hopefully, plenty of goals. It would be great to top the Group!

As of now, Australia and Argentina are in the first two positions in Pool A, Belgium and Germany in Pool B, and the Netherlands and New Zealand in Pool D.

India won the match 4-2 but remains second in the group. So, we have to play against New Zealand in the pre-quarter.

India is playing well but the issue now is scoring points and in that respect, much effort is still needed by team India.
Yesterday (19.01.23) India won over Wales by 4-2 and will be playing a crossover match against Newzealand on 22.01.23.
Right now in pool A, Australia and Argentina are leading. In pool B, Belgium and Germany are leading. In pool C, Netherlands is leading. In pool D, India and England are leading.
So far score wise Netherlands team is doing well.
Today (20.01.23) there are matches scheduled for pool A and pool B.
Then the crossover matches start from 22.01.23 leading to the quarter-finals.
Let us see how the scores move up now.

I watched all of India's group matches with Spain, England, and Wales. I feel that the Indian team has played so well to counter their opponent. However, I think the Indian team has to work hard on converting a penalty corner into a goal that was missing in the first match. In the first match with Spain Indian team should have scored at least 2 more goals the way they attacked the opposition team. The same has happened with England and Wales. We should have at least have 1 goal against England and 2 more Goals with Wales. But we know no matter how much we talk from the outside, it is the players who know how to play their match better. So far we could not top the point table but overall played a very good and attacking game. We hope that if this form continues, we can easily beat the New Zealand team and go to the quarterfinal.
All the best to Team India.

  • #768917
Yesterday's game was really exciting! The silence from the Indian fans in the stadium was deafening when Wales got two successive goals and tied the score 2-2. It was really good that our team did not crumble and managed to score two more goals. Of course, we all expected more goals, and credit to the opponents for holding the fort.

An incredible feat was the Netherlands team scoring 14 goals against Chile in the Group's qualifier. It was the biggest victory margin in the history of the hockey world cup. Commendable!

It is good to note that India wins two matches and one draw. Now it has to play against New Zeeland for reaching the quarterfinal. The way in which our team is playing, I feel India will be definitely in the quarterfinal. All the best to team India.

It is really sad that the team lost in yesterday's crossover game. Despite leading, we were unable to defend the lead. The attempts in the penalty shootout were also really poor and you could make out from the facial expressions and body language before the shootout began that the players were nervous and did not seem confident. They need to be mentally tough and not buckle under pressure.

What is sad is that spectators started leaving the stadium before the shootout was completed, anticipating the defeat. Surely they can stay back and applaud the team at least for playing their heart out. Nobody steps into a playing arena to lose. Everyone tries their best.

Now let's cheer the Men in Blue for their classification game against Japan on Republic Day in Rourkela, at 2 p.m.

    Bhushan,

By all means be critical of the manner in which a game is played, strategies, and decisions that are taken. However, to taunt and mock our national teams across all sports is just not acceptable. As I said in my previous response, nobody competes to lose. Everyone goes through a bad phase in their career, whether it is in a sport or any other field. So it is fine not to be a fan or cheer, but at least cut the humiliating remarks. Let us take pride in the efforts made, not merely in the end result only.

It is unfortunate that the Indian team lost to New Zealand even playing so well till the 3rd quarter. Credit must go to the New Zealand team who played such an attacking game in the last quarter of the match and drew the score. After the last quarter, this was the first time in this tournament that we could see that the Indian team felt the pressure. This was felt during the penalty shootout. After the first penalty shoot-out was drawn, the Indian team lost the rhythm and lost the game. However, we must say that except for this match, the Indian team really played a very good game throughout. Yes, if they have to win the big tournament, they must work on converting the goal from the penalty corner.

  • #769004
It is very unfortunate that India lost to New Zealand. They played well but in the end, the players became nervous I think. Anyhow, we should congratulate them for the performance they have put in. As mentioned by Vandana, nobody will play to lose. But always winning is also difficult. On a given day, their performance may not be up to the mark. The team should make their own analysis and see where they have lost and try to convert their weaknesses into their strong point. I wish team India all the success in the coming tournaments.

It is always a habit for the patriotic Indians to find excuse after loosing the World cup. Remember the game is played on their own backyard and still finding excuse means we can understand.. one more thing same dose will be repeated in World cup cricket remember this...

Winning and losing are part of the game. When there are so many teams playing against each other then how we can assume that only a particular country will become number one. We must accept the defeat in a sporting way and should not be discouraged by that.
Indian team was playing well but when the opponents are playing better then sometimes we have to succumb to the pressure.
Indian team has to learn the lessons and prepare better for the next tournament.
There is no point in getting demotivated or discouraged by these things. In fact, even a participation in tournament itself is a great achievement and then getting a position in that is a greater one. When there is stiff competition then only the best will reach the top. We must accept that reality.

It is very sad that India lost a crucial match to New Zealand, even though leading 3-1 at one stage. That the Kiwis will make a comeback, drew the game at 3-3 and then win the match through a shootout was beyond one's imagination. Now that we are no more in contention for a quarterfinal slot, the best we can do now is go all-out against 2018 Asian Games Gold medalist Japan. It is a very crucial match in the sense that a loss for India can get our team classified to its worst-ever positioning. It was in the 1986 world cup that India got placed 12 in its worst-ever finish. Those days there were only 12 teams competing. But with 16 teams competing in this edition, a defeat against Japan will take us to the 13-16th classification. Anyway, hopeful of our team's victory tomorrow.

As was expected and hoped, India won its classification match against Japan. And what a victory it was! 8-0. Incredible. The entire Indian team played like true champions today. No wonder they deserved this victory. Sure and certain, Japan won't be too pleased with the results. Never did they expect India to roar like a tiger and beat them so convincingly. Interestingly, all the goals were scored in the 2nd half. Next, India will play South Africa. In this regard, the rules for hockey are quite different compared to football, where there are no such classification matches and the rankings are done till the 4th place only.

I am quite dismayed - I forgot the game against Japan was on the 26th!! I am really happy for the team that not only they won, but did so with such a superb margin. Surely it will have boosted their confidence. Now I must remember to watch the game against South Africa at 7 p.m. for the 9th spot.

In the other matches, a nail-biting encounter between Germany and Australia had the former triumphing 4-2. They will now meet the Red Socks who are the defending champions and who defeated the Netherlands in the other semifinal 3-2 via a shootout. The final is on the 29th (Sunday).

Another scintillating win for the Indian team. This time our team won against South Africa by a 5-2 margin, a decent enough scoreline. Hope Vandana ma'am you saw the match. Interestingly, India finished joint ninth along with Argentina. Overall, the Indian team played very well in almost all its matches during the tournament. The crossover match against New Zealand cost the team heavily, robbing them of the chance to lift the world cup after a gap of 47 years. As for the finals tomorrow, both Germany and Belgium are equally placed and anyone can lift the trophy. For the next world cup, we will have to wait till 2027, which will be co-hosted by the African trio - South Africa, Zimbabve and Namibia.
    Patience and perseverance pays

  • #769104
Yes, Dhruv, I did see the entire match and am very happy that we won. It was disappointing at one point, though, to see their complacency. Just after we scored the fourth goal, the South Africans got possession of the ball and the defence seemed to have been caught napping, seemingly not really bothering to rush to support the goalkeeper to stop that first goal of the opponent. It was an easy goal for them. This kind of complacency and defensive lapses has in so many other tournaments been a bane for us in the last quarter, as pointed out by the coach, too. I hope they get their skills back in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics, to be hosted by Paris. Let's not forget that India is the most successful team in this sport at the Olympic Games with an impressive 8 gold medals. It is hoped that the women's team, too, achieve a podium finish!
